[lace] Piecework Brooch Competition
I received my copy of Piecework this morning it was good to see that there were quite a few entries that came under the lace category. If you go to: http://www.interweave.com/needle/NWOY/pastwinners/winners_2009.asp you can see the 4 pages from the magazine showing the winning entries a selection of the best brooches. [lace] Lace in Germany?
Hi all, Coming out of lurkdom to ask about lace in Germany. As a group we are planning to go to the Tonder Lace Festival next June in Denmark, but as we want to make it a holiday for about 6-7 days we are looking for some other places to visit. We are planning to stay in Northern Germany and nip over the border to Tonder on the 4 - 6 June, so do any of you have places that you could recommend that we visit. We'll have a coach to hand so can travel a reasonable distance. Lace in museums, spectacular scenery and shopping :-))) a lace group meeting? The thought of the Tonder lace festival is really so exciting, something to look forward to with great anticipation. Re: [lace] Lace @ Sweet Briar
I was going to write a report on lace at Sweet Briar first thing this morning, but Betty Ann has beaten me to it, with a very full description. Other highlights for me, included being in a class with Betty Ann and enjoying her sense of humour - along with those of our class mates. I suspect we might have laughed more than the other classes! Everyone was so welcoming, and there was always someone to join at meal times. We were in Bobbi Donnelly's great Tønder class. Bobbi had produced a wonderful, structured folder of patterns for each of us, so that we could progress through the various techniques used in Tønder. I have come back with a lovely collection of patterns to work, which will keep me busy for a very long time! I enjoyed the week so much. It was lovely not to need to get into a car for the whole week. There were walking paths, a swimming pool and gym, and even live theatre on site. I suspect that if one was a horse rider that that would also be a possibility! Thursday afternoon's treat was incredible - chocolate-coated Key Lime pie on a stick. Delicious! I'm going to have to find a recipe for that! Roll on Sweet Briar 2010! Sue Babbs - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Lace in Germany?
Hello Jenny, if you want to see laces in Germany you must start in the south in Abenberg. There is a museum with lace. Next would be the Erzgebirge Schneeberg, Annaberg and Schwarzenberg. In Brauschweig in the art museum was some years ago, if it is still so I don't know, one small room with laces from a famous German collector. In the north in Hamburg in the Museum fpr the applied Art in German Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe all laces are in the depot. You can make an appointment, at least 2 or 3 months in advance, and it cost round about 60 Euro. For a group it would be payable for a single person it's much. In Flensburg in the museum you find a little bit lace. In Dortmund, western part of Germany, are also some laces to see but most of them behind the open space. If you want I can look for the adresses. And if you are a member of Laceguild you find in the last issue an article about Erzgebirge. Hope this helps a bit. Re: [lace] Dillmont dating
Hi Liz, As I see that you are gathering info from other countries too... here is mine from a Spanish version of the book: It has the number 631, and the copyright for this Spanish edition is from 1975. It also says 1,335,000 copies published, and has 832 pages plus index and coloured pictures of laces, and some history of DMC. I have bought it a few years ago. It measures 23,5 x 15,5 cm. I like this thread. Really interesting. And the book is beautiful. But... has anyone tried to learn how to make bobbin lace following the instructions of this book? Well, I haven't. But it seems quite difficult to me. Diagrams are a great help nowadays! [lace] Dating Therese de Dilmont
My thanks to the many listers who replied to me both on and off list. I will be a few days updating my data base. There seem to be a lot of modern reprints. I have one which is so poor that the pictures have reproduced very badly. BUT I have a very early copy and hand-written on title page is Holmes, Windermere, 1895. I have used this to compare pictures with the reprint. I actually have five copies in all - two pocket ones, one larger English, one larger French and the modern reprint. What a wonderful book! I have referred to it for all sorts of things - even the dreaded Roseground ( well it was when I first started lace.) In fact, for about two years, every time I needed to do Roseground, out would come the little book. If you know the book, you will realise how difficult it is to follow in places - the pricking on one page, picture on another and word for word instructions elsewhere. I used to get my daughter to read out a line, then work the lace, then Anne would read another line and so on. Now it's time to get to the lace pillow. Once again, Many thanks And if anyone else wants to send any details please do. Re: [lace] Dillmont dating
Hi Everyone, My copy is an English pocket edition, 33/4 by 55/8inches (9.5cm x14cm). It has 928, so was published in September 1928. There were 1,120,00 copies issued, 811 pages before all the ads and the contents. Eve Poole, Dorset, UK Elizabeth Pass wrote: Hello Diana, If your book has the number 630, it was published in June 1930. Check that it also says 1,260,000 copies published and has 813 pages. It seems that many book sellers had their own business details on the cover. One of mine comes from WH Smith, the other has no further details on it. I've been collating these books for some years and so far have established that there were 18 editions in English covering the years 1895 (handwritten by the first owner) up to 1955. I've also got a modern reprint and I've details of 5 French editions and 2 German. If anyone has the Encyclopedia of Needlework by Th. de Dillmont and wants to send to send me the details, I'd like to know the number at the bottom on the reverse of the title page, the number of copies published and the number of pages as well as the size. There was a 'pocket' edition and another twice the size. If there are any other details such as the bookseller, I'd be interested in that too. Best wishes, Liz Pass In Poole, Dorset where the weather is humid and overcast but warm enough for me. -Original Message- From: owner-l...@arachne.com [mailto:owner-l...@arachne.com] On Behalf Of Diana Smith Sent: 28 June 2009 18:48 To: Arachne Subject: [lace] Dillmont dating I know there is a way of dating the Encyclopedia of Needlework by Th.de Dillmont by the number printed inside the book. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Lace in Germany?
The collection in the Braunschweig museum is apparently available again. If I'm not mistaken, Yvonne Scheele-Kerkhof was there last year and saw it. If it really is open, it's worth going to see, as it's a marvelous collection. Aurelia Baltimore, Maryland Hello Jenny, if you want to see laces in Germany you must start in the south in Abenberg. Re: [lace] Dating Therese de Dilmont
I have an old copy bought in a second hand bookshop in Dublin. The spine is fragile and the edges of the pages are discolored. The title page includes English edition All rights reserved There is no number on the title page or its verso which reads To be had of Th de Dillmont, Dornach, Alsace and at all booksellers, and embroidery shops Price, English found with gilt edges English edition Sh 3 - French editiion Fr. 3.75 German editiion Mk 3- The cover is green with a spray of leaves across the top and spine it measures 15.5 x 23.7 cm It has designs not in any later edition and I suspect it is one of the earlier versions. I was able to check another apparently identical copy in a library and it has no numbers either. The table of contents is right at the end of the book just before the last page with text which is 574. Just before this is a 4 page list of DMC products which includes Cordonnet 6 fils up to 200 guage. I saw a copy which was very similar if not identical in the Lace Centre at Kenmare in Ireland. It included an inscription by the nuns with a date, probably in the late 1880s. I would be good to have some dating. [lace] Using lace
Dear Arachnids I agree that lace was made to be cut into suitable lengths and used and I always advise that when it starts to wear that is time to preserve it so that future generations can enjoy and learn from it. Museums that get so precious about their lace that you cannot have sufficient light or even access to study it properly make me wonder if they have lost the plot. Surely we preserve lace so that it can be enjoyed and properly studied so that we can learn from it. Keeping it safe for the future until it eventually disintegrates without it ever being seen or properly studied does not make sense. (Sorry, I have a bee in my bonnet about that one.)
