Re: KR> CHT probes

2019-09-04 Thread Robert Dunleavy via KRnet
Be very careful using a ring terminal under the spark plug. In my experience
in my volkspane it was very difficult to prevent them from leaking, which lets
the cylinder suck in air and run lean, ie hot. In conversations with Steve
Bennett, this was why he had moved the probe to a cylinder stud. I like the way
that the aero vee mounts the probe but never tried it myself, i moved mine to a
cylinder stud as Steve recommended and never had any more issuesrobert

terminals bend to fit in the hole, then separated the wire from the
cylinder head fins.  I also put some clear shrink tubing on the end
where they connect to the electronics, to keep the insulation from
fraying and making a mess later.

I agree with Donald, buy the spring loaded pushrod tubes that can be installed
after you put the heads on. If you use the stock pushrod tubes it is to easy to

to buy a new head. I used the spring loaded pushrod tubes  after that and never

KR> glassing procedure for wings

2016-12-31 Thread Robert Dunleavy via KRnet
There was a brief discussion a few weeks ago, but I want to make certain I have
this correct so please bear with me.
The KR2s manual I have is dated Jan, 1990 and was acquired last year from
NVaero.
Stub wing procedure is as follows ( and so I don't have to restate it each time
glass is cut and laid on a 45 degree bias).
para 10.11 first layup from front of forward spar to rear of wing (top side).
para 10.12 second layup at least two inches onto first layup (over front spar)
then around leading edge approx 3 inches past cordline.
para 10.16 (bottom of wing)  same as 10.11 and 10.12.

outboard wing sections are basically the same except para 10.32 calls for nose
layup to overlap spar caps top and bottom.
In summary it takes four layups: 1. leading edge of front spar to rear of wing
(top). one layer of glass. 2. front spar (with appropriate overlap) around nose
rib to form leading edge layer one. two layers of glass.3. same as step one on
bottom of wing. one layer of glass.4. same as step two forming leading edge
layer two, using two more layers of glass. four layers total.
sorry this got so long but it's a lot easier to make certain I get this
correct rather than having to redo it...thanks...robert

Are the brake cylinders fed fluid by a remote reservoir that's mounted
higher than the cylinders, or are the reservoirs built into the
cylinders? If there's no reservoir mounted higher and filled with fluid,
air bubbles in the cylinders are a real possibility.

My experience has been that bleeding the brakes is best done with a
simple mechanical oil pump, think oil squirting gun with a plastic tube
on the end, or even a pressurized garden sprayer, filling from the brake
bleeder and up through the rest of the system. This way, air bubbles
are carried up (their natural direction), and if there's a leak
somewhere it becomes apparent. If pulling a vacuum from the top of the
system, if you have a leak it will suck in air bubbles, and it will not
be obvious if it's a small leak.

Exactly the same as I recommend.? I find that a small pump oil squirt can is
more than enough to completely fill one side including the reservoir.

In an effort to learn something about the Suzuki GSXR 750 brake cylinders, I
did a google search and found a large recall of those master cylinders due to
an incorrectly placed port between the master cylinder and built in reservoir
causing the master cylinder to trap air.? I don't suppose you happened to get a
screaming good deal in a set of recalled master cylinders

KR> customer service at nvaero

It seems to be human nature to only report the bad so I thought I would try to

have been studying the plans in detail. I realized last week I was missing a

my phone rang. It was Steve at NVaero, I told him what was missing, he said he
would mail it to me in a week or so and we had a very nice talk about kr's in

KR> Cylinder Heads Again

2016-07-21 Thread Robert Dunleavy
Roger, I'm running a great plains 1835 on a vp-1. just wanted to respond to
your comment about valves leaking. In my experience with vw's I have found it's
next to impossible to keep the exhaust valves from leaking. I've had leaks on
new heads that have never been run. If you look at the guidance that's coming
out for A&P's lately a small leak is nothing to get to excited about. I have
400 hrs on my engine and it's still running strong. I do use the synthetic oil
as i also have seen reports that this helps lower cht. I have seen reports that
you should not use synthetic oil if you are using leaded gas but Haven't seen
anything on this in a few years so not sure if its still accurate. ...robert

it was at 400F as I turned crosswind, and I wasn't even at pattern
altitude yet!<

I spent some time looking through my engine log book for my first KR and the
CHTs were always in the 400 to 425 degree range on climb out and then around
375-400 in cruise. The last set of heads on that engine were CBP 044s. I
purchased then 1990, and had 150 hours on them when I crashed in 2009. When
I tore them down the exhaust valves had a lot of wear in the seating area
and all the valve spring retainer groves were really worn, along with the
valve guides. I had done many different things to get them to run cooler
including installing adjustable cowl flaps. I gained the most by smoothing
out the cowling exits and changing to full synthetic oil. I remember reading
some people reporting a? higher CHT using synthetic, but I did get a
consistent 25 degree drop in CHT. Of course, the oil temp went up from 170
to 190 in cruise. Not enough to worry me.

I have rebuilt the old 044 heads with new valve guides and new 214NSS
stainless valves from CBP and recut the valve seats with a Neway cutter. I
currently have about 75 hours on them. I Flew on a 100F degree day over the
weekend and here are the temps I got.

Climb:? 330F, taken under a cylinder head stud and 410F under a spark plug.
(I think I got hotter than that).
Cruise at 6500 ft. 3200 RPM, 145 MPHI:? 300F under the stud, and 350F under
the spark plug.

The engine is a 2180 with the compression ratio set at 7.2:1

I always pull the prop through four blades to make sure the valves have not
developed a leak. I have 75 hours on the heads and the engine is still
running strong and smooth, but now after shut down and pulling the prop
through I have a slight hiss coming from one cylinder out the exhaust pipe.
If I let the engine cool for 10 minutes or more the leak goes away. Maybe a
sticky valve guide?

It will be interesting to see how your DPD heads hold up.
