I'm sure one of their members will speak with more authority on their
behalf but, in hte meantime...

They're *wonderful ladies*, full of ideas and sense of humour. They
dwell in Pennsylvania, near-about the Liberty Bell (the cracked one,
which may account for their zany sense of humour ), which rests in
Philadelphia...

I met some of them in Montreal last month and was totally charmed (but
I was also charmed by some of them whom I met before Montreal )...

Erm... Does it mean we (upside-down of you) are now officially in
(free) Fall? Eeek! But the weather *has* improved some -- the temps are
bearable (under 80F) and we needed the rain. And we've been promised
that Ernesto is moving north, drooling on us but saving his blow for
other (more northern) parts of the East Coast. Of course, there's John,
following in Ernesto's footsteps (I gues the ones in between --
Felicia? Gregory? Henrietta? Irene? -- died in their sleep )

Sounds Good to me!!! :))

[lace] Piecework Magazine.

2006-08-31 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti

What a pity the magazine is no longer available to you.

Perhaps you should treat yourself to a subscription, and have it posted to
you. That method works quite well.

It is not usually at any newsagent here on Oz, either, - that I have found,
but they have an office now in Sydney where they deal with subs. Have a
look and see if there is an office/agent in UK who deals with subscriptions.

[lace] RE:twisted thread

2006-08-31 Thread Helen Bell
Yep, that's the same problem I had, and mine is also 100/3 in ecru. I
bought it last year for my table ribbon. It's working up just fine, and
I haven't so far (touch wood, rub the hare's foot, etc) had breakages,
etc (which is a problem in Denver's dry air).

It just spins itself up into loops and the like, so when I was winding
my 60 bazillion bobbins on my electric winder, the first one was fine,
but winding the 2nd took additional care and patience to keep it from
knotting and a potential wasteage.

I have other Brok spools of 100/3 and other weights in white from a few
more years hence and don't have this problem. It's just this one spool
that is quirky.

Cheers,
Helen, Aussie in Denver

[lace] Mary Quelch 1609 sampler and Montacute House

2006-08-31 Thread Annette Meldrum
Thanks Jeri
As usual very interesting. I can tell you that I visited Montacute House in
2003 and saw the said collection which just happened to be on display at the
time. I understood that it is not always displayed as a collection.
Unfortunately there was not a catalogue or postcards or any other
publication on offer. I remember well the description of how the collection
started.

What is found? His collection was donated to The National Trust, and is
located today at Montacute House. I Googled Montacute House, but could not
get to
the pictures of the sampler collection. Perhaps someone else can find with
the information provided above. Or, perhaps there is a new booklet for
people touring Montacute House that contains pictures?

This is a most unusual sampler, given that the first dated embroidered
sampler on cloth is the 1598 Jane Bostocke, at the V&A. I once sat an hour
staring
at the Bostocke, and then had to tell Joan Edwards the story the sampler
told
me! It seems to me we might learn something by staring at the Quelch. It
happens to be a fun exercise.

Hoping some of our lace enthusiasts will be inspired to do some research and

staring at laces,

Dear PieceWork readers,

Actually, some additional projects and instructions are available at their
Website:
www.interweave.com/rd/pwprojects

With their desire to write more articles, the projects have to be somewhere
(without increasing the size of the magazine in these days of increasing
postage charges). It is often just one article per issue that makes the whole
subscription commitment to a magazine more than worthwhile!

You can also check out subscriptions at same address.

And as a new subscriber you get one free issue!

https://subscribe.pcspublink.com/magazine/Intw/subscribeForm.asp?track=JENB6&pub=PCWK&term=6

It seems to be $22 for 6 issues and the postage to international
destinations seems quite reasonable at $10/year.

You could still get a subscription to PW. Book and magazine sellers have never
carried PW in Israel, so I've subscribed since issue 10, years ago.
Occasionally, I've thought of dropping the subscription because the magazine has
become thinner and (to my mind) somewhat superficial, but every now and then a
really good article comes along.

Best wishes,

Avital

[lace] Tebbs

2006-08-31 Thread Tess Parrish
I have followed this thread with great interest, as I finished scanning
the 1907 and 1911 copies of Tebbs just a few months ago. (see
) I have
the 1978 reprint, but my aim is always to scan the originals and I was
able to get them through Interlibrary Loan, my wonderful source for so
many of the books on the Professor's site.

Going back to these originals, I don't find the pattern sheets everyone
is talking about. So I checked out the reprint. On the title page, it
says "Facsimile Edition--to which are added recently discovered
patterns prepared by the author." It seems, then, that the original
books didn't have these pattern sheets, which is why they weren't
scanned for the site. This is also an example of why I always go back
to the out-of-copyright editions (pre-1923) for inclusion on the site.
Otherwise, I don't get the book as it was originally written and
besides would also have to deal with the publishers of the modern
reprint.

However, like the rest of you, I have the four pattern sheets in the
back of my modern reprint, and I'm very grateful to you for clearing
this up for me.

[lace] Fw: Twisted Thread. And longest piece of lace

HI Irene,

I am replying through the list as this message to Irene also bounced.

I think you would be doing the right thing by rejecting that thread if it
is

twisting so much. You would get very frustrated with it as you worked and
it is not worth the anxiety.

I have a nice new scooter now, the old one died, which goes faster and

smarter than the old one. I still have the cartoon picture that another

[lace] Longest piece of lace

2006-08-31 Thread Jenny De Angelis
I remember from when I was on the lit before that there was a site where we
could send a photo of our long pieces of lace, it was to see who had made
the longest piece. Is that site still up and running? I have almost
finished about 9 metres of a narrow edging which I have stitched to net for
a bridal veil and thought it might be something to add to the page.
