[lace] On-going lace
And then there is the lace that I made back in 1990, stitched to a dress I made for my then two year old daughter, she wore that dress till she was 10 needless to say I'd turned the hem down twice and added a flounce in the meantime.. but the dress and lace are still going strong, as good as they were to start with and I lost count how many times that went into the machine! I used Sylko - ordinary cotton sewing thread - to make the lace. Hi Help! Does anyone know of a website showing continental lace made slowly enough that I could copy the movements? [lace] Re: Las Conchas fire ( Los Alamos), etc.
Not only a threat to individuals in the area, but because it hosts a large nuclear testing facility, roughly 36 sq. mi., the damage can be far reaching via the atmosphere. The potential plutonium release (one atom in the lungs will create cancer), and some waste storage is in fabric type shrouded facilities. Sorry to go off topic and embellish prior comments, but our prayers go to all those in the area. In North Dakota, homes are standing in water to the rafters in the worst flood since the 1800's, and other states such as Texas, have the worst drought in years. Perhaps a good meditation/mantra/prayer while one is making lace, as thoughts are things. lace...stitched to a dress...wore (years)...turned the hem down twice and added a flounce...lace...going strong...lost count how many times (put in) washing machine... Reminds me of a woman whose grandmother would crochet a band of lace the approximate upper chest measurement for a child and it hosted summer nightgowns for years as all one had to do was lengthen (I would make deep tucks near the hem and release it), as children don't grow much in girth for a number of years, only height. The next generation inherited the loved lace band with new fabric replacing the body, and it has lived through 3-4 generations. I can't remember if she had lace straps, or used ribbon or fabric straps for the shoulder ties. Suitable for a woman's summer nightgown also...perhaps pillowcase lace ornamentation could be re-purposed? Re: [lace] Making Lace a different way
Hello Angela and everyone It sounds like you will have to find a way to move the bobbins that suits you best. Continental bobbins on a bolster ('rolle') pillow are worked 'palms up' - they hang from the pillow and you can place your hand under the pairs. Continentals on the cookie pillow will have to be picked up. You could try levering the pairs from the cookie pillow to the palm of your hand with a stick or ruler if the picking-up action causes pain. Then, you would still be able to use your midlands. To prevent continentals from rolling, we use divider pins all over the place :) I do hope someone is nearby who can help you further. Good luck. I use the square bobbins because it eliminates the rolling around on the pillow. Also, when they are pushed aside as a group, they don't roll. You still can flick them over each other with your finger tips. The midland type really aggravate the arthritis in my thumbs so I can't use them at all -- but they are so very pretty and easy to tie up in orderly groups. Anything stuck to the outside of a piece of mail is subject to whatever processes the piece goes through - there is the chance card and lace will get mangled or smeared along the way, especially in sorting machinery. [lace] latest on the fire
The order to evacuate Los Alamos was given just before 2 yesterday. I loaded up the car with about half of my lace - then talked two neighbors into taking the rest of it in their cars (IOLI, please given them an award!). I'm now in Santa Fe with the lace in my friend's garage - I have no idea where the other two cars went. I was not able to get the rest of the collection out - all the books, antique pillows and stands, dolls, postcards, stamps, etc., or 97% of anything else I own. The fire is now working its way down a nearby mountain toward the town. Wind will be bad today, and temperature about 5 degrees hotter than yesterday. The house will either burn or it won't. What the probability of those two outcomes is I have no idea. This is the second time I've been through this - in 2000, only 4 buildings on my block survived. But there were several days of warning so I was able to get almost everything out. With this fire there were only hours of warning. Frankly, this time I think it's a matter of when the fire hits town, not if. But the primary concern is locating all the evacuees and making sure everyone is safe. Nothing else really matters. The amazing firefighting teams up in the area are the best, and we've learned a lot since 2000. I hear planes overhead headed north - just like Beth described in her wonderful post. You can see the current extent of the fire at http://nmfireinfo.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/lasconchas_6_28.jpg  The 60,000 acres mentioned apparently is a mistake, it's more like 45,000 acres. And so we sit and wait. Just like last time. I'm working on a new post on LaceNews that I know everyone will love - I think it will be up by the end of the day. Lyn - Yes I have have had surgery on my right thumb but now the left one is playing up and I need to find a pain free way of pursuing my hobby/obsession and one that causes less damage to my joints. At the moment I pick up my bobbins with my thumb and forefinger, as I have done for the last 20 years, and this is causing the problem. By the way, my son works in Sweden quite a lot so I may ask him to go bobbin shopping! Diane - you mention square bobbins but I don't understand how you 'flick' them, and do you still pick them up as described above? Jacquie - When you pick up the bobbins 'palm up' do you still have to manipulate them with your thumb as well as your fingers? I have seen lacemakers using bobbins with bulbous ends and (I think) they pick the bobbins up (palms down) with their fingers tucked in and using the first knuckle joint, but after that I'm stuck. Joepe - Thank you for your phone number I will ring you as we come to Bexhill most Thursday's to visit my Mother-in-law and my parents and I could easily visit Bexhill at any other time. No-one has mentioned seeing lace being made on the Internet slowly enough for me to see how it's done, is that because there isn't any or am I not looking in the right place? To protect them I will sometimes place them into clear postcard sleeves which I purchase at: http://www.univenture.com/shop/7x5_photo_and_postcard_envelope_pack_of_25.php I don't always put them into a sleeve because it's fun to have them arrive with the stamp on the back actually canceled. [lace] machine washing lace
I have a pair of collar corners which go in the washing machine - usually still attached to the blouse!! The blouse does not need ironing, but I just pull the lace into shape and dab an iron on it and they come out looking nearly as good as new! They are Beds lace with a 9 pin edge! I stitched the footside onto a length of narrow cotton tape, and stitch through this, with a few Homeward Bounders to attach the lace to the garment. It works, - not very elegant, but no-one sees the inside of the blouse collar, just the pretty lace bits on the outside!! It took me a while to work out how to use them, as they are an odd shaped triangle!
