hi all,
I once bought a KR1 fuselage and figured out that it was not made well, plus
life got in the way and I sold the hardware and scrapped the wood.

now that I'm again looking for an unfinsihed project, I'd like t ask you
owners and builders, what are some things I should examine to at least try
and determine build quality?
all advice will be GREATLY appreciated!
(in fact, should I consider a flying example, the same advice will also help
with that)

Operating Limitations. (The document given to you?with the airworthiness

So the memory trick is:

A - Airworthiness Certificate (Must be visible)

R - Registration Certificate

O - Operating Limitations?

W - Weight and Balance information?

2013-06-28 Thread Tim Hoversten
Greetings from OSH!

I purchased a set of KR-1 plans from Jeanette Rand in Feb of 2009, and am
getting ready to start building. I was reviewing the plans booklet and
revisions, and noticed there are some drawings that are missing.?

On page 22, step 8.1.1 refers to drawing #9 concerning rudder pedals and pg 25,
step 8.1.5 refers to rudder cables and nicopress fittings, also on drawing #9.

On page 49, steps 14.2 and 14.9 refer to back up plates in the firewall area
and to drawing #13

Also on page 49, step 14.9 refers to drawing #14, regarding engine mounts and
mounting hardware.

Is there any way to get drawings 9, 13 and 14 for the KR-1?

What are your opinions on using an O-290-D Lycoming for the KR2-S?
(approximately 230-260 lbs dry weight and 125hp at 2600 and 130hp at 2800).
The weight is about the same as the Corvair, but the horsepower is a bit

2011-12-31 Thread Tim
Thought I'd pass this along, from Schu.thoughts on Auto Conversions>>>

CldLk-Tim

I looked at the subaru pretty hard and did a lot of research that I'll try
and summarize for you:

The biggest problem with auto conversions isn't the auto engine itself, it's
everything else. I would bolt the subaru engine in my airplane in a second
because I think it's a far better engine than a lycoming because of the very
short stroke (piston speeds aren't much higher even at 5k rpm), a main
bearing per rod, very good tolerances, and liquid cooling to make winter
flying as simple as plugging in a freeze plug heater, and heat in the
cockpit. But it's not just the engine, it's the alternative fuel system,
the PSRU, the ignition system, and cooling system. Let me explain:

The PSRU is a really big deal. Engines don't turn over smoothly, they
accelerate and decelerate as each piston is doing it's work. This combined
with the large 2-blade tuning fork on the front of the engine can cause
harmonic issues that can destroy the PSRU or the engine in minutes if the
engine is running at the resonance frequency of the prop. It's kinda like
tapping a tuning fork at it's resonance frequency, the harmonics can cause
the forces on the gears and crank to go to theoretical infinite. In order
to get around this cars have large harmonic balancers or the ultimate
harmonic balancer: the drive-train and tires. The engine won't have as much
torsional vibration if the harmonic balancer/flywheel/drive-train keep it at
a steady speed, but these things don't exist on an airplane, in face most
auto conversion vendors get rid of the flywheel or make it as light as
possible to offset the weight.

Other problems are the fuel system. You must use electric pumps which can
fail, so you need two of those, then you need to have a way to detect
alternator failure since you will be running off of the battery if it fails.
Some people add a second battery or a second alternator, but that is even
more weight. All of that said, most of the recent accidents have come from
high pressure fuel lines failing in flight. A fuel line problem caused Bud
Warren's wheeler to go down, then another fuel line problem in a customers
airplane caused another crash, but he didn't survive the second one. A
fellow at vansairforce had an RV10 that had a chevy v8 from Versa that had a
fuel line leak and an explosion in the cockpit after landing. He and his
passenger got out and are now fine, but his airplane burned to the ground.

All these things said, there are people flying auto conversions and they do
just fine. Dan Shilling has a subaru 3.3L SVX engine in his with an
autoflite PSRU. If I was to build a auto conversion this is what I would be
building for a few reasons: 1. The autoflite PSRU has a rubber coupler to
deal with the harmonic issues and it's a commercial unit designed for high
vibration PTO applications. 2. Dan has solved the cooling issues, so just
copy his design. 3. The 3.0L engine is more complex than what I would want
in an airplane and the 4 cyl engines aren't powerful enough, especially
given the weight. I think the 3.3L engine is the right engine for this
application. 4. We know that his airplane weighs the same as many io-540
so you aren't going to have CG problems. 5. We know it fits under the
cowling and the engine mount has been worked out.

This engine combo isn't without some drawbacks. The prop turns the opposite
direction so you would need to mount the vertical stab on the opposite side
of center to combat p-factor, which would make it hard to go back to a
lycoming if you ever wanted to. Another option is to mount the stab in the
center and use a trim tab like a Cessna.

I wouldn't buy an eggenfellerner simply because I wouldn't trust my life to
his PSRU, and I don't think his engine options will work that well. I
wouldn't run a turbo because the late model engines are already more complex
than I would want.

In the end I don't think the auto conversions are a good option unless you
like that kind of fabrication and enjoy the challenge. If your one of those
types then my hat is off to you!!! If not, I think that a o-360 is the best
engine, unless you must go fast or have floats, then the bigger the better.

To all Canadian KR people and other lurkers like me, whenever you order
books from EAA be sure to have them shipped by USpost as they (EAA) usually
use Purlator or some other type and you will be faced with an additional
'brokerage fee'. I ordered their Christmas special of the 3 book Bingelis
Special several years ago and was faced with an additional $38 brokerage
fee - not nice!. I phoned EAA about it and got no satisfaction and wonder if
their shipping rules still apply. ( I/we now have a US drop box that is only
60 miles away for USA purchases - eliminating high delivery charges etc)

You're not the first guy to wonder these things, and you won't be the last.
A lot of these planes have been built and flown, despite the poor state of

vertical stabilizer's aft spar to finish forming the boat. This is the
width of the fuselage back at the place where the rudder fastens (it's a
tapered piece that's something like 2" wide on average). Taper the spar
first, and leave the plywood overlapping a bit to provide a gap seal for the
rudder. So use the farthest aft measurement that's given for a cross member
as your last known point, and then the tailpiece, and the other cross pieces
are just cut to fit. I'd give better directions, but I'm at work and the
plans are at home.

As for tri-gear, that fits under the same heading as a lot of things...you
don't get the one-sheet plans for it unless you bought the optional parts
themselves from Rand Robinson. Diehl sold most of the nose gear, and his
instructions are online at
http://www.diehlaero.com/NOSE%20GEAR%20INSTRUCTIONS.pdf . I think Steve
?Glover at NVAero is now selling that gear. I'll let him clarify.

There's a lot of guesswork building a KR from those plans, so better get
used to it now...

Thanks for the reply, but herein lies the problem. I have squeezed out
enough info for the sides to do the build of them. I have the dimensions for
the crosspieces at the stations I mentioned; however, there are none for the
tail width of the fuselage sides. Do I just guesstimate how wide the
fuselage is supposed to be at the tail section, or am I missing that
critical measurement. Do I understand that the plans have no procedure for
tri-gear, and that the details for those will be included in the install
instructions of the gear themselves?

Thanks guys, appreciate all the help.

KR> Plans lacking details

2011-08-14 Thread Tim Caughron
Hi guys, sitting down tonight to plan the layout of my fuselage. Now, I love
logic puzzles, and am pretty good at them, but this is ridiculous. I'm
hoping someone can take a minute and check to see that I have a full
inventory of plans here. I purchased plans KR-2 #9809/KR-2S #1196 in January
2005 from RR. Maybe I'm crazy, or just need to make up some dimensions, but
I cannot figure out some of these.

For instance, looking at the Horizontal Framing Layout on Dwg A for the 2S,
it only gives me the width locations of Stn's A, D, and G. It shows the max
width between F & G and straight from Stn I. Nowhere does it give me the
width of Stn O, or any other location that would allow me to figure the
correct dimensions. I looked through every page in my manual, and the best
it does is tell me to refer to the plans for all the correct dimension of
the layout???

Can anyone tell me if there is a dimension sheet for all the called out
parts on the drawings? Seems there should be a reference to say Station A -
O are xx inches in length, or there should be some key dimensions to allow
one to figure those out. At the very least, the plans should tell me how
wide the aft end of the longerons should be dimensioned - come on!

Another cause for concern with my plan set is I plan to build a tri-gear
version. Nowhere on any drawing is tri-gear addressed, and the manual deals
only with tail-gear details - no mention of tri-gear period! I'm sure the
situation is worse the farther from simply laying out the fuselage frame I
will get. Am I missing something here?

Here is an inventory of the plans I received with this set, if someone
notices something missing, please let me know so I can try to contact
Jeanette and get them, thanks:

KR-2 Drawings

Dwg 1 - Fuselage Assy.

Dwg 2 - Inboard / Outboard Wing Template, Flap Hardware &
Assembly

Firewall Template - Full Scale

KR-2S Drawings

Dwg A - Framing Layouts

Dwg B - Various Details

Firewall Template - Full Scale

W1 - Spar Details

W2 - Wing Details

W3 - Airfoils

Thanks to anyone that can help me. Maybe I shouldn't be so concerned with
every detail, but this seems like an awful lot of guessing.

KR> Planning my build

2011-08-11 Thread Tim Caughron
Hi all, I've been lurking here for a while trying to push myself over the
wanting stage to the doing stage. I've a set of 2S plans for several years,
and since coming home from Oshkosh last week, I am eager to get doing. Had
an opportunity to talk to and look at Joe Horton's plane - thanks Joe, good
job on the impromptu class. Was really hoping to have a chance to talk to
Mark L, but the weather delay and my having to babysit 3 kids didn't quite
work out.

I want to start laying out my fuselage. After reading most of Mark's site, I
have a couple questions. Should I plan to add 1 more 14" bay aft of the
spars to increase stability? If so, it seems I should add forward of the
spars to cancel out the extended arm - if so any recommendations? Lastly
today, I'd like to increase the width by 3-4 inches. Should I add that to
all the width dimensions, or just in the area of the cockpit? I plan to
slide the widest part of the fuselage back to the shoulder area as Mark
suggested as well.

Any info, suggestions or ideas welcome. I would love to hear from anyone
having incorporated any of these changes. Am starting to layout on CAD now -
boy are those plans lacking some needed info!

Enjoyed following this forum, look forward to participating, building and
flying. Thanks all.

the staightest grain and zero knots. On a 2nd KR I also went to the local
lumber yard and spent the afternoon going thru the stacks of construction
grade spruce 2x8's etc pulling out the odd knot free and straight grain
board. When the grain was not as straight as I like, I re-sawed the boards
and laminated them to their best advantage. I once found a stash of redwood
as staight and close grained as I ever saw, and built a set of wings for

KR> Vinyl Ester

2010-10-11 Thread Tim
Yeah, I was in the Canard group for years CSA etc...I had a Leze project

Here's an old post by Canard Epoxy Guru 'Gary Hunter', works for Shell Oil
in Epoxies>>>

All the suppliers claim their "structural resins" are suitable for fuel
containment. And, they are - IF - the builder knows how to go about it and
does everything correctly. I have always been adamant about "post curing"
epoxies, especially the fuel tank. You can't buy cheaper insurance.

Safe-T-Poxy I or now EZ-Poxy 87 is probably by far the best in this
category, with or without a post cure. Chemical resistance is one of the
prime attributes of epoxies beyond homebuilding airplanes. They are used
for building fiberglass chemical storage tanks and piping and for lining of
steel tanks to prevent corrosion. In that industry the curing agent "type"
governs the degree of chemical resistance. Aromatic amines are by far the
best known curing agent type for overall chemical resistance - particularly
in fuels, solvents and strong acids. EZ-Poxy 87 is the only aromatic amine
curing agent available to the homebuilt world.

Next in line are "aliphatic amines". The original RAES & RAEF were
"modified" aliphatic amines. However, according to my tests the RAES
without a post cure was absolutely no good for fuel and marginal with. But,
the RAEF without a post cure was marginal and did just fine with a post
cure. Thus, the original Vari-Eze plans mandated RAEF for the fuel tanks.

Next in line are "cycloaliphatic" amines. Aeropoxy, MGS, Proset, and
EZ-Poxy 83 & 84 are "blends of modified aliphatic and cycloaliphatic amine
adducts". Modified - because the straight stuff has bad cure behavior.
Some modifications work out better than others. A prime example is the
Aeropoxy's sensitivity to temperature and moisture. I call these "quirky
cure characteristics". However, even the "quirkiest" of these curing
agents will resist fuel - IF - they are properly applied and fully post
cured.

DO NOT simply brush the resin on the inside surface of the already cured
fuel tank and expect it to cure like a 2 or 4 ply lay-up. This is where the
screen plugging flakes of epoxy come from.

Your original layups for all the inside tank components should be "wet" so
to be certain there are no dry spots, pinholes or voids. This is no place
to be too concerned about weight. Even the BID tapes in the corners should
be nice and wet. Peel ply only were secondary bonds will be needed. For
those of you than like the smooth surface of peel plying - add an extra
final ply of a fine weave light weight fiberglass deck cloth. It will give
you a similar smooth surface without introducing or hiding voids. Warm
shop temperatures and low humidity will reduce the curing agents "quirk"
factor.

There are many ways to obtain a post cure on the tank. Before the tops are
put on, you can use heat lamps to cure the inside surfaces. You can
pre-post cure the inside surface of the top too. After the top is bonded
in place you can post cure these bonds by heating the exterior surface with
heat lamps. The heat will work its way to the bonds.

OR, after the top of the tank is bonded on, you can circulate warm air
through the tank for several hours. I did this with the outlet end of my
vacuum cleaner inserted in to the fuel cap opening. About 140F is
sufficient.

RULE OF THUMB - If you can hold your hand on the surface to the count of 10
- the temperature is 140F or below.

Hope this is helps.

Derek, lot's of KR projects out there, many not on the Net. Sometimes these
projects end up in the strangest places due to their low initial cost (plans
built). Get this In the 80's, I saw a fuselage being used as a boat at a
Fish Farm.

I didn't expect my add to end up on the list but OK. I am easiest to reach
by E-Mail. And would like to find one somewhere in the western US, unless
it is flying.

Thanks,

Not a radio guy, but have noticed that some use a second antenna, so

Oh, and a corollary to the transponder antenna thing is don't turn on a
transponder without an antenna attached, and definitely don't push the ident

it has no place to go, but a long ident blast is really asking for
trouble...

KR> Plan Routes website

2010-08-09 Thread Tim

 - Original Message -
 From: "Rodney Woodard" http://www.mustangflyer.com/

I found a cool website that lets you plan routes on a VFR sectional for
 free.

www.runwayfinder.com

I'm headed out for breakfast tomorrow morning with some friends. We're
headed to Steamboat Springs, CO (KSBS).

I did a little test hop this past Tuesday. I climbed to 11,500' and was
still seeing 500 fpm as I leveled off.

I'm attaching a snapshot of my planned route to KSBS tomorrow morning. I'll
plot in the Lat/Lon points in the GPS and then pick my way over and around
the highest points while using the GPS route as a general guideline. I
really love the terrain feature on my Garmin 496. I just watch the Red turn
to Yellow and then to black as I pick my way through the hills. I'm doing
this all VMC, of course, but it's still cool to have electronic
confirmation
that I'll clear something by more than XX number of feet. The XX is a
user-selected number of feet for what shows up as red and what shows up as
 yellow on the 496.

It won't be too applicable to tomorrow's flight, but the 496 also does a
great job of pointing out the various widow-maker antennas we have dotting
our horizon on the eastern plains of Colorado. I've even got it wired to
play through my headset so I get a little voice talking to me about
"obstacle ahead" and "sink rate" and "500 feet" on the approach. If it
called me a "Retard" in the flare I'd think I was at work in the Airbus!

I spent a little time out at the hangar this evening. I had a friend pick
up a Zulu headset for me at Oshkosh. I bought the panel-powered installed
version so now I have to wire it up. I ran out of energy at the hangar so I
bagged the project for this evening. Maybe tomorrow...

Loving the flying. http://www.mustangflyer.com/

Hi Daniel,

Yes, I see your point. I think as far as "stronger" is concerned I
should have rather said "better sealed". I am concerned about water and
oil getting into the wood. I often operate from unpaved runways
(sometimes just dirt roads), sometimes wet ones and little stones kicked
up can play havoc with a finish. It might be worthwhile to just glass
the bottom of the fuselage for protection.

I know you can get a superb finish without glassing! I would also expect
the glass to be slightly heavier than a well done non-glass finish.

Thanks, I will make sure I use Feather Fill or if I can find it a local
equivalent.

I need to decide soon as it is pretty much my next step, the rest of the
plane is just about finished other than the seats, engine and instrument
installation as well as painting.

Regards,
Rudi

Guys,

I am about to take on a KR 2 s project and go down the VW aircooled
conversion
route and would prefer the more powerful option of a redrive or a type 4
engine,
(As my knowledge of these units would allow me safer opperation).

I am in the UK and drawings and notes exist for the wing plates etc to take
the
AUW up to 1050LB, but I have heard of difficulties (within the UK) of having
these mods weight limits accepted.

I would therefore like to send out an appeal to gather data on the weight
capacity of this aircraft, preferably any tests done to destruction within a
measured Labratory enviroment on both the standard wing RAF profile and
later
"upgraded" version, to compare the slight spar dimentional changes, and foam
cored with wing skin preformed versions .

Personal flight time experience and observed G meter evidence ould also be
valuable as supporting evidence.

I am sure that ther will be many partialy finished /damaged airframes out
there that are destined to go as firewood, and would be better served to be
used
to test to destrction either in a suitably equiped University or aircraft
research facility(either UK,EU or USA).

I would be willing to act as Hub /organiser for shipping to UK,EU (would
hope to
contribute to a part loaded container..any offers gratefully recieved).

I have shipped from Pheonix AZ before but I am open to sugestions options,
(Vans
RV builders container share is one example I know of).

I could go down the simpler route and install a Jabiru engine but I think
the
technical approach could assist a lot of KR 2 owners who are limited to solo
flight currently, and encourage completion of part finished UK KRs.

I ill be influenced by response (or lack of) as I do not have the resource
to go
this alone, and also would not want to repeat data collection already
available.

My aim is to make data obtained to be made freely available subject to any
request for expences to be covered by any univesrities that contribute,or
profesional services engaged or in the case of data copywritten /owned by
third
parties supplied for this study, subtect to release from any liability for
use
of that data offered .

I have no previous ties or arrangements regarding this idea and welcome any
possitive/productive suggestions or contributions

Regards

Kevin

Forward sweep has been used on Amateur built aircraft before. The Cygnet has
a touch of forward sweep as does the Schleicher K-8 glider. A small amount
of forward sweep does not require sophisticated computer controls however
deviating from the designers plans, especially with a proven design such as
the KR-2 can be very, very dangerous. A seemingly insignificant amount of
change in the wing geometry could cause unforeseen stability problems or
cause the plane to become uncontrollable in certain situations. If you don't
like the design your building build a different design don't make untested
changes especially with control surfaces and wings.

To Bill:
Mooney's are not unstable, and their wings do not have forward sweep. They
are great aircraft. Their leading edge is straight (perpendicular to the CL
of the fuselage) and their trailing edge is swept forward which gives the
appearance of forward sweep, but it is the leading edge that matters.

Back around 1988, Mike Sacoutis bought a wood wing Mooney off a Grass
Airstrip. It had sat there 'outside' for years.

After some maintenance, he talked 'Serge' German war Test Pilot, to fly it
back to our Airport, approx 10 miles..Serge did, uneventfully.Within
a week a huge wind storm, lifted the Mooney up & thru it ontop of the
Airport's 8' chain link fence.

Both wings were snapped off, exposing inside the box spar, a friggin
Mushroom farm. In places you could poke yer finger through the web.Serge
was upset with Mike> "That's the last GD time I'm ferrying your 'Junk'

KR> forward sweep

2010-07-12 Thread Tim
To match the lift distribution over the wing with weight distribution over
the wing. Most aircraft have all their weight in the centre (eg. fuselage).
The ideal match is actually an eliptical shaped wing planform but tapering
is easier to build and is a good compromise.

If a plank flying wing aircraft had its weight evenly distributed over it's
entire span then a constant cord would be best.

Tapered wing planforms are most often employed to approximate the ideal
elliptical planform. Theoretically a perfectly elliptical planform enables
every part of the wing to reach the maximum CL at the same time, which will
result in a wing with the lowest posible drag for a given lift.

Since it is difficult to build a wing with a curved elliptical planform a
tapered shape is often used as an approximation.

I do not know if I will be in any physical shape to race or not. Much less
make Oshkosh this year. A week ago, I had the misfortune of tripping and
falling down a flight of stairs. I hyper-extended my left shoulder and may
have torn the rotor cuff or other components in there. The doctor wanted me
to wait two weeks for the swelling to go down before we do an MRI. I am
scheduled to visit him this Friday and will know more then. So, if surgery
is in my near future, this would kock out any flying activities for a while.
Bummer.

I think somebody said something about building a 9' horizontal stabilizer
the other day, and I don't remember any replies. You could certainly do
that, but I'd hope you'd make the spars tall enough to withstand the
increased load that would be applied to them. I don't know why you'd want
to do that though, since 7' long seems to work fine on my KR2S. One thing I
did differently than most folks though is retained the same elevator area,
so I effectively increased horizontal stab area while leaving elevator the
same as the KR2S plans call for. That probably helps with pitch
stability...

KR> APRS / ELT

2010-02-23 Thread Tim Caughron
Hi all, long-time follower, first-time poster.
While I haven't started my KR-2S project yet, I thank all of you for your
dedication to this ongoing resource. I have read many great ideas and hints
and will be doing frequent searches when the building starts.

I work as a Sheriff Deputy in California and am assigned as a pilot to our
Air Support Unit. Having been in the unit for 7 years now, it is safe to say
I have worked my fair share of downed aircraft and beacon alerts. The APRS
discussion has been great and many folks have made some great points.

>From my viewpoint, the 121.5 system was extremely unreliable. Easily, at
least half the searches we conducted for downed aircraft were without any
ELT activation - at least by the time we made it on scene. Generally, an
aircraft was reported overdue. Authorities were notified and a search begun.
This generally started with origination and destination airports. Then
expanded to known course. Sometimes, the search was delayed hours or even
days. Unfortunately, pilots have a habit of not filing flight plans anymore,
so more likely than not the notification comes from friends or family. Even
if we were lucky enough to pick up a signal, the 121.5 system required a
very complicated search of the "alert area" because of the omni-directional
signal and no equipment to zero in on it.

As for the 406 system - it looks promising and will be a huge help for
searchers because of the GPS reporting. I have had only one experience with
the system so far - that being a camper in the Sierras experiencing chest
pain and made notification via the "Spot" unit he had for the trip. We
received instant notification and coordinates that were right on the money.
Flew to the location and hoisted him out without searching or delay.

As for APRS, let me just say that I was so impressed with its capabilities
that I studied for and received my Technician license so I can operate one.
My plan is to make one or two portables to carry while flying at work. We
generally operate in remote terrain and without a flight plan or flight
following (just the nature of the business). If we had a mishap, it could
literally be forever before we were located if I was unable to activate my
portable PLB.

The interesting thing is that the APRS is a free version of commercial
flight tracking systems that are becoming very popular and quite expensive.
They offer everything APRS is capable of. The benefit is the live flight
tracking. Even if the unit fails in a crash, the last point of contact is a
much better place to start than pointing to a random place on the map. As a
rescuer, I hope that someday one of my searches involves the APRS system. It
would be of great benefit to pull-up an aircrafts flight before I begin a
search. I know it would greatly assist in the location and can be nothing
but beneficial.

While I don't condone anymore gov't regulation, I would hope that all airmen
see the benefit of this equipment and move to a volunteer adoption of
installing and using it. By my experience, it is likely to be your friends
and family that make the overdue report anyway, why not give them the tools
and ability to track you and narrow the search information for the
authorities. Think of it as a redundant system - when it comes to aircraft,
you can never have too much of that. Oh yeah - I guess I would recommend a
"Spot" also if you are of the outdoor adventurist type.

The 0-200 will certainly fit the mount but I doubt if you're lucky
enough to have the bolt hole spacing fit the firewall side and then
the distance from firewall to engine may not be correct for your
bird. You would also have to remove the nosewheel mount metal from
the mount and , without looking, I don't know if that will weaken the
mount or not. I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope of it working. Of
course, that's my guess without seeing the mount or taking any dimensions.

KR> EAA Special Edition: Sport Pilot Revisions Finally Here

2010-02-01 Thread Tim
Urgent Member Action Needed

FAA Revision to Sport Pilot Rule Mostly Favorable

The FAA's long-awaited revisions to the five year-old Sport
Pilot/Light-Sport Aircraft Rule were published Monday, February 1, in the
Federal Register. With the changes sport pilots will be allowed to fly higher
and safer in mountainous regions, find it easier to gain towered airport
experience in a powered parachute or weight-shift-control aircraft, and S-LSAs
can be used at Part 141 flight schools which will likely reduce training costs
for all student pilots. Additionally, a key change to the aircraft maintenance
rules will allow E-LSA owners whose aircraft were originally certified as an
S-LSA to perform their own maintenance.

EAA and NAFI jointly submitted comments to the FAA's 22 proposed changes
and after reviewing more than 150 public comments the FAA withdrew eight
proposals and agreed fully or in part with EAA/NAFI recommendations on 10
others.

"The revisions to the rule will affect everyone differently. For most
there will be very little change. But certain groups like E-LSA owners whose
aircraft used to be certificated under S-LSA provisions should be excited since
they will now be able to maintain and sign-off maintenance on their own
aircraft." said Earl Lawrence, EAA's vice-president of Industry and Regulatory
Affairs. "Obviously there were disagreements with the FAA's in other areas, and
EAA will continue to fight for changes in the future such as the rules on
ultralight aeronautical experience," Lawrence added.

EAA and NAFI's three primary focus points during their review of the
proposals were to maintain the original intent of the rule; ensure continued
growth of the technology for the pilots, instructors, and repairmen; and ensure
the continued lowering of economic and regulatory barriers for participants.
The revisions are set to go into effect on April 2, 2010.

EAA's comprehensive reaction to each of the rule changes can be read
here. Look for EAA's in-depth analysis of the FAA's issued revisions in this
week's e-Hotline.

In my younger days we used to put aluminum window screening sandwiched
between 2 carburetor spacers to help atomize fuel. Theory was that the
screen creates micro vortexes and helps with a more even air/fuel mixture
distribution to all cylinders. We didn't have a dino machine to test this
out, but my guess would be that we gained at least 5hp.
This might be worth looking into for the uneven burn problems.

Subject: KR> better than no sunset at all...

Today wasn't a day that most people would think of flying, but I was at the
airport all day replacing the o-ring in my Cleveland brake caliper and
bleeding that side, then practically rebuilt my air compressor at the
hangar, went on to design a mezzanine for the back of the hangar, then
cleaned up a bit, among other things. Just before sunset it finally quit
raining, so I took off and did a trip around the pattern, then a 200 mph
pass down the runway (had to holler "YHAAH" in the pullup), let my
momentum get me to downwind altitude, and then landed at idle. Almost a
record short duration for one flight, but on downwind I got a picture that's
as close as anybody in these parts got to the sun
today...http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/sunsets/10012423m.jpg . You
shoulda been there

Hello Netters,
I know this message is not KR related but I need to aquire several copies
of the September 2007 issue of Sport Avaition. The "Gone West" column in
this particular issue has my father Ron Freibergers name in it. Many of you
knew my dad through the Net and quite a bit of his advise can still be found
in the archives.
I have 4 siblings so the target Im looking for is 5 copies, I could not
think of a better place to ask than here.
Cheers,

- Original Message -

I am just curious. Has anyone ever flown a plane that has lighter stick
forces than a KR, fly by wire does not count???

The 1940 Bellanca with a stick (14-12 I think) had very light forces.
A friend of mine who had flown in the Battle of Briton and later with
the US Navy in the Pacific and even later in P51s with the USAF flew
mine and said it had a roll rate that equaled anything he had ever
climbed into. He may have been biased though as he just loved
Bellancas. The '46 '47 (14-13) with a wheel was also flown with just
the finger tips. However, the next generation had much heavier
controls. Most first time Bellanca pilots flying those earlier models
that had a Cessna background usually found themselves suddenly 20
feet or better above the runway the first time they tried to flair
out. If you know of one on your airfield try to get a ride in it. It
is a tail dragger but once you get use to it you can land it almost
anywhere and under almost any conditions. The next generation with the
Lycoming engine and the hydraulic operated gear had a very heavy feel.

If you go back to my first reply - I said I limit my "Seat Weight" to 360
lbs. That's total for both seats! Now being that the seats are side by side
- I have found through various weights in the right and left seats it
doesn't make any difference how you distribute that weight, so I would
extrapolate from that, that up to 360 lbs on the center line should be just
fine.

Don't know how I can make it any plainer!

My particular situation is 145/150# left seat, 210# Right seat and I didn't
notice any imbalance requiring a stick deflection. I have a header tank, I
would think that if you had a fuel inbalance in wing tanks it would be
noticeable.

Solo from the left seat it handles the same except it climbs faster and
requires a little more up trim.

Thank you. I mean all things considered as follows:
2 seat 1 occupant in either seat; would this equal a single
centered seat single occupant or does the weight have
to be distributed side to side for max carrying capability.
