I have replaced my starter on my engine with only 74 hours. The clutch Drive
Unit started to go bad I didn't want to take any chances and what they wanted
for the rebuild that unit I bought a new skytec starter. The reason I went with
a skytech is just what Jeff had mentioned I didn't want to go through the
trouble of plugging that barring hole with the skytec starter you don't have
?to plug the bearing hole.

--

Just as a point of clarification, the old key start type starters had a bearing
mounted inside the case that had to be removed to install most other starter
replacements. Sometimes in the process of pulling that bearing, the bearing
needles can escape. I've seen the needle get sucked up into the oil pump and
trash the accessory case. Skytech has a starter model that has a nose piece
that fits into the bearing, so you don't have to remove it.

The even older Delco starters (like I had), identified by the pull cable to
engage the starter has the starter pinion gear riding on a shaft that is
clamped between the two case halves. To install any other type of replacement
starter, you have to go into the back of the accessory case with a die grinder
and cut off the 1/2" steel pinion shaft. It throws a lot of abrasive
contaminants and metal throughout the accessory case in the process, so it
takes a lot of careful cleaning before you decide to fill the sump with oil and
fire it up again. The screen and filter will capture the contaminants, but the
oil pump is susceptible to damage if it ingests this stuff.

There are 2 versions of the Diehl case out there

The older one does NOT use a Subaru auto starter, but rather as Rotax
2-stroke (Skidoo/Seadoo) starter...

Thank you all for the input.
I did not get an answer at Diehl.
James, you are correct. It is a 1992 Subaru Legacy non turbo automatic
starter.
It sure is nice to hear that engine run again, it has been quite some time.

KR> Starter to fit Diehl case?

2008-10-12 Thread Bill Hucker
I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a standard starter that fits the
Diehl Accy. case? (1835cc VW Great Plains engine.)

I know they are available from Great Plains or Diehl, but pricy, would there
be a rebuilt one from an auto parts store or on-line? I tried a standard VW
Bug starter but it wouldn't fit. I also tried looking up the KR archives but
nothing jumped out at me. Thanks!

I'm going on my sometimes faulty memory here, but it seems like Dan used a
geared starter off a Subaru from the late 80's. I wish I knew more
specifics, but maybe somebody else can add details.

I think if you ask any of the good auto electricians, they will have a box
full of cintered bronze bushes all sizes. You'll find one to fit easily, I
wouldn't think it would have to be a special part number for your starter.

Hi Lee,I had this problem with my Revmaster and on the advice of one of
our oldest and most revered gurus, I ditched the Bosch and found a Subaru
starter in my local scrap yard,-cost about $35 in your money as I recall.
It has its own solenoid incorporated and is much better engineered(needle
bearings as opposed to p/bronze bush etc). You need to make a 1/4" ally
adapter plate, but the result is worth the effort.(Thanks Dan!)

Lee,
There were several VW shops out there in Phoenix/Mesa area, check with them.
They almost always recommend replacing the bushing whenever you replace the
starter I wouldn't doubt if it's the same bushing.

I was thinking about my last post about turning the stator winding around to
get the motor to turn the opposite direction. I hope no one busted wires loose
trying it. I remembered that the motor I was working with had identical end
