[lace] The Lacemaker's Story: Loughborough Luddites and Long Journeys

2007-11-14 Thread Linda Walton

Dear Lacemakers,

By accident, I came across this notice about the exhibition in my title,
which I thought might interest some of you. The website where I found
the details was the 24 hour museum one,

http://www.24hourmuseum.org.uk
and here is the link to the exhibition details,
http://www.24hourmuseum.org.uk/leicester/events/EDR51086.html?ixsid=RlsfY1Ba1Wi
but as I'm not sure if that will work directly for you, I've copied them
below.

Best wishes to all my lacemaking friends on this list! I've missed you,
but I'm in the third year of my course now, and just daren't stop to
read messages - or even make any lace, although the siren-call of my
pillow is getting ever louder.

Linda Walton, in a very chilly High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, U.K.

Hi Linda and everyone

Nice to see this exhibit mentioned again.
The volunteers at Charnwood Museum who developed the display have published
a really nice booklet to go along with it (thanks to Jane Partridge for the
lead!), worth getting even if one cannot visit the exhibit.
The exhibit will be shown elsewhere, after its current installation - at
Donington-le-Heath Manor House and then 'The Record Office' (UK locations,
and I don't know exact addresses) through April 2008.
I could not find immediately a link to where the booklet can be purchased. I
bought my copy direct from a volunteer; if anyone is interested please
contact me privately that I can pass along their contact details

[lace] Camarinas Annual Exhibition

2007-11-14 Thread Carolina de la Guardia

Hello spiders,

Some time ago someone, sorry I am not sure if it was Karen from Malta,
asked about the Annual Exhibition in Camariñas (Spain).
I have been so late in replying because until now, I have not been
informed that The Mostra do Encaixe Galego de Camariñas will take
place next 19th. to 23th. March 2008.

So, all is going on.

Regards.

Re: [lace] Needle-lace blog

2007-11-14 Thread Lenore English
I cut my little leaf from the working base, and have updated my blog
with a picture. I can see room for improvement, but I am pleased it
stayed in one piece when I removed my couching. I have enjoyed
working my first piece of needle lace so much I've already started
another. It's a little ornament for the ornament exchange of our lace
group.

Once again I have to thank Aurelia for putting these lessons on her
blog. I never thought to try needle lace, and now my mind is reeling
with possibilities.

[lace] italian to english translation assistance needed

2007-11-14 Thread dnichols
I know something like this was discussed previously. Apologies to those who are
not interested, please delete this message at this point.

I am working on trying to read some Italian lace and embroidery books. I
thought I saw mention of a place where some common terms had been listed with
their english equivalents. Can someone point me in the right direction? I
seem to have misplaced the previous email.

The current article I am looking at is in Rakam, an issue from last year.

Please reply privately, off list.

Thanks,
Dianne

RE: [lace] Needle-lace blog

2007-11-14 Thread Angel Skubic
Oh I am S excited myself...I am going to do the leaf and I went to
that site for that Dillmont book and found whole lots of other books and
leaflets etc to help me learn stitches etc. I am going to try to make a
sampler out of the Plate VIII in Dilmont's Needle Point Lace book. That
way I can try all the different stitches. I also want to try to do it
with the stitches currently in place. I think I am going to really like
this. Something that I can actually carry with me to work on. The
Dillmont book was a great pattern book but there are a couple of others
that are more how too books. Anyway...busy busy busy trying to learn.
Love that I already have most of the stuff I need being I do bobbin
lace, tat, crochet etc...Going to use color in this so I can see what I
am doing from row to row...

Wish me luck...thanks for the inspiration...

[lace-chat] For the cat lovers out there

2007-11-14 Thread Jean Nathan
Here's a nice little story about a cat in Dorset. The car arriving at the
collection point and the cat getting into the car and being driven home was
shown on local TV last night. The cat's owner has 5 cats and two dogs, but
this is the only one which behaves like this.

[lace-chat] :) Fwd: pay raise

2007-11-14 Thread Tamara P Duvall

From: R.P.

The Maid asked for a raise. The Madam was very upset about this and
asked: Now Maria, why do you want an increase?

Maria: Well Madam, there are three reasons why I want an increase.
The first is that I iron better than you.
Madam: Who said you iron better than me?
Maria: The Master said so.
Madam: Oh.

Maria: The second reason is that I am a better cook than you.
Madam: Nonsense, who said you were a better cook than I?
Maria: The Master did.
Madam: Oh.

Maria: My third reason is that I am a better lover than you.
Madam (very upset now): Did the Master say so as well?
Maria: No Madam, the gardener did.

SHE GOT THE PAY RAISE!

[lace-chat] :) Fwd: Philosophical Jokes

2007-11-14 Thread Tamara P Duvall

Must say I think the first one is the best :)

From: R.P.

Aristotle, Plato and Descartes are on a plane. The flight attendant
comes by to take their drink orders. She asks Aristotle if he'd
like a beverage. Aristotle says, I'll have a ginger ale.

And how about you, Mr. Plato?

Plato says Diet Coke, please.

She says, and Mr. Descartes, anything to drink for you?

Descartes says, I think not, and disappears.

A man is praying to God. Lord, he prays, is it true that to
you, a million years is but a second?

Yes, the Lord says, that is true.

Well, then, what is a million dollars to you?

A million dollars to me is but a penny.

Ah, then, Lord, says the man. May I have a penny?

Sure, says the Lord. Just a second.

An angel appears to the head of a Philosophy Department and says,
I'll grant you whichever of three blessings you choose. Wisdom,
beauty, or ten million dollars.

Immediately, the professor chooses wisdom. There is a flash of
lightning, the professor is transformed, but then he just sits there,
staring down at the table.

One of his colleagues whispers, You have great wisdom. Say
something! The professor says, I should have taken the money!
