KR> Add-on Lighting

2011-12-01 Thread airgu...@comcast.net
Do some minor surgery to the bottom of the wing toward the leading edge and run
your wires. Mine are just floxed into position as I didn't wat the weight of
the pipe. Repair the bottom and done. I think that depending on where you fly
strobes are a necessity.

Wings are primed, and nicely crafted--at least in the unexperienced opinion

KR> the iFly700 gps

2011-09-23 Thread airgu...@comcast.net

Since it's friday:  This is a very reasonably priced tablet gps.

Coming Soon - Version 6 Software Update

Great News!

Version 6 Software Update is in the final stage of beta testing. Barring any
major delays, Version 6 will be released for full production next week. Thanks
to all of our iFly owners for the great feedback and a special thanks to our
beta testers for their hard work and efforts to help make this be our most
successful update yet. Below are the upcoming software release features and a
brief description.

Geo-Referenced Approach Plates and Airport Diagrams - You will now see your
route line, airplane location, flight path, instruments and more on the
Approach Plates and Airport Diagrams. Build or modify your approach directly on
the actual Plates. We have also improved the options and performance for
quickly accessing the plate you're looking for.

ADS-B Weather & Traffic Support for ADS-B receivers - We've added support for
ADS-B weather and traffic service. Currently we support the Sky Radar:
http://www.skyradar.net/ and we're adding support for NavWorx. More information
regarding these resources to follow. See current NexRad radar and live weather
updates with no monthly fees. If the 3rd party ADS-B receiver supports traffic,
the iFly GPS will show reported traffic and pop traffic alerts accordingly.

Enhanced Weather Downloads - You will now be able to download TAFs and Winds
Aloft as well as METAR data. The "METAR Mode" will be replaced with "Weather
Mode". Touch anywhere on the screen and instantly pop a weather report based on
data closest to your touch point. You can then select METAR, TAF or Winds Aloft
as you wish.

Additional UI Enhancements -

? Vector Mode - Added private airports, lakes, rivers, more roads.
? Added "Direct to this Waypoint" to the Flight Plan form.
? Added "Connected Device Status" option to Menu.
? Improved menus and many other fixes and enhancements.

Get ready for a new Adventure with your iFly GPS!

For those that did, have you found it useful? Is it worth carrying that
extra weight in the tail to do so?
For those who didn't, have you been able to maintain your aircraft without?

To get the approach plate completely visible, select the plate, hit the turn
page button and then zoom to set it at full page. I find it quite readable. I
like the fact that you can drag the sectional about on the screen to see
"ahead" or off to the side of your route. I'm not sure it will ever replace an

KR> fuel site gauge

2011-01-09 Thread airgu...@comcast.net

I have found that the lines behind or dark and light background at an angle
didn't seem to help. As a confirmed whino, I like the cork/pea idea. The clear
tygon is the best yet. I will remake the gauge with clear and a dark cork. The
fuel is filtered downstream of this.

The fuel gauge to me is extraneous but required. I use engine time and a
gal/per hour calc in all aircraft. This is because the standard spam can gauges
are notoriously inacurate.

Also, are there things that I should definitely leave original.

Maps can be oriented both North-Up and Track-Up (as of latest software update).

I'm needing to replace my old Lawrance 500 as the data base is 5+

if I have room to install it around my panel.  In looking at the KR

location on top of the instrument panel and set it on the "compass
rose" screen and use it to replace my compass, move my radio from the
bottom of my panel to the upper left where the Lawrance is currently
mounted, and put the IFly700 between my legs below the
panel.  Question for those using one, will the screen rotate 90 degrees?

2010-08-09 Thread airgu...@comcast.net

I am in the taxi phase of training myself to fly a KR2 stretch taildragger. My
taxi speeds are around 30 kts. No matter what position the stick is in (forward
or aft) the tail remains on the ground. I remember seeing some folks at the
fly-in turning their aircraft 180 degrees by full power with no forward speed.
I would have expected some movement upward of the tail by now. Doesn't even
seem light on the tailwheel yet.

When does the back end of this thing get going?

Well, my latest folly with intake manifolds failed miserably.  It started
quite easily, but refused to increase power past 2000 RPM.  So, I'll chuck
that wad of cash in the trash and try something else.  But, I did find out
that you can start your VW engine quite easily with the primer going to only
one of the intakes at the head.  So, I would assume that the same would be
true for the Corvair.

Well I found a place that says a reasonable current draw for a Sentra
starter can be as much as 200 amps, so based on that, a 2 AWG wire would be
better, and the added weight would be minimal over that short 5' distance.

KR> battery location

2009-12-13 Thread airgu...@comcast.net

Now that winter has hit in force, I am looking at "improvements" to make. One
is to move the battery from just behind the seat to some more forward location.
One is in the engine compartment and the other is just forward of the main
spar. The reason for the move is poor starting performance. The cables that I
have from the battery to the firewall are evidently crappy and if I have to do
that much work, maybe a shorter path for the volts would help too.
Where do most folks place the battery?

My experience with elongated dowel pin holes and cracked flywheels usually
stems from under torque on the flywheel retaining bolt and/or undersize
dowel  pins. It is the only place on a VW that is safe to slightly exceed max
torque  value but not more than 10%.

to
elongate in the dowel pins holes and eventually crack between the holes
which  then lets the flywheel free spin so to speak.

If memory  serves, HAPI , the company was sold to Mosler Motors in 1988 -89

many of the Mosler / TEC engines also had the acquired HAPI flywheel

A clue as to where this is (the airport identifier if there is one) would be
nice.  I think grass would be a good experience for a lot of folks.  A 2800'
grass strip is probably equivatlent to a 3600' paved strip, depending on how
tall the grass is.  Although it would be nice, I'm not sure that inside
hangar storage would be imperative.  After all, we leave them outside for
days at SNF and OSH every year.

I forgot to mention camping in my first message.  Camping on the field would
be very good.  A lot of folks have grown quite fond of it, spoiled by MVN's
camping area with the pond/swimming hole.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is proposing new and
sweeping restrictions on general aviation aircraft. The proposal (Docket
# TSA-2008-0021),  known as the "Large Aircraft Security Program"
(LASP), would impose new and onerous security regulations and
restrictions on owners, operators, pilots, and passengers, and on
general aviation (GA) airports that serve "large" aircraft.

As proposed, the LASP would apply only to aircraft with a maximum gross

I just got off the phone with the local DAR. He wants $600.00 for the

That scam has been going since the 70's and snail mail. Probably still works -
why else would it still be around.

KR> aileron control horn

2008-10-12 Thread airgu...@comcast.net
Does anyone have a picture of the aileron control horn and its hookup. If so,
you can send it to me off net atairgu...@comcast.net (don't want to creat a
500 person fuss on the net). I see all of the writeup and dimensions in the
manual but can't seem to visualize it. Guess I need a fly-in so I can snoop.
