Hi All,

Think about Scouting authorities (in London area somewhere) who have a
Centenary World Jamboree about to start (28th July) and they have 500,000
people coming!!

[lace] Seven Competition and Exhibition

2007-07-24 Thread Jean Leader
We're now back from holiday and have posted the list of Award and
Medal winners for the Seven competition on the Lace Guild website
(URL in the signature). We'll be adding a gallery of pictures in the
next week or so.

You'll also find details of the Exhibition catalogue which has a
complete list of everyone who entered, the title of each piece and a
brief description of how it relates to the theme of 'Seven'. It also
includes 20 coloured illustrations of a selection of entries.

From the official web site:

As floods hit most of the UK, Chelmsford remains unaffected by the flooding,
Essex is probably the driest county in the UK and despite a few showers and
muddy patches the build is continuing!

2007-07-24 Thread Annette Meldrum
Dear all,

I have summarized all your responses for my friend, and she is very
grateful.

At least she will be better prepared when next faced with such an accident
and will think twice about decorating the table with unprotected heirloom
lace.

Many thanks for all your valued contributions. You are a great and
knowledgeable bunch of people.

I'm in the north of Kent - just across the River Thames from Essex, and
we've not had abnormally high levels of rainfall. Yes it's been very
wet, but nothing really unusual. Because last year was so dry the
ground is still able to soak up water. Terry is still walking the dogs
across the marshes wearing shoes/trainers rather than wellie boots.

After a really grey and wet day yesterday, today is beautiful, a blue
sky with puffy white clouds, a gentle breeze and around 22 deg C.

Re: [lace] flooding in England,

2007-07-24 Thread Carol Adkinson

Hi All,

We have had my parents staying with us for a few days,a nd they wandered off
to one of their favourite places on Sunday afternoon - they went to Altonm
Water, a reservoir just outside Ipswich, in Suffolk, and said they had never
seen so many tents being erected, rows of toilets, and all sorts of other
marquees. They said it was to do with a Scouting event of some
description, so I wonder if this is it - or whether the event at Alton Water
is a sort of 'over-spill' to the main event? We are about a two-hour
drive from London, but thankfully, we are supposedly in one of the driest
areas of GB - although we have had far more than our share of rainfall this
summer, we have not been flooded, and the reservoir is picturesque - and
large - in the extreme. So - I do hope all the scouting fraternity will
enjoy themselves, and thank God tthat we are relatively unscathed with the
awful flooding.

Dear Lacemakers

I'm pleased to tell you all that Edition 4 is almost ready for
printing. I've been speaking with the printer today; the price hasn't
increased hugely despite an extra 200 threads and subject to no
unforseen mishaps it should be ready in about 3 weeks time. Just one
more evening for me to spend proofreading!

Re: [lace] IOLI Membership Message

2007-07-24 Thread Kate Henry

Dear Laurie,
ooops. I sent my renewal through Paypal as well. I'll bet you get quite a
few this way If this method isn't working for the membership committee,
there is the option to send refund through Paypal for a good month or so
without penalty. I added all the info from the membership form to the
comments section. I hope it works out to be convenient. Its very easy and
instant for Paypal users. It looks like lacemakers are all Eager Beavers and
Overachievers no holding us back when we find a shortcut.

Well I just paid my dues via paypal, the account was there and the money
withdrawn. I don't think I can call it back. I put my member number and
name in the comments section.

They're going to get a crash course in this, I'm afraid. The feature is
there, maybe they just weren't going to use it yet.

2007-07-24 Thread Malvary J Cole
It is quite ok to send your renewal through Paypal - I did mine and sister
Jacquie's this morning. I had e-mailed Laurie first a few days ago just to
make sure and got the confirmation back. I thought I had done it that way
last year (and I had).

You just complete the membership form and then e-mail that to Laurie then go
into Paypal to send the appropriate amount and put
[EMAIL PROTECTED] into the space provided. I put our
membership numbers into the comments space because they were renewals.

My guess about the technique would be Brugge/Duchesse, which doesn't
necessarily mean that it was made in Brugge; there are a lot of lace
pictures made by American Indians (late XIXth-early XXth c), which
share many characteristics with yours.

BTW, I agree with whoever-it-was (my wretched memory won't let me
recall the name) who said it was not a dragon but a Salamander. The
fire/rebirth idea is not limited to phoenix and salamander's
mythological affinity to fire has a long tradition, especially in the
Christian imagery (that fiery cluster is also reminiscent of Christ's
heart in many paintings I'd seen in Poland). Besides... Most dragons
have wings, and this critter doesn't :)

For me, that would have been THE selling factor (I get to see deer,
blue jays, woodpeckers and all sorts of other critters, without ever
leaving my own kitchen, with its lace pillow and easy access to the
electric kettle for my tea-making g). I tend to think of myself as
not being much into workshop homework but have noticed that, wherever
there's an option of working past the normal hours (I am *definitely*
not someone likely to show up *before* the normal hours g), I tend
to grab it and get much more done as the result. I just don't like to
haul all my equipment back and forth between the room and the classroom
and don't like to work in the room (cramped, bad light, et al).

VBG Once-a-year, always-same-date renewal is what IOLI *used to*
have; they switched to the 4-times-a-year (magazine rather than
guild-membership style) only a year or so ago. With the
guild-membership type of subscription, if you happen to join the
organization close to the end of its subscription year, you get 4
issues, of which 3 are way out of date and may not be of interest. And,
to rub the salt into the wounds... as soon as you get your first
*current* issue, you also get a renewal slip for the new year. At which
point, you may be so disenchanted with the scam, you toss the renewal
form into the nearest trash can (or into your paper-recycle bag).

Most of the IOLI old timers still have their renewal date at the same
time as they've always had it -- June/August. But the new arrivals
vary; their subscription starts with the nearest *current* issue.
