[lace] French Fans

2004-04-09 Thread Jo Christodoulides
Hello Folks,
I'm usually a lurker, but I'd like to start a bobbin lace pattern which has, what they
call French Fans on the outside. The only trouble is, I've never learned how to make
French Fans. There are 10 pin holes on the outside of the fan and 4 on the inside.
It's a Biggins pattern (a mat), so maybe Vivienne could help me.
Does anyone know if there's a website describing how to make French fans? I've
looked through all my books (all 3 of them!!!) and can't find them anywhere.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Jo
Happy Easter!

[lace] OIDFA Congress in Prague

2004-04-09 Thread Tamara P. Duvall
Gentle Spiders,

It's official! Got my confirmation today :) I will be in the freehand
lace workshop (1st choice; have been curious about freehand lace for a
couple of years)... Making lace with Peter Rabbit, er... *George*
(Juraj) Rabbit (Zajonc)

And I will be at both the official "do's" -- the general meeting and
the dinner. But I've decided to pass the post-Congress tour; will take
a couple of day trips instead *during* the Congress. Just as well I
decided to do that, too; got my "investments statement" for the quarter
yesterday and, where (on the interest from the same principal) 3 yrs
ago I was able to go to Tonder *and* to bring a friend from Poland for
a visit, this year I *might* be able to pay for the gas to take me to
the airport and back (50 miles). With luck, I'll have some change left
to pay for the public toilets in Warsaw and Kalisz (visiting friends
and family ahead of the Congress)... Getting involved in a war
seems to be an expensive proposition... :(

As I also paid for my ticket today, the trip is beginning to look
"real", and the time's started ticking very loudly. I may have to
expand my "lace time" (on the pillow, at the drawing board, on the
'puter writing instructions...; I move with the light ) to more than
the current 8-10 hrs a day (thank goodness for spring and days which
are longer at both ends. But Arachne-time may have to be trimmed
severely)... I wish I could say I'll appear at the Congress wearing a
spider collar (the one on the Irish site *was* stupenduous), but it's
bloody unlikely :)

Hope to see again/meet many of you there,
-

Hi All, Thanks for the Irish Lace site. The spider web collar and

beautiful. Aren't those assymetrical fan sticks? Quite spectacular!

Hi All, I didn't read far enough to see that the seller talked about
filling them with oil. If I've learned anything from all of you it's that
lace maker's lamps are filled with water! Since they're just like
the ones that some of you got from the National Park Service that
explains how one seller got three of these "rare" lamps .

Re: [lace] New IOLI Bulletin

2004-04-09 Thread Clay Blackwell
I have had the incredibly good fortune to be Betty's
houseguest in Philadelphia when I attended workshops they
sponsored... one with Ulrike Lohr, and the other with
Michael Giusiana! Not only were the workshops wonderful,
but being a member of Betty MacDonald's household for
several days (on two different occasions!) were treats that
equalled the wonderful workshops.

I have seen her lace crab "up close and personal"! It
defies description!! The cover of the bulletin manages to
give a wonderful approximation of the piece, but in "real
life", it's even more breath-taking!! She is a wonderful
person, a gifted artist, and if I ever have another chance
to take one of her workshops, I'm going to jump on it with
both feet - and I recommend the same to anyone else!

[lace] Re Rare Lacemakers Oil Lamp

2004-04-09 Thread Diana Smith
Evening everyone
I think the clue here is the fact that these lamps are called *oil* lamps
and were actually used to hold oil and wick. I should imagine that the wick
holder for many of this type have been lost or broken over the years, I have
two still complete with the holders, one wick holder is made from metal the
other ceramic/pot.
Some years ago I experimented by filling one of these lamps with water then
lined up candle, lamp and pillow - couldn't see a thing ;)))
Though they are often called *lacemakers* lamp they were used by other
trades and professions, and the candle stool as seen on the postcard on ebay
was also used by Northamptonshire shoemakers on their workshops.

Buying from The Lace Guild or from authorized US distributors means

Push the crochetneedle horizontal as soon as possible. Push it further
through the loop until the thread is on the shaft. Only then start to pull
with the crochet needle still horizontal. The hook is sharp and cuts the
thread I discoverd when experimenting with stripped electical wire.

Dear Michelle,

This sounded so familiar. I moved from country to country in the '50's,
'60's and '70's, sometimes making lace, sometimes making babies. I know it's a
hectic time, made difficult by the demands made by various immigration
authorities, but you will survive, and one day, be able to look back on the experience
with pride. In spite of the current problems, you know you're lucky to have
the opportunity. Learn all you can, take pictures, save ethnic bits and pieces
and above all, and if you have children, try to make sure they are happy too.

Dear Janet
as you are particularly interested in Elizabethan and Renaissance lace, I
would recommend a little book called ELIZABETHAN LACE by Gillian Day. She
concentrates on plaited bobbin lace, which is the basis of the Elizabethan
style. She also gives basic instructions for simple needle-lace, reticella
and lacis. There's a lot in a small space!

I don't alas know whether it is still in print, but do get hold of it if you

[lace] Normandy Lace, etc. from the Ringling Collection

2004-04-09 Thread TwoHappyBees
Hello all,

DH and I have just returned from Sarasota, Florida where we visited the
Ringling (of circus fame) mansion, Ca' d'Zan, and the Ringling Museum of Art. For
anyone traveling in the area, do visit the mansion to see a nice example of
Normandy lace as a bed covering in Mable Ringling's boudoir. In the museum,
there was a nice collection of 9 lace fans, including two very nice Chantilly
examples, and others in Brussels lace and needle lace. There was also a very
nice large Venetian needle lace tablecloth on the dining table in the mansion.
The Ringlings were very fond of Venetian style and the mansion overlooking the
bay was designed to resemble the architecture they had admired in Venice. The
furnishings include many items collected on visits there as well but I was
surprised by the unexpected lace sightings!
