[lace] Fake Vermeer / placing pins

2011-10-27 Thread Vibeke Ervo
Years ago I bought 'Handmade Lace and Patterns' by Annette Feldman
(1975). It is a strange book, while the history of lace chapter is
traditional, all the patterns are restricted to crochet, knitting and
tatting.

At that time I collected pictures with paintings of lacemakers, making
friends buying postcards at the Louvre and even getting photos from
Eastern Germany. When I tried to buy a copy of the Vermeer Lacemaker
in Annette Feldman's book I was told that it was made by a 'follower
of Vermeer' and no picture was offered.

Do take a look at the bobbins:
The girl in the real painting is hiding the lower part, so the fake
has some sorry small sticks, not at all like the Dutch bobbins.

BTW when working Freehand Lace you are supposed to place the pins at
the left side with your left hand and those at the right side with
your right hand.

[lace] SWAT PPT / how long does it take

2011-10-27 Thread Jo

Hello SWAT-spiders

With christmas we are asked to do something with our hobbies at work.
Of course that's a lace demo / have-a-go by me. But it might be nice to
add a powerpoint presentation. Couldn't the virtual lace-SWAT team
assemble something at for example http://www.slideshare.net/ with a
creative commons license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/

some thoughts about hte content:
* the SWAT poster turned into a template
* a slide in the FAQ category: a baseball bat next to a bayeaux bobbin:
size matters
* modern examples of lace: both stunning pieces of art and simple yet
attractive pieces

* various types of pillows
Do you have other suggestions?

another question to prepare my demo, how many time needs an average
unitiated adult to make the famous fish, how many pairs/rows go in that
fish?

Dear Jeri,
Thank you so very much for calling this to our attention. Sure wish there
were more pictures. After my dull work today, I rewarded myself by looking
through the pictures and downloading some of them as very fine examples of the
art. I am up to page 8 of 21. Will we be able to find out what these sold
for?

2011-10-27 Thread Annette Meldrum
Thanks Jeri for a most interesting browse.
What a shame to see these items being sold off from Collections. I guess
they were stored away from sight in these museums anyway and never seen by
the public?
You wonder where they will end up?
Museums usually don't have money to purchase from auctions these days I
think? They seem to be more interested in selling.

I was also interested in the suggested prices. Much lower than I imagined
for most items.
It would be interesting to see the final selling prices.

I wonder how much interest there will still be in the fine laces for future
generations so far removed from the times and knowledge of the methods of
production.
The xyz generations are so minimalist with quick fix and throw out habits.

[lace] lace auction in New York

2011-10-27 Thread Lorelei Halley
Jeri and Annette
Jeri thanks for posting that link. I just spent an hour looking through it
all. There are some really spectacular pieces, but also some disappointments.
In many cases I just wish the photographer had gotten closer to the lace.
There are some mistakes in the description of what the laces actually are.
And in some cases the distance of the camera makes it impossible to be sure if
the description is accurate. The high points are an 18th century Honiton,
which Santina Levey might have called late Bath Brussels. Honiton that old
is hard to find. There is also a piece with needle lace fillings which are
much more complex than what one usually sees. Well worth searching through.
Most of the laces appear on pages 6-9, I think. And I agree that the posted
prices seem low. If collectors actually get the laces for the posted prices
they will be cackling with glee for months.

I can imagine some reasons that a museum might sell off laces. If they have
30 pieces of point de gaze in their collection but only a total of 100 pieces
of needlelace, they might decide that they should keep only the very best of
each type and let the more ordinary ones go.

Among the ones in this auction, the most interesting from the point of view of
possible best laces is the Valenciennes lace shawl. The description says it
uses a machine made ground. While this is possible, the kind of Val that is
part lace construction is quite rare, in my experience. This is one of the
pieces that I wish we had better photos of. The ground is very regular and
all moves in the same direction. It could be machine made, but that would
also be true of hand made Val. What is unusual is a triangular shawl made of
Valenciennes lace. If the ground is handmade, that is amazing, and would have
required a lot of piecing of strips. If it really is handmade motifs
appliqued onto machine mesh that would be easier to accomplish, and remove it
from the spectacular category to the interesting category.

Anybody else have ideas about these laces?

[lace] Vermeers paintings.

2011-10-27 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
Well, with many thanks to Ilske and Ann-Marie, I have found that my lovely
picture of a mother teaching her daughter Lacemaking is by an English
painter Samuel Barling Clarke painted around 1860.

I thought she looked Victorian and the bobbins were spangled, indicating
an English background.

These 2 kind ladies researched for me, and also found that Clarke painted
another lacemaker, - this time an elderly lady, (Grandma?) with a child
learning to read by her side.

[lace-chat] tongue-in-cheek politics

2011-10-27 Thread Agnes Boddington

Are you Conservative or Labour/Green?

Food for thought

Father and daughter --- wise words

A young woman was about to finish her first year of university. Like so many
others her age, she considered herself to be Labor Party minded, and she
was very much in favour of higher taxes to support her education and for
more government aid programs - in other words, the redistribution of
wealth..

She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch blue-ribbon
Conservative, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she
had attended and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her
Father had for years harboured a selfish desire to keep what he thought
should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on
the rich and the need for more government programs.

The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors must be the
truth, and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she
was doing at university.

Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 90% average, and
let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a
very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no
time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even have
time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many university friends because
she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, How is your friend Audrey doing? She
replied, Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she
never studies and she barely has a 50% average. She is so popular on campus;
university for her is a blast. She's always invited to all the parties, and
lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes because she's too hung
over.

Her wise father asked his daughter, Why don't you go to the Dean's office
and ask him to deduct 20% off your average and give it to your friend who
only has 50%. That way you will both have a 70% average, it would be fair
and you would both be equal.

The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired
back, That's a crazy idea; how would that be fair! I've worked really hard
for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey
has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my
tail off!

The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently,

Welcome to the Conservative side of the fence.

If anyone has a better explanation of the difference between Conservative
and Labour/Greens, I'm all ears.
If you ever wondered what side of the fence you sit on, this is a great
test!

If a Conservative supporter doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one.
If a Labour/Green doesn't like guns, they want all guns outlawed.

If a Conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat.
If a Labour/Green is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for
everyone.

If a Conservative is gay, he quietly leads his life.
If a Labour/Green is gay, he demands legislated respect.

If a Conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his
situation.
If a Labour/Green is down and out he wonders who is going to take care of
him.

If a Conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.
Labour/Greens demand that those they don't like should be banned.

If a Conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.
A Labour/Green non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.
(Unless it's a foreign religion, of course!!)

If a Conservative reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a
good laugh.
A Labour/Green will delete it because he's offended.
