Brenda I thought I had taken along time. 8 years to make an Bucks point edging and 8 years to make a piece of Honiton for a tray. Congratulations on going back to a project after so long. [lace] Re: Wool Shrinkage Treatment
This intrigues me, as vinegar is used to set wool. For instance, a crease in a wool trouser can be removed with a 2:1 vinegar/water solution and an iron, and also a crease can be set, similarly. It tends to cut extraneous, but also pickle things, helping hold them in their existing state, but perhaps someone has a background in chemistry. The old cure (that I haven't tried myself) that most elderly people I know and have read stated many times elsewhere; is to place wool into boiling water and soak, then remove and pull into place/shape (with rubber gloves on, I assume), allowing it to gradually cool. It is temperature change that shocks wool, affecting the scales for shrinkage. People swear up and down it works, and is the only thing that works well. Nice to have information to rectify woolen things such as sweaters, but with lace objects, makes me cringe. Best, Susan Reishus HOW TO UNSHRINK A JUMPERâ Mix together 4 ½ litres of water. 1 cup ammonia. ¼ cup baking soda. 1 cup vinegar. Soak jumper, Pull into shape and leave in mixture 3-4 days. Rinse and wash with vinegar and ammonia. Soak as before. Rinse again. Lay flat to dry. Dear Friends, Now that many of you are looking at the pictures I thought you'd be interested to see the 75 words I wrote to accompany it and explain how it represented the Rhythm of My Life. Here's what a wrote.. A cross section of this scarf of Vietnamese silk represents my life. Circles on the side are ring-a-rosies of Primary School. Netting is the structured study of High School. Black is the Vietnam War. This is followed by 30 years of chaos in career change; Agent Orange; Cancer; Drug Addiction; pension claims. [lace] Sweet Briar 2011
Let me echo Liz in congratulating Clay Blackwell on another wonderful Lace at Sweet Briar. It was great fun, as always, with more potential hours of lacemaking than any other event that I attend. This year Clay engaged a masseuse to be available for chair massages of aching shoulders which proved to be quite popular. The opportunity for instruction, the conviviality of ones fellow lacemakers, shopping, and the beautiful surroundings, not to mention the flawless organization make this a truly delightful event. Hello Sue, nowadays a background of chemistry still it is specially about textile doesn't help much. Because nearly none textile piece is really natural. Also there is written inside pure wool or what ever there is always a certain amount other things in. On the other hand have you ever ironed a pure linen tablecloth. It#s hard work and looks always a bit crimpeling. Or do you remember how itchy trousers made from pure wool was. Every thing has two sides. And I too want to add my thanks to Clay, and all the teachers for making this a great event!! You can lace in the classrooms from early till late - just depends on your stamina!! The food, at the meals Clay organises in the Conference centre, is wonderful. What can beat salmon and / or beef and asparagus, followed by chocolate ganache cake? And even the food in the college dining room is inexpensive and good, with some great fresh, crisp vegetables in interesting combinations (not how I recall college meals at all!) [lace] Las Conchas fire
The Las Conchas fire started in the Jemez mountains at 1:00 on Sunday, and is a few miles away from Los Alamos where I live. Evacuations are voluntary at the time, but everyone is waiting for the winds to pick up this afternoon to see what will happen. I put up a photo on LaceNews that I took last night about 8:30. If we have to evacuate, me and my lace are out of here. About 44,000 acres have burned - if you know the area, the fire is now in Frijoles Canyon where Bandelier National Monument is. It's burning very hot - people could see flames hundreds of feet high from Santa Fe last night. Los Alamos National Lab is closed today, so I have the day off. This has happened before, in 2000 ten out of fourteen homes (mostly quads and duplexes) burned on my block. Mine survived. Hi Laurie I hope it does not get any worse, for you and all the other people in the area. I know it reasonably well, having toured it in the late 80's when we lived in California. For holidays we'd rent an RV and toured around quite a bit. Good luck, I'll keep my fingers crossed. [lace] Sweet Briar 2011 and Las Conchas fire
Ditto to the kudos for Clay and Lace at Sweet Briar. I really appreciated the time to concentrate on lace. I took Binche design with Anny Noben-Slegers and was glad I took it first at Sweet Briar rather than at an IOLI convention with the attendant distractions of banquets and lectures and tours. Perhaps my design bit off a bit more than I could chew, because I didn't at first realize what scale the grounds used in my design idea would cover. I was attempting a stylized Holy Family, figuring it could become a Christmas card image. The ground I had initially chosen for Mary's dress was too large to be effective with a line running through it for the curve of her arm, so several changes were made. I called my husband on Wednesday after class (it was our 37th anniversary; yes, he's a gem to encourage my lacemaking even with that conflict). At that point I still wasn't sure I was getting anywhere on the design or even really understanding the process. But Thursday and Friday things really started to click and I'm confident I'll be able to finish the design, though perhaps not soon enough for this year's card. I was particularly proud of a rather elegant compensation for the ground of Joseph's coat as it went through the curve of his arm near what would be his elbow. I figure slow and steady wins this race. When we flew home into Albuquerque yesterday afternoon, I noticed several KC-130 aircraft with big orange numbers on their tails at the base which shares the airport runway. These are the Air National Guard planes retrofitted for firefighting duty as slurry bombers. There were also several P-2s (the standard air slurry bombers) at the location where they get refilled with the slurry. When I exited the secure area, my husband was not there to greet me, he was 25 feet away at the window, checking out the planes moving through the slurry refilling area and taking off and heading north. As we headed north on the freeway, the Las Conchas fire was already filling the sky with smoke, four hours after it started. My husband hadn't noticed the new fire on his way down to the airport as it was behind him. We determined it was in the Jemez mountains a little southwest of Los Alamos and understood the danger to the a town that had previously been devastated by fire. And I thought of Laurie and her laces. We are tinder dry in New Mexico. Our house has received 0.46 inches of rain since January 1 (about 12 mm) and the Albuquerque airport half of that! So any spark has the possibility of erupting into a raging fire. I dread the Fourth of July coming up. And I'm encouraged to hear, as I write this, the sound of the slurry bombers coming back to load up for another attack on the Las Conchas fire. [lace] Re: Wool Shrinkage Treatment
I have to correct the ingredients, they are: 2:1, water to vinegar (though work in any close approximation). My caffeine to Susan ratio wasn't quite right when I posted it. I will add that my grandmother was a tailor and seamstress and taught me this, demonstrating the magic. Of note (in case one does not know already), that a pressing cloth should be used. Not digressing totally, as this info. is to be applied to rectifying wool, as in lace knitting, it would be used in the form of steam without pressing, to help set or create memory in a garment (similar to how you train your hair when styling it, to repeatedly behave a certain way). When the kids were growing up, they knew not to really talk to me about substantive matters until my coffee was done. At that time it was 4 cups, made in the coffee maker hooked to a timer set to go off 15 minutes before I was scheduled to wake up. The common question was, Have I had my coffee? No, then the answer will have to wait. Now that they are gone, I am down to a large mug. Heavy on the milk. That's as low as I'm willing to go. After that, I switch to tea.
