The pattern of my edging is from Liisa Eeva Kortelahti. I think it's in Bobbin Lace. It takes five or more pages of the book to give the various sections of the pattern so it should be easy to find. It comes with two different corner patterns. It's name means Giant Bellflower. I loaned my book to a friend so I can't look up the page number. Hello Ann-Marie, I followed the link to your webshots, and looked through your folder of bobbin lace. I enjoyed your pictures, what beautiful laces you have made! I have a question, though, about the 2 pictures named Easter Lady. Can you tell me about them? They look to me like they are wearing a bandanna or kerchief on their head, and they have a broom? Are they riding the broom? Here in America, we have Easter Rabbits, but I've never heard of an Easter Lady. I'm just curious and enjoy learning about other countries. [lace] Lace Buttons - Birds eye buttons
Last Saturday, at Poole Bobbin Lace Circle meeting, Thelma Johns, an expert on Dorset buttons gave us a talk on their history and a demonstration of their construction. We also had a chance to have a go at making one. She didn't mention Bird's eye buttons, but searching for more information on Dorset buttons, I came on the following site, which has books and kits for sale for these buttons. The 'Fact File' is described as A5 size booklet with 16 pages. Containing detailed instructions for making:-Crosswheels, Crosswheel variations, Beaded crosswheels, High tops and Dorset Knobs, Bird's eyes - two methods, Singletons, Sea-urchin buttons. Two pages of colour photographs. Cost GBP6.00 inc postage within the UK GBP7.00 inc postage outside the UK. She takes Paypal. http://www.s105325101.websitehome.co.uk/ I know nothing more than that, but I'm going to order a copy and the Buttons, Buttons booklet. RE: [lace] Lace Buttons - Birds eye buttons
Hello Jean, I've just got in from our lace class at Broadstone and am catching up with the e-mails. I've got both these books, Jean. Very good they are too. The author is Marion Howitt, who was taught by Thelma Johns. Birds Eye buttons are very easy to make. I wonder if the Dorset ones are the same as the original enquiry. If you look at the Fact File page you will see Birds Eyes in the middle column, second and third down, and second down on the right hand column. They are soft buttons not having a horn disc or metal ring inside, so were often used on baby clothes. Liz Pass (also in Poole.) I came on the following site, which has books and kits for sale for these buttons. http://www.s105325101.websitehome.co.uk/ PS Just got the Apr/May edition of 'Stitch' which has an article about Dorset Feather Stitchery, developed from the embroidery on agricultural labourers' smocks. Re: [lace] Laminating lace
On 3/22/07, Diana Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: A while back there was some discussion on laminating lace could anyone tell me what the consensus was? IIRC the consensus was lamination is 'iffy' - for some the results were disappointing and couldn't be undone without ruining the lace. For others it was 'ok' - but the plastic sleeves are better. Again, IIRC, what followed from the laminating topic was a how-to and many tips on getting the lace into the respective plastic sleeve. If sleeves aren't readily available, and especially for a one-of, you could use a plastic page protector cut to size, and stitch neatly around the outside either with machine or by hand. I do recall who contributed this tip, it was Miriam in Israel. I suggest that you or your DH contact Freeserve. Good advice. Several other lists I'm on have big problems with ISPs banning list mail addresses because the same mail is going to many of their customers. Most of them sort it out and it stays sorted. However a US ISP called Comcast is a persistent offender; they seem unable to keep email lists out of their spam filters for more than a few hours at a time. There's a commercial connection between Earthlink and Comcast to do with internet via cable, not sure of the details. If the people Jean's husband is trying to email are customers of that, then I suspect Freeserve won't be able to get the problem fixed, no matter what they do. Re: [lace-chat] Re: Genealogy Question - Medals
Hell Helen If I'd taken notes at last month's Kent FHS meeting when the talk was about military medals I'd have all the answers for you! I have very little in the way of military ancestors but I was pleasantly surprised at how interesting I found the talk. I do remember the speaker saying that another set of records, concerned with medals, is becoming available at The National Archives (Kew) but as yet only the first few surnames, alphabetically, are on-line. A couple of websites that might help are: http://www.roll-of-honour.com/FamilyHistoryResearch.html http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/medals.asp#originals Or Google military cross Brenda I live in Canada now but my family roots are firmly placed in England (and nearly all in East Anglia) so it is English sites I need information on. I have tried Ancestry.co.uk but their information is currently limited to those with surnames beginning with A or B (and I am looking for Randall in this case) and I am not sure just what they will have when the rest is released - I tried looking for some other relatives who I know were in WWI (Braybrookes - some survived, some didn't) and there was nothing for any of them. I'm still hoping that people on this list will have the magic answer (and the list is really quiet) so here is the original question: Do any of you genealogy whizzkids know where I can find any information about military medals? My great uncle apparently won the Military Cross at some point but no-one in the family seems to know more than that. He was born in 1891 so my guess would be the medal was awarded during WWI but it could have been some other time I suppose. Any websites that might be useful? [lace-chat] Silly Humor
A new to me version of a very old joke Blind Clerk at Wal-Mart A woman goes into Wal-Mart to buy a rod and reel for her grandson'sbirthday. She doesn't know which one to get so she just grabs one and goes over to the counter. A Wal-Mart associate is standing there wearing dark shades. She says, Excuse me, sir. Can you tell me anything about this rod and reel? He says, Ma'am, I'm completely blind but if you'll drop it on the counter, I can tell you everything you need to know about it from the sound it makes. She doesn't believe him but drops it on the counter anyway. He says, That's a six-foot Shakespeare graphite rod with a Zebco 404 reel and 10-LB. Test line. It's a good all around combination... and it's on sale this week for only $20.00. She says, It's amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound of it dropping on the counter. I'll take it! As she opens her purse, her credit card drops on the floor. Oh, that sounds like a Master Card, he says. She bends down to pick it up and accidentally breaks wind. At first she is really embarrassed, but then realizes there is no way the blind clerk could tell it was she who tooted. Being blind he wouldn't know that she was the only person around. The man rings up the sale and says, That'll be $34.50 please. The woman is totally confused by this and asks, Didn't you tell me it was on sale for $20.00? How did you get $34.50? He replies, Yes, Ma'am. The rod and reel is $20.00, but the Duck Call is $11.00 and the Catfish Bait is $3.50. Best Regards, Carol Melton Valley of the Sun where it rained today! More for tomorrow. [lace-chat] The Straggly Cat - more risque humor
There is getting even, and then there is gettin' EVEN! :) The Straggly Cat One December day we found an old straggly cat at our door. She was a sorry sight. Starving, dirty, smelled terrible, skinny and hair all matted down. We felt sorry for her, put her in a carrier and took her to the vet. We didn't know what to call her, so we named her Pussycat. The vet decided to keep her for a day or so. He said he would let us know when we could come and get her. My husband (the complainer) said, OK, but don't forget to wash her.she stinks. He reminded the vet that it was his WIFE (me) that wanted the dirty cat, not him. (My husband and my Vet don't see eye to eye.) The vet calls my husband 'El-Cheap-O', and my husband calls the vet 'El-Charge-O'. They love to hate each other and constantly 'snipe' at one another, with my husband getting in the last word on this particular occasion. The next day my husband had an appointment with his doctor, who is located in the same building, next door to the vet. The MD's waiting room was full of people waiting to see the doctor. A side door opened and the vet leaned in - he had obviously seen my husband arrive. He looked straight at my husband and in a loud voice said, Your wife's pussy doesn't stink anymore and it's finally clean and shaved, so she now smells like a rose. Oh, and, by the way, I think she's pregnant. God only knows who the father is! Then he closed the door. Now THAT, my friends, is getting even !!
