Re: [lace] Lacemaking tool that boggles the mind
I have the book and there is nothing like it in there that I noticed on a quick flick through the pages. Some of this person's other listings, lace bobbins and netting tools, are referenced to Nerylla Tauton's book and the sewing box has the same phrase, see http://tinyurl.com/34b84z8 I think that it might refer to the bobble makers mentioned in the listing, did they mean the two rings hanging on the string/thread? No reference to bobble makers in the index of the book though. RE: [lace] Lacemaking tool that boggles the mind
I sent this yesterday but for some reason it didn't arrive. This is no lacemaking object. It's a child's puzzle. I bought one for my children many years ago but it was made of wood. The idea is that you have to get both beads together on the same part of the string. Oh yes, it can be done ( if you have an hour or two to spare.) I can't find it at the moment or I would scan it. However there is a similar one (not exactly the same). http://tinyurl.com/39grozn Liz Pass - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. I didn't see the original message arrive in my mailbox either. The first I knew of it was when I saw a response. I noticed that the original was sent to lace-digest (which I'm not signed up for). Is that what you replied to, Liz? Avital, is there some strange arrangement where messages sent to digest don't reach the rest of us? Re: [lace] Unreceived messages
There's no conscious decision or configuration not to send the messages sent to the digest. I admit that possibility never occurred to me. It's possible that that might be causing problems because the digest address is an alias. It's not a true address, so it's possible that majordomo, although it will post messages sent to the digest, won't send it out to the senders for some reason. I've mentioned in the past that it's a good idea to ALWAYS address Arachne mail to: lace@arachne.com and not some of the alternatives floating around (like l...@dont.panix.com or lace-dig...@arachne.com or lace-dig...@dont.panix.com). The main reason is that if you address your message to those addresses, it won't show up in the archives (http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com), since the free archiving service cannot be configured for multiple lists, which is what these are. So please put the correct address in your addressbooks. When you write a reply or new posting, take a second to delete the address, if it's one of the aliases, and fill in the correct address. Those of you who aren't getting copies of your messages, please try it and let me know (privately, please) whether that makes a difference. Re: [lace] Unreceived messages
Good point. I always tell people to check their spam filters, especially if they have helpful ISPs that do the filtering for them. Majordomo platforms are becoming rather rare for email lists, and a mailing list is bulk email, so sometimes it triggers a filter. I've had the same problem with aol. In fact, it reached the point where more Arachne messages were going into the Spam folder than into my New Messages one. [lace] books on demand?
Hello All! While standing in line at Barnes Noble, I overheard a conversation regarding books on demand. I'd never heard of this concept so asked the attendant. Apparently there are publishers who receive (paid in advance!) orders from BN, print the book send it to the store for pick up. What a novel idea! Except we're talking non-fiction G!! The gal in front of me paid for her book the store will call her when it is ready. Is this something that could be pursued with the fine folks at Batsford (or other publishers of lacemaking books)?? Sounds like a win/win solution to the OOP situation we are experiencing. Susan, in Erie - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] books on demand?
books on demand is also the name of company. I bought a couple of bobbin lace books from Barbara Fay that were from BOD. It is an economical way to publish small quantities, as for a niche market (such as lacemaking!). On Wed, Jun 2, 2010 at 10:32 AM, hottl...@neo.rr.com wrote: Hello All! hottl...@neo.rr.com wrote: Hello All! While standing in line at Barnes Noble, I overheard a conversation regarding books on demand. [snip] This has worked really well for some textbooks I've wanted. I've bought at least three on this scheme, (probably more, can't remember). The price can be a lot cheaper new than secondhand for books that are in demand. Of course, they are also clean and fresh - no folded corners, no notes in the margin, no highlighted sections. The only complaint I've had was one book that was only ever available in hardback: I got the hardback book, but not the outer paper cover that had a beautiful illustration, which I really wanted as well. [lace] Books on demand
I wonder if this is related to the Google books project to digitalize books that are out of print and unlikely to be reprinted. If someone orders an out of print lace book, and/or one of our authors on the list gets a royalty for such a reprint, it would be interesting to hear about it. So many lace books go in and out of print so quickly. I am assuming that the Barbara Fay books referred to were probably originally produced for Books on Demand which offers the opportunity to self publish without committing to an entire run. Very interesting. Devon - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. For help, write to arachnemodera...@yahoo.com

I would be careful of lulu. I heard how somehow they got a hold of a card and did unauthorized charges, but the person was unaware of the company and Visa had to pursue it with them.
