[lace] Silk thread

2011-09-05 Thread Jean Nathan
Can anyone tell me what purse silk or purse twist is? From what I have
managed to glean from the web, it appears to be three ply silk with a high
sheen and thicknesses quoted are 300 and 500, or numbers to that effect.
Three of the definitions I've found are:

A stout silk thread used for knitting purses, and also for embroidery with
the needle. Also purse-twist.

Alchemy Yarns - Alchemy Silken Straw: 76e - Citrine - $30.00
100 % silk. 40 grams, 236 yards. 6 spi on US size 4 needle. A sport weight
purse silk floss with a unique texture. Lovely worked double if desired.
This fiber reaches its full and drapey potential when introduced to a hot
iron

: a smooth tightly twisted silk thread used esp. for embroidery or knitting

I have a couple of miser's purses and patterns for a few. All the patterns,
whether for knitted or crocheted, call for purse silk. They nearly all use
seed beads or cut steel beads (I have found a source for those) incorporated
into the knitting or crochet. I've chosen one pattern to make and the
instructions call for:
½ once size EE Corticelli Purse Twist or ½ ounce No 300 Florence Knitting
Silk and two No.18 needles.

Converting the needle size to it's modern equivalent isn't a problem, but
the silk is. What I've found on the web so far doesn't help with thickness.
Brenda's book has one reference to Corticelli silk in two thicknesses, but I
don't know if that's what I'm looking for:

Belding Corticelli pure silk (reeled) A 3Z 35 and Buttonhole twist D 2S 20.

Re: [lace] Silk thread

2011-09-05 Thread Brenda Paternoster
Hello Jean

Can anyone tell me what purse silk or purse twist is?
Sorry but I don't know what purse silk or purse twist is.

From what I have managed to glean from the web, it appears to be three ply
silk with a high sheen and thicknesses quoted are 300 and 500, or numbers to
that effect. Three of the definitions I've found are:

A stout silk thread used for knitting purses, and also for embroidery with

fiber reaches its full and drapey potential when introduced to a hot iron

: a smooth tightly twisted silk thread used esp. for embroidery or knitting

40 grams, 236 yards. = 40gms per 216m = 40/216gms per 1m = 40/216 x 9000 gms
per 9000m = 1667denier
If it's a 3 ply thread then each ply would be 556 denier. That is pretty
thick, but then if it's supposed to knit at 6 stitches per inch (24 sts per
10cm) that would be about right.

UK 4-ply usually knits to about 28 stitches per 10cm and DK to 22 stitches per
10cm

I have a couple of miser's purses and patterns for a few. All the patterns,
whether for knitted or crocheted, call for purse silk. They nearly all use
seed beads or cut steel beads (I have found a source for those) incorporated
into the knitting or crochet. I've chosen one pattern to make and the
 instructions call for:
½ once size EE Corticelli Purse Twist or ½ ounce No 300 Florence Knitting
 Silk and two No.18 needles.

Converting the needle size to it's modern equivalent isn't a problem, but the
silk is.

If size A is 35 w/cm and size D is 20 w/cm then size EE is going to be somewhat
thicker - possibly in the region of 5-6 w/cm but that is a guess, though it
would fit with 4-ply/DK knitting yarn.

Twisted silk probably means spun silk rather than filament silk and it
certainly doesn't mean floss.

I think that you will have to investigate what silk knitting yarns are
currently on the market. A couple of websites to start with are

[lace] Searching for Floretta thread

2011-09-05 Thread Rissanen, Outi (NSN - FI/Espoo)
Dear All,

I am trying to help a friend here. She is tatting a hat, made a big
mistake, undoing all she has done is out of question and now there is
not enough thread to finish the hat.

She bought the thread years ago from Hungary and now I can not find it
from Internet. So, it is very probably not produced any more. Therefore
I am asking if any of you have this thread and is willing to part with
it. I am sure we can agree about payment/swap, whatever...

The thread is called Floretta (mercerised cotton), manufactured by
Coats. Colour number is 41 (variegated red). The ball is from lot. 11,
but I do believe my friend is happy to receive this colour even if the
lot does not match. Thread size is 20.

So, If you have this thread or know from where it could be found,
please, send me a personal email. I am terribly late when reading my
digests. (Once again, sigh.)

Hoping there is someone who is able to help my friend,

Outi

[lace] Re: Silk Thread

2011-09-05 Thread Susan Reishus

The Belding Corticelli Buttonhole Twist is available at better fabric
stores.  Last I had seen,  Treadle Yard Goods (1338 Grand Avenue, Saint Paul,
MN
651-698-9690) had some.

www.treadleyardgoods.com

Since that market is
dying overall (except quilting cottons) you could try Fabric.com and search
thread and click view all.  There are loads and I wasn't thorough, but
perhaps if you like something strong but with a duller finish, a quality
quilting thread would work.  I am not an expert at quilting, so perhaps
someone else can help.  I think that the rayon topstitch/decorative threads
would work, but I don't do much machine embroidery either.

There is YLI Silk
Buttonhole Twist on cards, that you can find via google, and has many sources.
There is also Habu, which has exotic things in all ranges, and no doubt they
would have something that appeals.  Their colors tend to run in the earthy
range, but with silk, it will dye well (if you are so inclined), even with
food coloring and vinegar (a bit of warmth to the water helps, but isn't
necessary).  Often salt helps set too, but I digress.

I would also check a
cross stitch store, as they carry loads of novelty threads.  The most
comprehensive I know of is Stitchville USA

17760 Highway 7
Minnetonka, MN
55345-4120
(952) 474-1700
but you would need to call.  Deb, the owner is very
knowledgeable and will order (by the box) what she may not have, but she had
loads.

The other is Nordic Needle in Fargo, and their number is:
800.433.4321
Most know them as a hardanger source, and though they have
thread, their inventory is much less than Stitchville USA.These are US
sources, so apologies to across the pond.

Japan has so many resources now,
for what we need in various forms of needlework, so you could also try eBay or
Amazon.co.jp and click English (if applicable) to ferret out other things.
(Deb at Stitchville also has silk threads from Japan in many sizes, or will
order).

Hopefully your problem has been remedied already.

Best,
Susan

[lace-chat] Back from Iceland holidays

2011-09-05 Thread martina . dewille
Dear friends,

long long ago, there was a German girl writing on this group.
Well, I am still around but rather busy and therefore quiet.

I do read many of your mail and enjoy them.
Now I just want to let you know, that last night we came back from a 2-weeks
holiday in
Iceland, where our eldest daughter is living since Dec. 2010.(The same who was
in Windsor,
GB and in Bruxelles, Belgium before - and that is where my holidays were in
2009 and 2010).

Iceland is a very interesting country and the people are very friendly. DH and
DS were very
keen on adventures so we got some off-road trips in a rented jeep including
river crossings
through rivers and bumpy roads.

We had a great time and also enjoyed one week with DD Tabea. We even saw a
probably
Scandinavian lace pillow in a culture museum with a piece of unfinished Braid
lace and a few
tangled bobbins.

I will pop up again hopefully soon and give you a link to some photos DH will
put up.

Tomorrow I have another bobbin lace class for children for 2 afternoons. So now
I better get
going packing the stuff in suitcases to take along tomorrow after work.

Happy lacemaking,

Martina in Germany
