[lace] Lacemaker monument

2003-10-30 Thread Pauline Norris
I know it is early in the morning, but I suddenly realised that I have
several different postcards of three different lacemaker monuments in Spain,
now I cannot find the original E-mail from what region in Spain Arachne
friends would like to see the pictures of the monuments. I can't believe I
am the only one lucky enough to have these.

One is a 'bronze' looking sculpture - reverse of postcard just says The
Lacemaker Barcelona

One is a white marble Lacemaker sitting on a very large block/platform of
marble - Almagro

One is in stone - the lacemaker sitting on a very large block/platform of
stone, not as high as the marble statue, this lady has a headdress, shorter
dress, and boots on her feet - Camarinas - Galicia

The first two sculptures are definitely more elegant, but even so, how
wonderful to have three sculptures of a Lacemaker???

I don't know Spain, so if these are the missing monuments that you would
like to see, someone please E-mail me, and I will ask my husband to scan
them in for you all, if not, I too am interested in seeing even more
sculptures in spain of other lacemakers.

[lace] Flanders Question

2003-10-30 Thread Ian Chelle Long
Gidday all,

Has anyone made the piece called Circular Mat With Peas In The Round, on
page 33/34 of Inge Theuerkauf's Tierisch Flandrisch ?

If so can you tell me which method you used to join the end to the start ?

I'm thinking of doing this piece, and looking at the photo and the working
diagram it looks to me like the start join have been done using the
normal Torchon type method rather than the more European overlapping
sewing with a needle way. I would like to do it using the overlapping way
but am wondering if it would work successfully ?

[lace] hello

2003-10-30 Thread Dewi Wong
Hi everyone,

It was nice to go back on Arachne after being absent from the list for
several years. I still recognise some names and especially nice to see
some of you at the IOLI's 50th anniversary.

Isn't Janice Blair's swan mask beautiful. Congratulations, Janice!

I missed the Ithaca Lace Day, but was happy to have visited the Lutton
Museum, the Cecil Higgins Gallery in Bedford, The Allhallow Museum and
the Honiton Lace shop on my travel to UK recently. I received a lot of
travel tips from Robin Panza and Betsy Sykes, my local lacemaking
friends.

[lace] RE: New address of the Association des dentellières du Québec Inc

2003-10-30 Thread Ann Genest
Hello,

Thanks to the many lacemakers who came to our open doors day. We had more than 175
peoples and had a lot of fun...but only few pennies left in the wallet at the end ! !
!

Some told me that they didn't have the good address to join us. I made a search on
internet and I was surprise to see differents address. Here is the good one:

Ann Genest, présidente
Association des dentellières du Québec Inc
160 route 211
St-Cyprien de Napierville, Québec Canada J0J 1L0
(514) 990-2576

Please, could you make the correction on your web site. Thank you

We are around 175 lacemakers all over the Québec and our meetings are always the 4th
Friday of the month. We make lace in the afternoon, after we lunch together and have
some talk about lace, tricks and other subjects in the evening. In October we have an
Open doors day and in the summer exhibition or demo in different areas (outside with
the lovely sun). Our library have more than 300 books and we make a bulletin /4
times a year. The next meeting will be November 28th and it will be our Christmas
lunch. Every lacemaker will bring their special receipe and a nice Christmas
ornement. We will have some little draw from Santa Clauss.

Welcome to every lacemaker. (if you visit Montreal, call us we will try to meet you
and talk about lace)

Have a nice week-end

It was a very nice sunrise this morning in my little country and not to cold. The

[lace] Lacemakers in Southern CA

2003-10-30 Thread Jo Ann Eurell
I have heard from Marilyn Niven. She was evacuated for a day and is back
at her home.

Doretha Albee has evacuated to her daughter's house. Doretha lives in
Santee and the fire has not reached there yet.

We all send our thoughts and prayers to Southern California that this will
end soon.

Re: [lace] Flanders Question

2003-10-30 Thread Carole Lassak
I don't know that I've made this exact Flanders pattern, but I've used the
overlap method of joining several Flanders pieces and have been please with
those results every time. Much neater than a Torchon join--nearly
invisible.

[lace] Needlelace and varigated

2003-10-30 Thread Jane Viking Swanson
Hi All, I have been having so much fun with my Needlelace!! So far I
finished the class piece, made another flower with two leaves and have a
third flower done (the last in orchid pink for me). I've also thought up
some possible Christmas designs for small pins to wear. I'm hoping to get a
number of small pieces done for Christmas presents. Lots more practice (and
fun) for me and gifts done too!

I *have* to pick up a piece morning and evening. It's so much fun!! My
hands love playing with a needle, it's like sewing on a thousand sequins and
I used to do that a lot. The practice is helping.
I still have some kind of mental block about the Pea Stitch but I
found the hand-out from class so I will keep that with the NL. I
keep thinking I know how to do it and end up with another snarl of thread.
I miss not being able to write notes on my pattern. I guess
I'll just have to do that before putting the contact paper on. On the
second piece I buttonholed around 3/4 of a leaf before I remembered that
there were supposed to be three more threads couched under the buttonholing
: ( I've been getting reacquainted with my seam ripper.

I am pleased to announce that I did get a leaf done with the Corded Single
Brussels stitch where the stitched row is angled to the vein in the middle.
I have a tendency to go up on the right side of the row (working left to
right) so making the veins go down was really going against my grain (like
taking that color test!).

Thanks for all the varigated comments, especially about dying the threads
myself. I forget about using vinegar or salt to set the dye.
I'll let you know what I come up with. My plan was for a small area
that would look like water with the varigated thread. You all have lots of
good ideas. I can see that choosing the section of thread to use, instead
of just how it comes off the spool, could be very useful in getting all
sorts of looks. I'll give it a try on my sampler first!

[lace] wonderful old pillow on ebay

2003-10-30 Thread Clay Blackwell
There is an old pillow on ebay that seems to have a solid
provinance and reflects a remarkable heritage. I hope it
can be bought by someone who will appreciate it for what it
is and will make it available for other lacemakers to
appreciate!

I'm really trying hard to find a word which rhymes exactly' with orange,
for I feel that the second vowel sound is not as strong as the i in
inge. It's more the one written as a back to front small e in phonetics.

The closest word I can think of right now in Australian English would be
Lozenge.

[lace-chat] :) Fwd: Finding Inner Peace

2003-10-30 Thread Tamara P. Duvall
I think I've seen it before, but it's still funny...

From: M.K.
I am passing this on to you because it has definitely worked for me.
By  following the simple advice I read in an article, I have finally
found inner peace. It reads: The way to achieve inner peace is to
finish all the things you've started.

I looked around to see all the things I started and hadn't finished.

So, today I have finished one bottle of white wine, a bottle of red
wine, a bottle of Baileys, my Prozac, a large box of chocolates and a
quart of beer. You have no idea how good I feel.

You may pass this on to those you feel are in need of Inner Peace...

Now this strikes me as something Gilbert Sullivan would have come up with.
If anyone could force things into rhyming, they could! (Very Model of a
