[lace] Neo-Classical Loves of the Gods Lace series?

2006-04-17 Thread Dmt11home
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a huge lace coverlet composed of handmade
droschel strips and applied Brussels Bobbin lace dating from the Napoleonic
era which depicts Diana and her shepherd lover Endymion (plate 76, Marian
Powys, Lace and Lacemaking).

In the Brussels Musees Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire there is a cushion cover
with Mars, Venus, and Cupid (or Return of the Warrior) Risselin-Steenebrugen,
M., Trois Siecles de Dentelles aux Musees Royaux d' Art et d'Histoire.
Brussels, 1980, p. 488, fig. 328. Also in that museum there is Tableau en
dentelle
with Apollo and the Metamorphosis of Daphne, illustrated in
Risselin-Steenebrugen, p. 487, fig 327. This is also shown in figure 369 and
369A in Santina
Levey's Lace: A History.

In the Buffalo Museum of Science in New York there appears to be another of
the series which shows a woman with a floating veil forming a circle overhead
and a reclining man. It is rumored that there is another of this series in
Belgrade, the donation of the late Michael I. Pupin of Columbia University
according to an article appearing in the Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin,
new series, 1944-45, pp, 204-208.

A researcher is trying to locate any other examples of this series that she
believes may all be Loves of the Gods. Has anyone seen anything anywhere that
is close in style and fabrication and that might be part of the series?

2006-04-17 Thread Carol Adkinson
Hi All,

I hope this 'advertising' isn't illegal in any way, but I have been asked to
tutor a Beginners/Intermediate course in Bobbin Lace Making at the Assington
Mill, near Sudbury in Suffolk UK.Unfortunately, it is in danger of being
cancelled, as not enough people have signed up!The three-day course was
scheduled to run from the 10th July, 11th July and 12th July, and if anyone in
the UK is interested, the website is below. It contains all the info., so if
you are interested, do get in touch with Anne Holden, at the Mill.

If it is wrong to put the info. on the Arachne, I do apologise, but I felt
that it would be important to let anyone, who could go, hear about it!

[lace] Dublin, Ireland

2006-04-17 Thread Micki
could anybody suggest places to visit in dublin where I could possibly stock
up on anything to do with lace - threads, carrickmacross books, needlelace,
anything?

We will spend four days in Dublin this coming June.

Any ideas for Faro, Portugal - any museums, shops etc., worth visiting - we
will hopefully visit Portugal in September, possibly even do a day trip to
Lisbon.

There is a pillow and some lace on display in the museum in Lagos. (At
least there was in 1998!) Lots of other things to see there too.

[lace] Mez thread

2006-04-17 Thread Alice Howell
I recently got a supply of lacemaking things from an
estate, and it included two spools of a thead that is
strange to me.

Mez Iris 50g spool, 100% Baumwolle, Made in W.
Germany.

It has no size numbering on it. Does anyone know if
iris denotes the size...and what it is?

Thanks,

Mez is part of the Coats Anchor group. The name Mez is often used in
Europe whereas it would be Coats or Anchor in Britain or US. I haven't
come across Iris before, but it's probably the name of a style of
thread that only came in one thickness so it is in effect the size.

Made in W Germany means that it's a good 15 years old.

[lace] A bit more about Ruskin lace

2006-04-17 Thread Aurelia Loveman
...just to add another word or two about Ruskin lace: I have a very
sweet little book by Elizabeth Prickett called Ruskin Lace and Linen
Work. published by Batsford. The inside flap of the dust jacket says
that in 1894 John Ruskin gave his name to a form of embroidery which
was practised in the Lake District and which incorporated three forms
of needlework: drawn thread, cut linen and needlepoint lace.

The book itself is like having a marvelous workshop always at hand,
and the diagrams and illustrations are excellent. The frontispiece
(to die for!) is a Sampler at the Victoria and Albert Museum,
London. This was a group effort involving 60 students, and took five
winters to complete. The accession number at the V A is T18-1979,
if anybody wants a look.

Re: [lace] Re: Ruskin lace in Coniston, UK

Quoting [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Jane,

I had a chance to visit Coniston 2004 when I travelled around England and
Scotland looking for lace in various museums. The collection is wonderful. For
those who have the book Ruskin Lace, it is a chance to see pieces and to
possibly meet Elizabeth Prickett. She teaches a class in the area. We had a
wonderful morning looking at her samples which were pictured in the book and
talking about lace, linen and the difficulty in getting the correct supplies
today.

The museum is a very interesting place with mining and history of the area on
display. On the opposite side of the valley from the main heavy travel, it
takes a detour to get to it but well worth the trip.

Quoting Jane Viking Swanson [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

Hi All, While I am getting the millionth update to the Anti-Virus program
I'll add a little on Ruskin lace. In The Identification of Lace by Pat
  Earnshaw she says:

Subsequently, he brought back designs of the so-called Greek lace from
Italy, and the handspun linen was decorated with cutwork, drawnwork,
reticella and needleweaving. As with most revival work, even that which
carefully copied old designs, a certain stiffness of appearance
distinguishes it from the verve and spontaneity of the 300-400 year old
  originals.

No pictures, unfortunately. Thanks for your great report Carol!! Sounds
like a wonderful place to visit!

[lace-chat] sp thank you

2006-04-17 Thread sof

Hello my SP,

Wonderfull you parcel arrived just for Easter!! 10 days by mail.

What a lovely box in leather. I ever saw someone like it but don't have.
I'll put thread on it.

The rabbits are lovely : good idea in sweets. The caramel one had a
little problem : it looks like a jigsaw so I begin immediatly to eat it!!

The over sweet are very good too.

I like postcards. So I know a liitle more germany and put the lace
postcards in my collection.

The wooden bowl for pins is a very good idea. I put it on my pillow and
tie up. My friends would be impress by my organisation.

Thank you very much for all. I am very happy to have a SP and wait for
next month.

Best wishes

Sof from France

The father answers:
Your Mom and I first got together in a chat room on Yahoo. Then I
set up a date via e-mail with your Mom and we met at a cyber-cafe. We
sneaked into a secluded room, where your mother agreed to do a
download from my hard drive. As soon as I was ready to upload, we
discovered that neither one of us had used a firewall, and since it
was too late to hit the delete button, Nine months later a blessed

Hi Secret Pal,
I received my package from you just before Easter and it was full of wonderful
things.
The silk thread made me gasp and I will be using it soon. I have a Chantilly
pattern picked out ready to go. I just needed the thread
and now I have it! The card is always useful. Thankyou for sending me some
more. (always better than cereal box cardboard!)
You must have been at the last workshop because someone had a bobbin bag just
like the one you sent me and we all wanted one.
I know a couple of people who will be jealous! Lastly...thank you for the
beautiful piece of Torchon. Did you make it? It is so pretty.

Thanks for brightening my day again.
