[lace] needlelace

2009-02-08 Thread Catherine Barley
Hi Liz

I need to use gold thread in Needlelace - for the cordonette around the

edge, and maybe(Probably) for some couronnes (the little fancy rings

that are stab stitched on afterwards.)

I have successfully used Madeira FS2/3 No 15 gold/silver metallic thread. I
split the threads and used one strand only. If you are using a metallic
thread for your cordonnet, wax your couching thread before use (the cotton
thread that you are using to couch down the metallic thread with), this will
help prevent wear of the sewing thread against the metallic thread. Use a
slightly larger ball point needle than you would normally use for the
metallic thread, as this will make a larger hole for the thread to pass
through and prevent wear when working the stitches. There is of course, a
tendency for the thread to keep coming out of the eye of the needle, so tie
it just once.

You may recall the little chatelaine that I took to Australia in 2007? The
motif on the scissors case was worked in the Madeira gold metallic thread,
filling stitches and all. It is not the easiest of threads to work with but
well worth the effort. You would of course have to use shorter lengths of
this thread but I am sure you already know that. Good luck with your
project.

I just don't know how you can stitch in temperatures of 40 degrees! Here in
the UK we have had a week of heavy snowfalls, schools closed etc. and
everything coming to a grinding halt but it's a perfect excuse to stay
indoors and stitch.

Best wishes

I hope that none of our friends 'down under' have been caught in the
current bush fires raging in Victoria and S.Australia. Maybe one of
them might be able to tell us about the situation.
Here in Sawbridgeworth we, at the moment, have missed the worse of the
snow, as we do the flooding when it rains. We count ourselves very
lucky that slight differences in height have such effect.

As Cath Barley says a good excuse to make lace.

winter is play time where everybody spends as much time outdoors as
possible, and summertime is when we mostly (if we're not at the swimming
pool) stay indoors with the air conditioning and fans and move as little
as possible. Next week, we're driving to L.A. (Costa Mesa, California)
for the Winter Lace Conference for four days of lace workshops. I'll be
working on Lester lace with Holly Van Sciver and I'm really looking

2009-02-08 Thread Agnes Boddington

Hi all

Finally finished my Beds butterfly. I started it last May on a course
with Christine Springett.
It has 6 rolled tallies, she did the first one to show me how to do
them, and then I struggled with the other five.
Each time I came to THAT point, I put the pillow away, and did something
easier on another pillow.
Anyway, I bit the bullet and by the time I came to the last one it just
worked.

I am quite proud of it, even though it is not perfect, and I have
uploaded a photo on Arachne as Sue Duckles

told me to do.
I also uploaded a photo of a 15cm diameter mat i did about 12 years ago,
when I had my first bout of lace making.
I went to a mixed needlecraft class, where there was one other person
who wanted to learn bobbin lace.
The class folded after 10 weeks, and I struggled on by myself,
eventually abandoning lace altogether as work and
family took up my time. When I took up the bobbins again about 2 years
ago, I found I had to start from scratch

again, and also that my fingers are a lot stiffer now.

Anyway, if you want to have a look, go to the Arachen webshots album.
Photos listed under my name.
B.t.w. Sue, I hope you can sleep peacefully in the knowledge that do as

2009-02-08 Thread Deborah Lane
Sadly there are now 84 confirmed deaths and 750 homes lost. I know of at
least one town and hear that more are wiped from the map. The death toll is
expected to exceed 100 by tomorrow. It is the worst bushfire in our
recorded history. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=744864 I was in
the Canberra fires of 2003 and came through ok.

There are also bush fires In New South Wales and Victoria. We are all
praying for a cool change and rain, lots of rain in the fire effected areas.

We have also had a heatwave through mostly Adelaide and Melbourne but
Canberra and most of south east Australia have coped it too. At last report
Adelaide had 60 deaths attributed to the heat wave. Add to all of this that
Australian is in the grip of one of the worst droughts to date, and we are
the dryest inhabited continent on the planet to start with. WOW, feeling
kinda screwed at the moment.

In the north of the country, northern Queensland they are experiencing
terential rains and flooding, the worst in their recorded history was one
report.

If you want to offer financial assistance the Red Cross Australia are set up
to take donations. I world financial crisis just become a lot harder for
some.

Hug your families tonight. Think of those who will never be able to do that
again. And if you are so inclined, pray to which ever deity you hold dear
for those who have passed and those who are left to morn.

If you want to know more go to http://news.ninemsn.com.au/headlines/

Hello Again! I am writing to ask for counseling on Ruskin lace. A friend
registered for an EGA RL class (seminar this fall) but it was over-booked she

including the Lace Guild booklet. Also, am I wrong in seeing a four-sided
stitch similarity with Casalguidi? The E. Prickett site has lots of examples,
so am I correct in thinking that it is the arrangement placement of motifs
that sets Ruskin apart from other types of needlelace? As well as having been
invented at a much later date than other types? Will someone enlighten me?
Many thanks. Susan, Erie, PA

To the best of my knowledge, Ruskin lace and Casalguidi are revivals
of drawn thread work (the work that gave birth to punto in aria, the
first true needle lace being without a fabric foundation). As such,
the authors of the revivals may have emphasized certain aspects more
than others or developed certain stylistic interpretations but it is
all the same type of drawn work, embroidery, and needleweaving techniques.

[lace] Lace machines

2009-02-08 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
That was an interesting message about the Barman lace machines.

Some years ago the Victorian Branch of the Oz., Lace Guild took a group of us
to a Lace Manufacturey. We were the first ever group to be shown through the
factory, so they did not know quite how to deal with us!! It was SO
interesting.
They showed us some old sample books, and then how the cards are punched, and
then how the machines work. It was fascinating to see the spools of thread
dancing around , and then the lace appearing up the centre of the circular
machine.

The other part of the factory was devoted to making elastic - wide stuff for
shoes, and then the Undies elastic, - with brand names woven into the
elastic.

It was a fascinating visit, - and we were given a short length of lace each
with a written page when we left. (which I still have!)

*
**

Hooray - the Postie has just arrived - and there are 2 Lace magazines for me -
The Lace Guild and the Guild of Needle
Laces. Good.!Some interesting bedtime reading to cheer me a bit, as we
are devastated with the terrible bush fires that are burning thoughout the
State. So many deaths (110 the latest toll), It is Unbelievable.

hallo mrs Isabel,

why do you say that?
i m intrigued now because you are the first of a long list sayning this
i must admit that mostly i do not use needles but i use a computerised
industrial machine

but now and then i do a bit of sampling on the classic way
it is very fast for looking for colour matshing and effects of fantasy
threads

the reason i was looking for wooden knitting needles is that I have now
a pear of german ebony

needles and they feel so njammy to work in
it is like you are not carrying those needles
hard to explain in a foreign language
but I feel like a knitting princes altough i am a knitting farmer
i think that after some soulsearshing i can say that it is to put away
the feel of the industrial side of my activitys

metal and industry versus wood and nature

so that is way i was looking if there are other wood needles on the market
and apperently there are a lot but .. a lot of differend ones
differend touches, differnd woods and grains
If i look to the metal ones I used to work in:
Like the prym metal needels and other similar ones
i sometimes have the feel that they are to heavy
and not pleasant enough in my hands
they feel cold and clinical death
it is again between the ears ofcourse but.

Bart always looks to those matters in an other way
he says it is a kind of snobisme
i do not agree

but if you have a real reason and not emotional ones like i have.
i am one and all ears
and i forgat to mention that the tik tak noise of the woods are like the
risling of willows in the wind

and the metal kling klang tsching, well it bothers me

Dear Francis and others, Many years ago I took a lace knitting class with
Diane Willet at an IOLI Convention. With diabetic neuropathy bothering
my hands and fingers, I was dropping stitiches easily. Diane, who is a

gentle, so...that is the initial reason I started using wooden knitting
needles. Now with rheumatoid arthritis affecting the joints in my hands,
I already have my wooden knitting needles! I have all sizes, many
