[lace] Lace makers census
Don't forget the lace makers of Portugal, there are two fishing villages (well small towns actually) Peniche and Vila de Conde, where lace is made and is still taught. Peniche has an annual festival for the lace (in July) when every lace maker there, sits in the main square making lace, there is also a competion for the best contempory piece of lace and also for a traditional piece. So perhaps two thousand lace makers in Portugal. Re: [lace] Lace makers census
In South Africa there is probably no more than 500 lacemakers and that is aiming very high! So I find it difficult to believe Canada has only 500. We do not even have a national organisation. Re: [lace] Lace makers census
Neither do we in Canada have a national organisation. A national magazine in English is privately run. Canada is a huge country geographically but not heavily populated and especially not with lacemakers :p I believe there about the same number of French-Canadian lacemakers in the province of Quebec as there are in all of English Canada. Canada is the home of the longest living lace group, since 1919, the Denman District Lace Club has been meeting regularly, begun by an English woman who was visiting the area on Vancouver Island. At one time the group was quite large. I think there are about 20 active lacemakers in that group now (perhaps one of them if she is reading this will confirm). My conservative guess is 500 lacemakers, call it 1000 for Miriam's census ;) On Sun, Feb 24, 2008 at 8:16 AM, Jeanette Fischer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: In South Africa there is probably no more than 500 lacemakers and that is aiming very high! [lace] lacemakers helper - table mate
Hi everyone, highlight to those in Canada I have a lacemaker's table, put away - I prefer the TableMate II and the knockoff I bought at Field's for half the price. There is one in each room where I like to make lace :) One of them plus my pillow can be carried in my Ikea tote bag to a lace meeting, and I can adjust the table to suit whatever chair is available. The bag itself is a great helper, too - it is a sturdy, plain reinforced woven plastic bag meant to store car tires - inexpensive, model name Dimpa. Canadian Tire has a 'Tilt-a-Table' for $16.99 in their latest flyer, which looks a lot like the Table Mate. On until the 28th if anyone wants to investigate. -- Bev (in Shirley near Sooke, BC on beautiful Vancouver Island, west coast of Canada) - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace] nice and educative responses to young lacemakers video
Hi all and especially those who responded to the video, Daan and Alicia were thrilled by all the nice responses to the video of their swinging lacemaking! Carol Adkinson has made them honorary members of her children lace classes and I can tell you that my grandkids feel honored. They really feel like VIP's! The responses were also educative. Daan told a friend about his lacemaking and his friend said; lacemaking, that is girl's stuff. So Daan told him that he knew boys, some even as old as 16 (he was talking about Carol's grandsons!), who also make lace. And that his grandma has male lacefriends, MEN! He knew that, thanks to the emails that Mark and David sent. For his next show and tell, he will take his pillow to school and tell his whole class about lacemaking! Again, thank you for your nice responses. It is very stimulating for my young lacemakers. Anneke Reijs in Baexem, South East of The Netherlands P.S. [lace] Lacemaking in 'Larkrise to Candleford'
Opening sequence in this evening's episode showed Queenie sitting under a tree, making bobbin lace on a rather flattened bolster pillow. Too quick to take in just what she was making, or the type of bobbins. There didn't seem to be many bobbins, but it did look as if she was actually making lace. If anyone's videoed it, perhaps they can give a more accurate description. [lace] Lacemaker in Larkrise
Just found details of a book - 'Flora Thompson - The Story of the Lark Rise' llustrations are listed, including Old Queenie, the beewoman and lacemaker, 1880. I wonder if beekeeping and lacemaking went hand-in-hand at that time? RE: [lace] Census
There are bobbin and tatting lace books published purely in Japanese - I have a beauty, ISBN 4-579-10822-1, brought back from Japan by a friend, and she has several others. And a Google search of bobbin lace Japan and go to the end of the list for all Japanese script sites will bring up some of the most startlingly beautiful lace. So there's got to be a fair few lacemakers there. Do you count the sweatshop Chinese lacemakers in such a census too? Noelene in Cooma, Australia [EMAIL PROTECTED] What about Japan? So there's got to be a fair few lacemakers there. Dear Census takers, When I went to OIDFA in Lund Sweden, there were many Japanese lacemakers in attendance. Perhaps they were planning OIDFA 2010 that far in advance! Anyway, I found this so interesting that I counted the number there from each country. I found there were as many Japanese lacemakers as lacemakers from the UK, where the next OIDFA (Nottingham) Congress was to be held. The Japanese lacemakers have exhibited beautiful laces at all recent OIDFA Congresses I've attended. Further, one recent year they were the featured lacemakers at the annual meeting of Hungarian lacemakers in Kiskunhalas. So, think about what I found on a casual basis, combine that with the fact OIDFA 2010 will be in Japan, and guess/estimate. Re: [lace] Lacemaking in 'Larkrise to Candleford'
Everything looks fairly correct except maybe the pincushion - too modern looking. The pillow is what I'd call a plum pudding shape, not a bolster, and is typical of the East Midlands. The bobbins are spangled bone East Midlands type. Queenie seems to be working a narrow edging, though its impossible to tell what lace type, there appears to be sufficient bobbins for the job. [lace] Ipswich Lace ( UK USA)
Dear Katrina, I'm sorry that you were disappointed to find that the Ipswich lace of my message was from Ipswich, USA. Add to that the fact that I really wasn't referring to what we Americans call Ipswich Lace, but rather to the lace that is currently housed at the museums operated by the Ipswich Historical Society. The laces in these collections is of a huge variety, and were donated over a period of time by people who were aware of the connection of the town of Ipswich (Massachusetts) to the 18th-early 19th c. lace industry here in New England. As an aside, I would like to mention the beautiful exhibit of embroidery that was made in the town of Ipswich (UK) and on display this summer in Ipswich (USA). It was a very impressive display of skill and talent, in addition to being a lot of fun in learning more about **your** Ipswich. I live about fifty miles from Ipswich (MA, USA), but feel privileged to be so close to a historical lacemaking center. In answer to your very informative answer I was pleased to hear the background of 'Ipswich Lace' and will certainly find the books mentioned to obtain further information. It was just that for a moment when reading Ipswich Lace I thought of the town I live in where there are several lacemakers today. But it is wonderful to hear the history and to dip into the background of something we love so much. Re: [lace] lacemakers helper - another budget pillow tote
Hi again Speaking of pillow storage - yes about the wreath boxes, they were advertised at Canadian Tire, too, just around Christmas then I missed the sale - I like fabric totes with handles too, to hang on a sturdy coat-hanger in a closet. The plastic wreath box, ideal for a complicated work in progress that needs to be put away and kept flat. Fields sells their store shopping bag for 99 cents. It opens wide and is roomy for 18-inch cookie pillows, a real bargain if one doesn't mind that the only colour choice is black and the store name in bold red (I look at it and think somehow it could be tweeked to read 'Laces' ). The handles are a generous length.
