There was a brief article IIRC in a European lace magazine about a
modern play where, as the picture in the article showed, a female
character stands at a lace pillow on stage.

and I found it - in the Spanish magazine La Encajera, issue No. 9. It
is also the play mentioned in another message to the list, from
Australia - that is I think the message-writer is from Australia. And
I think she mentioned the same play.
(pathetic really, how 'I think' ~)

The article about the play was written by Lia Baumeister, and the play
is "Doña Rosita la soltera" by F. Garcia Lorca as performed by the
Poncel Group Amsterdam (about 1999, going by other dates in the
magazine). The original article seems to have gone through a few
iterations before it was printed in the English supplement to the
magazine - so I'll paraphrase it rather than quote it:
"The objective of playwright Frederico Garcia Lorca when he wrote the
play was to portray a hyprocritical provincial society. It is located
in Granada, Spain; Albaicín to be exact. In a subtle way the play
expresses the complex relation of Lorca with his birthplace. The aunt
in the play is a 'lacemaker.' The actress did not know how to make
bobbin but she did a very good job..." Lia had designed a rose in
Schneeberger technique for the actress [presumably to have on the
pillow during the play]. The name of the motif is, fittingly, Doña
Rosita.

The picture I remember having seen is indeed in this magazine. The
Spanish-type pillow (cylindrical) has been rigged so that the actress
stands at it to make lace and to deliver her lines.

Yeah, I just got the other end of this phenomenon. I got a call Sunday
morning from some company asking if I'd just placed an order for a
website hosting. Nope! They said the charge originated in Korea
(which is apparently why they checked up on it). They'd received my
card number, my name, and my expiration date with the order. They said
they were cancelling the order and to call Discover and report it. I
had to have my account closed and a new card is being sent.

If you suddenly are making charges from another country, that's a red
flag for the credit card companies. And if they call you, you're not
home because you're in another country!

[lace] Bayeux Lace book - English translation

2006-07-18 Thread beth
Hi, everyone

I've just translated pages 9-14 (the introductory section explaining the basic
techniques) of the Fouriscot/Salvador book on Bayeux lace into English for
Delores - if anyone else who has the book would find an English tranlation
useful, let me know (off-list) and I'll email you a copy.
NB the translation is no use without the book as it doesn't have the diagrams,
which are the most important part.

[lace] Greek Connections for Lace & Embroidery - OIDFA

2006-07-18 Thread Jeriames
Dear Lacemakers,

This morning I've been searching for Greek-American museums and other
connections where it might be possible to order the new book on "Embroidery in
Chios"
that we were just told about.

It is possible you have already seen the pictures of the OIDFA Congress in
Greece, but if you missed the opportunity before - photos by 4 members of OIDFA
can be seen at:

http://www.oidfa.com/text/athens.htm

Some of you may recognize yourselves! Nice to have a paper copy for the
files - it came to 11 pages.

When you've seen photos, perhaps you'll start putting away money each month
toward OIDFA in 2008 in The Netherlands.

Thank you both for this, I haven't previously seen this lace and mistook the
edging for croche.. I do understand what you are saying about the edging
being needle not crochet. It is a very pretty piece and yes I do feel like
a very lucky Mum
Enjoyed looking at the site Silvia, thank you for sending it in and language
didn't matter. It feels good to see the many styles of lace made around the
world.
Sorry its taken so long to reply but at present preparing for an 11 day

Sue, and all,
If it is hand made Lefkara, it will have a needle lace edging, not
crochet.
Have another look. The typical Lefkara edge is a squared off shape with
little picots on the very edge. Quite distinctive.

[lace] IOLI - pillows and meeting

Since I am driving to Montreal with friends, I could bring a few (3) pink
styrofoam pillows with me for others to use. They are not fancy but they
are large and octogonal. Let me know if this could be of help.

Also, the Ottawa Lacemakers Guild has a display table in the vendors room.
I will be sitting at it during part of the week. We, arachneans, could
meet there at some point. I am giving the talk on Monday night during the
evening event, maybe we could meet after? Or we could meet on Sunday
afternoon when the Sales room in open. I'll be at the table.

Oooh, I am so looking forward to this!

It's the same book as that mentioned a couple of months ago on the

this could well change come 21st August).

Re: [lace] Convention, Money

2006-07-18 Thread Gail Young
Hello All
I don't think that you need to worry too much about currency. We Canadians are
very
accustomed to dealing with international guests, and especially those from
south of the
border. Most places will accept U.S. dollars cash. The merchant "converts" it
into
Canadian dollars and provides change in Canadian dollars. You may not get as
good an
exchange rate as from the bank. Canadian banks will also gladly covert U.S.
dollars
into Canadian dollars and their exchange rate is usually pretty good.

Most merchants are small and do not accept credit cards, but I am certain that
they will
be happy to accept U.S. dollars and then convert to Canadian dollars. We must,
by law,
provide change in Canadian dollars as that is the legal tender in Canada.

Trillium Bobbin Lace accepts Visa and MasterCard as well as debit cards. I
don't,
however, know if my machine accepts debit cards from banks outside of Canada.
I will
verify before the conference.

As others have suggested, it is best to shop around as exchange rates can vary.
 To find
the official exchange rate go to the Bank of Canada.

http://www.bankofcanada.ca/en/rates/exchform.html

This is the official central bank rate, you will pay a little more than this,
but it
will give you an idea.

I hope that this helps. Canadian dollars are always appreciated, but not
essential.

I'm looking forward to meeting you in Montreal!

Dear Lacemakers,
While visiting Chios on the post Congress tour, I also discovered that a
further book has been published called Embroidery in Chios. It is a sequel
to the first book, same publisher and of similar quality and size but with a
focus on the lovely Greek embroidery. As with the lace, there is a wonderful
variety of embroidery produced on the island.

Furthermore: Greek Lace in the Victoria & Albert Museum has wonderful close
up photographs of all the V and A Greek Lace which was loaned to the Benaki
Museum for the OIDFA Congress.
