KR> 90 degree Sides On Fuselage
I have a question for those who have built their fuselages with the strait 90 degree sides. I am about to join my two fuselage sides and I plan on just building them vertical rather than going the banna boat route. But, before I start, I foresee an issue with the tail that needs clarification. Because the tail post is set at a 7 degree angle, the width of the fuselage at the tailpost will not be constant like it is on the original. See here for a picture of what I am describing, http://n394ja.com/?attachment_id=333. My thoughts are to build the fuselage strait and then just bend in the bottom longeron after that last fuse station. I'm curious what others have done or would do in this area? Thanks, Sean Duggan Savannah, GA KR2S - http://n394ja.com/
KR> Progress Report
Hello KRnet, I am now pleased to report that the new fuselage sides on my KR2S are complete. Pics can be seen here, http://n394ja.com/?p=326 If you don't remember, I posted a few months back that all four of my fuse longerons cracked when I bent the fuselage to shape. I worked through the possibility of repairing them, but in the end decided to scrap all of my work and rebuild. This time around I soaked my longerons and bent them to shape. After the spruce dried, I built the rest of the truss in its final shape. I will say that this was a little more labor intensive than I wanted, but there will be no crackage! This will be the last bit of progress for a while as I will be moving in a week. I am going to be living in Savannah, GA. Is there anybody up in that area? KR> Nvaero contact help
Has anyone heard from Steve Glover at nvaero recently? I'm having a hard time getting in contact with him. I'm waiting on an order containing landing gear, wheels, and a few other bits of hardware. Communications stopped about 3 weeks ago and all of the outlets posted on the website have not reached him. Does anybody know another way to contact him? KR> Progress Report & Another Cracked Longeron Story
It's good to see some progress being made by fellow builders. I'd like to contribute to the progress reports with my update. Today I managed to flip the "boat," and unfortunately, I will be adding to the list of cracked longeron stories : (. Upon inspection of my boat structure, I found 5 cracks! Two cracks in one longeron and one in each of the rest. They all reside in the bay directly behind the aft spar. I already knew that this could be an issue after seeing the problems run into by other builders. The cracks in the upper longerons seem reasonable to repair, a splice joint like the one shown in Darren Crompton's build log should fix the problem. It is the lower longerons that have me worried. Since the lower longerons are already glued on two sides to plywood, I have no idea how I will cut out a section for replacement. Also, the area that these cracks occur are in close proximity to a vertical stiffener. Too close to get the proper splice length. So at this point what are my options? -Attempt repairs and hope for some luck on the bottom longerons? -Cut my losses and start a new boat. (I've only used about $900 worth of wood and glue and spent 100hrs building)? -Look for someone selling a boat, toss mine and continue forward... Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated. My motivation is dwindling. Some photos are updated on my site. Thanks! Sean Duggan Vero Beach, FL KR2S - http://n394ja.com/
KR> update on project
Hi Robert, Thanks for posting the link to your photo bucket. I'm relatively new to the KR group (last 6 months or so) and haven't seen pictures of your build until today. I'm very impressed after viewing your photos, very clean work! I noticed that your wing design branches out from the norm among other differences. My plan is to build a stock wing, with the new airfoil, but I like how you built your wing separate from the fuselage on jig. There is not enough space in my garage to build my wings on the fuselage like the plans suggest. So I'm going to have to create a similar jig that will hold the spars while I construct the wing. Do you have any details and photos that you can share on how you built your wing jig? KR> Dragonfly Canopy 3D CAD files
Hey guys, I visited Mark Lougheed's awesome web page were he digitized data on the Dragonfly canopy. However, it seams that the links for the cad data files are dead. I was wondering if anyone still has a copy of these lying around on their hard drives? Thanks! Sean Duggan
KR> Photo request (90 Degree Fuse Sides)
I am at the point where I need to decide if I am going the banana boat route or the square fuselage route. I've done my research on it here in the archives and I've seen a few of the current builders websites that have done the square fuselage. I'm pretty much sold on the idea, the only thing holding me back is aesthetics. Does anyone have photos of a completed KR with square sides? I'd like to see if or how it changes the final appearance of the airplane. The build log photos I've seen are great but I'd like to see the finished product if I could. Thanks, Sean Duggan
KR> T-88 Question
Here is a quick question. Does excess T-88 have to be removed from a wood surface before another piece of wood can be bonded to that surface? In my situation, excess glue has pooled on and around the outside of some of my fuselage truss joints. The plywood and partial longerons that will be glued to the fuselage trusses in the upcoming steps will need a good structural bond. Will I need to sand off the excess glue so that I have a clean wood surface to bond to, or can I just sand things level and bond to the cured T-88? Regards, Sean Duggan
KR> Sun & Fun
I saw that someone else posted about Sun & Fun earlier in the week. I didn't see any responses so I'm still curious if any KR builders will be there? I plan on making it out on Thursday and would love to talk with any netters that will be there. Regards, Sean Duggan
KR> Longeron Splices
Thanks for the help guys, the joints are complete which means I can move forward this afternoon. BTW, I just finished setting up a site to document the build at http://n394ja.com/ I look forward to any questions or comments! <> <>
KR> Longeron Splices
Thanks for the help Pat. I got the longerons spliced today. I won't lie, making that long cut was no easy feet. It took great care to get the pieces to line up nicely. I think it is funny how the first step of my KR build was to fix the first problem. Hopefully this is not a sign for how the rest of the build will go, lol Regards, Sean From: Patrick and Robin Russo <patru...@myfairpoint.net> To: KRnet <kr...@mylist.net> Sent: Sat, March 5, 2011 2:54:21 PM Subject: Re: KR> Longeron Splices Sean I am imagining a scarf about 7 inches long (11-12 times 5/8"). That will serve you very well. One added measure is to keep the scarf slope visible to the side so that the side ply further adds to the strenght of the glue joint. You could put them all in the same bay without worry but more assurance would be gained by having the upper longeron scarfs at the firewall end because this will later be doubled up. In this case I would leave the scarf slope visible to the top. It will more readly conform to the curve. Good luck. KR> Longeron Splices
Hey Neters, I received my wood in good condition from wicks last week. Since then, I have been preparing to build the fuselage sides. This morning I started laying out my jig board for the sides. After placing the top 5/8X5/8" longeron on the table, I immediately noticed that it was too short. All of the long 5/8x5/8" spruce longerons that I received are a hair over 12' long and I need about 13' for the build. So at this point I am left only with scarfing on a longer piece of spruce to extend my longerons. I am looking for some advice on where to put the scarf joints. I need to lengthen the top and the bottom longerons. I figure that somewhere close to the tail is a good place for the bottom longeron scarf, as there is minimal contour that far back. Maybe I can do the same for top longeron to conserve my long pieces of wood. Would there be any strength issues putting the top and bottom scarf joints in the same bay? I'm considering the bay between Fuse Stations L and M. Thanks for help. Sean
KR> Introducing myself
Alright, I've decided that I've been lurking in the builder sites of KRNet.org too long. It is time to introduce myself to the group. My name is Sean Duggan. I'm a recent college graduate living in Vero Beach, FL and I'm about to begin a KR-2S project. I purchased a set of KR-1 plans in July but soon decided that I wanted an extra seat. There also seemed to be more information available on the KR-2 and 2S so I changed my mind and bought a set of KR-2S plans. So far I have ordered Spruce from Wick's in mid October, but due to an issue with their supplier, my spruce kit is just now being cut. So I should be in green here in just a few more short weeks! So, I'd just like to say greetings! Regards, Sean Duggan P.S. Any KRNetters near Vero Beach, FL?
