KR> Peel Ply
One thing I tried & has been successful, use the peelply in places where you are going to have an additional layer of glass, don't wait till the resin has gone hard before you remove the peel ply. In the places where you are not going to have any more glass, squeegee off the excess resin then sprinkle (or you can put as much as you like) the area with microballs then when the resin has gone off just brush the microballs. This helps suck up any excess resin & helps fill any weave in the glass. 75% done 90% to go. >From the town that has just gone through our 2nd earthquake in 6mths. KR> Welding and welder selection
I have been reading about various people's idea's of the different welding styles & equiptment. My suggestion is before you even start go to your local training estabilshment, & learn about all the various bits pieces & have a go . By the time you have purchased your equiptment etc etc the cost will be a lot more than just buying a welder . Welding hoods flux & rods, gas etc etc all the different rods for what ever you are welding etc etc. Then don't forget to be able to weld properly it is a process you have to be at all the time. When your are flying is not the time to wonder if your welding will hold together. It may be better to pay a few extra dollars & have it done profesionally & you will have peice of mind. Just my penny worth . Fly safe. Robin NZ.
KR> Outboard fuel tanks
Charles, Your comment about the outer wing being the least stressed point on the wing, the reason that is because there is no weight there & the aerofoil is not holding up much of the a/c. If you put 30 lbs of fuel out there the stress could change from the least stressed to the most stressed. If you did a heavy landing with 30lbs of fuel at the win tip it may turn into a disaster. Be careful. Robin. - Original Message - From: "Charles Smith"To: Sent: Tuesday, October 26, 2010 8:42 AM Subject: KR> Outboard fuel tanks Watching this discussion of fuel tanks closely. I have built a Dragonfly (hasn't flown yet) and found the construction technique to be fast and easy (you have to be fast when applying epoxy). However, I want to start over with a conventional design that fits the requirements of E-LSA. I would like to use the same construction techniques used in the D-fly but do not know what the parameters or results of putting a hollow space inside of a foam core wing would be but think it might be doable as wing tip tanks, just hollow out the outermost 'x' inches of wing and use it as the tank, the least stress place in the wing. I am looking at the KR design as the basis for this plane and soaking up any ideas I can run across to help me out.
KR> WAF spacers
I agree with you the spacer & one single bolt is stronger than the two bolts. The only problem is to start with this when you fit the WAFs to the spars, if the WAFs are slightly out of alignment you have a hellve job to get the bolt in without damaging the bolt or the WAF's . As there has never been a problem with the original set up why go looking for trouble. I have this problem my KR was built in the early 80's & had the single bolt. When I removed the bolt I was a bit shocked at the condition of the bolt, the bolt needed to be incouraged to go in the hole, I think someone had used a hammer. The WAF's are slightly out of alignment I feel there was too much stress on the WAF & the spar to get the bolt through both WAF's. Both front & back spars are the same. I want to go back to the multi bolts system, I will feel better with good bolts & no stress raisers. As Mark says make sure the thread of the bolt is out of the sheer load on the WAF. Robin. NZ.

Not sure how I will get on with mine, we will see. 75% done 50% to go Robin . NZ. I think there is a change to the WAF system where a tube needs to be fitted between the fittings and a single bolt is passed through. KR> Glassing wings
I am in the process of sanding my wings & laying up the glass. I read the manual to be sure of the process. 10.16 in the manual. Apply one BID layup aft of the main spar, with good contact to both bare wood spars. The area forward of the main spar will require two BID layups. Overlap the aft area layup at least 2" and extend the layup around the leading edge approximately 3" above chord line. You will have approximately 6" of leading edge three on each side of chord line, covered with 4 layers. My interpretation of this is to layup from the front of the front spar to the trailing edge of the wing with one layer of BID then layup from 2" rear of the front spar to around the leading edge with 2 layers of BID. This would give 3 layers over the front spar. If this is correct what is the reasoning behind this or what did others do. Many thanks for your reply Robin, NZ

I have no doubts that I have the ability and skills to complete either aircraft. Also, I should mention that I do not yet have a pilot certificate. since this will be a recreational aircraft and I don't foresee the need to fly at night or IFR, I was planning on getting a Sport Pilot certificate. KR> Aileron Travel.
Hi Guys, I'm tyring to sort out aileron travel. In the construction manual there is a dwg of the aileron bell crank. Also in the manual it gives a list of control system travel. The travel of the aileron is supposed to be + 20 -10 but there seems to be a conflict between the limits & what you can achieve. Also in an early newsletter # 22 it gives a limit of 1 1/2" up & 3/4" down measured at the inboard end of the aileron. This measurement gives you approx 1/2 of what the manual states. This is approx what the bell crank will give you, not the limits given in the manual. What have others found & how have they achieved it. Many thanks Robin.

Netheads, Thanks for all the replies. Someone suggested PVC tubes, someone else said be careful, with the modern day fuel they may attack the PVC. Plus not much difference in the weight of the thin wall Ali tube & the PVC I will go with the Ali tube. The tube comes in 5mt (12ft) lengths. I was concerned about the possibility of fuel sloshing back & forth. Apparently no problem. Weight, Phil M his wings came in at 50 lbs including tank. I think it was Mark J his wings came in at 56lbs with US 12 gal tank landing light etc. In an early KR newsletter someone's wings came in at 28lbs. So I think 50 lbs bare is a bit heavy I thnk I can do better than that. I have to redo the ailerons as there is a 1/4" concave in the in the aileron & the rear section of the wing. The ailerons are permanently sprung in the down position & you cant move them up beyond about 1/2" at the trailing edge, not sure how anyone managed to build them like that. The spar looks straight. KR> Rebuilding Wings.
Netheads. I have acquired a KR2, & I would like to rebuild the outer wings. The wings are heavy (approx 50 lbs), the aileron hinges are about 1/4" concave, & I would like to put tanks in the wings. Unfortunately I will stick with the RAF 48 airfoil I don't want to do the inner wings & reposition the rear spar. My method fasten the WAF's to a block of wood, Ali channel or what ever then cut the tip off & stick a block of wood to the outer end of the wing (not sure how, screw, glue or what ever). Then stick a piece of tube in the blocks of wood & use them like a rotisserie. The block of wood at the inner end would be to keep the WAF's & spars in the same relative position. Then take the lower skin & nose off & rebuild, probably use Mark L's method. Then turn over remove the top skin. Fit tanks probably 5" irrigation tube X 2 ( length depends on how much fuel I want). One thing I was think about with fitting irrigation tube. Depending on the length what is the expansion/contraction going to be compared with the wood/fibreglass structure. I thought of gluing the outer end (where the filler would be) in a cradle or what ever & allow the rest of the tube to expand/contract Then do top skin etc. My questions are Has anyone done anything like this before. Any thoughts, suggestions etc. Thanks Much appreciated. Robin. New Zealand r.macdon...@clear.net.nz

It is a light weight high power 4 stroke engine, 2 cylinder 70 hp at 75 lbs. Develpoed for a helicopter, & could be used in light aircraft. Much appreciated. KR> Wing Incidence & Washout
Netheads, I have been following the discussion on the wing incidence & washout & found it very interesting. One thing, everyone has used the AS 5046 at the root & the AS 5045 at the tip. There has been no mention of the AS 5048, Why not & what characteristics would the AS 5048 give? & what is the shape of the tip rib when using the AS5048 at the Root. KR> New Forum
Hi guys, I am still on dial-up (Broardband has been coming & going for the last few months not sure what is going on) I find the new Forum a bit unwieldy & slow sorry it is not for me. As somone suggested can the emails be sent as they are now as well as the forum, would be much appreciated. And now with the Spyware etc. being updated every few days a few minutes with dial-up can turn into 15 minutes no problem. Robin.
KR> Paypal
Netheads, Someone suggested to pay for an article by Paypal. I agree it is an excellant process but don't forget how do you pay Paypal. You have to pay Paypal through a credit card, there is a charge because the transaction is in another country, a charge because it is an other currency a charge because there is a "T" in the day etc The banks screw you for everything they can. Sometimes bank charges can be horrendous to say the least. Robin.
KR> DRO
Netheads, I realise this is not KR2 related, but hope someone out there can help me. I have a lathe with an ACU-RITE DRO on it & one of the heads has died. I have sent 2 emails to ACU-RITE in USA within the last week but so far had no reply. Is there anyone out there who has had experience with ACU-RITE DRO's any suggestion or help would be much appreciated. Off net of course. Robin New Zealand r.macdon...@clear.net.nz
KR> KR2 Upside down
Netheads, I opened this mornings paper, there is a photo of a KR2 upside down at a local airport. He landed beside the tarmac runway ( not sure why) & then flipped over. The ground was very soft & soggy. Looks like a tail dragger with retracts. Not badly hurt, canopy & prop smashed . Moral of the story check strength of roll bar . Will let you know when I find out more. Robin New Zealand. r.macdon...@clear.net.nz
KR> Dan Diehl
Netheads, I have ben trying to get hold of Dan Diehl as well, I have just had an email back from him. The address was d...@diehlaero.com Good Luck Robin.
KR> Glassing
Netheads, I have been given some early KR Newsletters. In one Newsletter Aug 97 there is an article about glassing etc. This guy's suggestion was before glassing prime the foam. this stops the epoxy soaking into the foam. Make a primer of powered waterproof glue mixed with water, the type that can be purchased at the hardware store. Mix the glue according to instructions, then begin to thin with water while mixing in micro ballons. Experiment with some scrap foam & adjust the mixture until the filler sands almost as easily as the foam. This seals the foam & stops the foam absorbing any expoxy resin, makes it lighter & you use less resin Has anyone else tried this & what was the results. I am interested in your comments. Robin. r.macdon...@clear.net.nz
KR> Splicing Longerons
Net Heads, Someone was going to splice the longerons to extend the fuselage. The recommended splice is 15 : 1 . good luck. Robin r.macdon...@clear.net.nz
KR> Turbo's
Netheads, Something you have to take into consideration when fitting a turbo to a non turbo engine is the compression ratio. A non turbo engine will be in the range about 10 : 1 & a turbo engine will have something like 8 : 1 Robin. r.macdon...@clear.net.nz
KR> Resin Shelf life
Netheads, There was an inquiry a few weeks ago about the Storage/Shelf life of Resins. I have just received the Product Guide for the West System Store at room temperature. Keep containers closed to prevent contamination. With proper storage, resin & hardener should remain usable for many years. Over time 105 resin will thicken slightly & therefore require extra care when mixing. hardeners may darken with age, but physical properties are not affected by colour. Mini Pumps may be left in containers during storage. After a long storage, it is a good idea to verify the metering accuracy of the pumps & mix a small test batch to assure proper curing. Repeated Freeze/thaw cycles during storage may cause the crystallization of 105 Resin. Warm resin to 125 degrees F & stir to dissolve crystals. Don't forget this only applies to the West System, but may be a guide for other types. I hope this gives some guide to those who were not sure where to store the resin, or how long it will last . But as always irrespective of age etc do a test piece your life depends on it & you will sleep better at night knowing you have done all you could. Robin r.macdon...@clear.net.nz
KR> Mike Mims email address
Netheads, Can anyone help me please. I am trying to get hold of Mike Mims, tried an email addres, but it came back. Something missing. Thanks Robin r.macdon...@clear.net.nz
KR> Undercarriage Loadings.
Net Heads Thanks guys for all your answers, it makes one think a bit more. Not only the undercarriange has to withstand the high loading but everything has to. Wings engine, things you hang on the instrument panel, the seat, as I say everything. The manual gives the flight loading + 4.4 g -1.7 g but Mark's 5.5 (& still in one piece) is getting up there a bit. Once again thanks to everyone. Robin. r.macdon...@clear.net.nz

KR> Higher H.P. from your engine
Hang on hang on Guys, Ron has a good point if used correctly Nitrous Oxide is not a problem. Don't forget a lot of you are busy pushing the envelope for the KR2 . The KR2 of 2006 is a wee bit different to the KR2 1990. Robin. r.macdon...@clear.net.nz
KR> Height of Canopy.
Netheads, There was a question asked a few weeks ago but I have not seen a reply. What is the max height of the top of the canopy or top of turtle deck without interfering with the airflow over the tail feathers What has been used as the datum, (botom of the fuselage) or (top of rear spar). Or what height has anyone gone to. Thanks Robin r.macdon...@clear.net.nz
KR> Going Topless
Mark, You suggest you may go topless. I would be very interested, (but unfortunately it is a bit far to come & see) how do you attach your turtle deck & front deck to the fuselage & how do you finish or hide the join. Are there any others who have done the same & how do you finish off the join line. I have had a look at various sites but can't find any photo's or much information Thanks. KR> Flaps/tubes tec.
Netheads, I am interested in all the information about flaps/connection to tubes etc. Has anyone any idea what the touque is on the tube when the flaps are lowered. This would give anyone an idea of what size tube to use, what size of flanges connections etc & what power is needed in the actuator. Also once the system was finished you could test load to a required torque. Regards Robin r.macdon...@clear.net.nz
KR> Props
Netheads, For what it is worth, I have come across a site about props, one comment there was that the ideal prop speed is, a tip speed of 680 Ft/sec. This may help in the selection of the correct prop. Robin New Zealand r.macdon...@clear.net.nz
KR> Props
Netheads, I guessed it would open a can of worms. The site I looked at gave an ideal speed of 680 ft/sec, & it looks as though you should never exceed 900 ft/sec. So this should give anyone a rough guide of what the RPM should be for a given diameter. If the RPM is out you should change the pitch. Regards Robin New Zealand r.macdon...@clear.net.nz
KR> Polyester V Epoxy
Hi guys, I have been reading the comments about polyester resin. Just a thought, what about surfboards they have been around for 40 years. They are made from a block of foam then cut in half & a thin wood stringer is glued in the middle. Then the shaper shapes the board, then it is glassed with 1 or 2 layers of glass using polyester resin . Have you seen any of the surf contests, especially in Hawaii with the big waves & I mean big. These guys get out there & then try & ride the wave. The point I am making, they have been around for a long time, the stress that get from surfing, they sit on top of vehicles in all weathers, from hot sun to snow. The only time the glass lets go from the foam plug is when they get dinged, dropped on rocks etc I have seen a few boards break in half, you ask the guy what happened, he was on a wave about 20 ft high then got flung off & the bard hit the bottom. I think this would be a good example to say that polyester resin hangs on. I would think the stress the surfboad gets would be similar to an aircraft. Anyone else have any comments. Robin New Zealand.

Fw: KR> another quick flying story
Mark & Netheads, If you like to pay my airfare, & accomdation I will balance your engine for free. I'll bring my gear & spend the next 6 mths going from place to place checking vibration & balancing engines/props. for anyone & everyone That is what I have been doing for the last 25 years & now trying to retire out of it & build a KR2. Well I can only ask. Great to hear all the stories, suggetions etc. Keep up the good work. Robin New Zealand.
