[lace] pin under 4 edge
Kim If you are asking a seriously historical question, then my answer is a little different. I have seen that edge in some of the oldest laces that I've seen in the museum (Art Institute of Chicago). Many of the LePompe laces show a winkiepin or "pin after 2" edge. But since I haven't seen the entirety of both published versions, I can't make a blanket statement. My impression is that the pin after 4 edge was discovered fairly early, by the 17th century at least, to solve the problem of a curling-up-edge. RE: [lace] pin under 4 edge
I was introduced to the phrase in a workshop with Ulrike Volker several years ago, she said "pin before 4" for what I thought of as the standard straight footside edge. The phrase stuck, and now I use it whenever I'm teaching someone bobbin lacemaking. My guess on the origin of the phrase would be it evolved in many places, as a good way of describing a straight edge footside. When I was learning myself, I was using a bobbin lace pattern of a large butterfly from an Anna magazine, where they described the two different kinds of edges as "inner pin" and "outer pin" and the picture was not good enough to figure out what they meant. (Inner pin is straight footside edge, i.e. pin before 4 - outer pin is what I think is sometimes called a winkie pin, where the workers go out, round a pin, and come back again, like the edge of a fan). It was a while before the penny dropped and I knew what they meant. Noelene in Cooma nlaffe...@ozemail.com.au Hi! I am doing some research abouot the pin under 4 edge, and can not seem to find any information about where it may have come from. I have consulted with multiple books, seasoned teachers, lace experts, etc. Before giving up, I thought I would post to the group to see if anyone might know when/where or how it originated. [lace] pin under 4 edge
Kim I have heard the term "pin after 4" edge but not "pin under 4" edge. Pin after 4 is just another way of describing the "sewing edge". I first heard the term from Flemish speaking lace maker who taught at Kantcentrum in the 1980s. She gave some workshops in the U.S. also. My impression is that she was just translating into English the phrase used in her region. All the recent Jubilee coverage on the TV has caused me to unearth a treasure which is worth a close up look…….. perhaps for a design idea or two. It is a piece of the damask used to decorate Westminster Abbey in 1952 at The Coronation. I have noticed that it has also been used on other Royal occasions since. The motif subjects are often found in 'Royal' lace. Sherry, Is this it from Amazon.com? http://www.amazon.com/Kikkerland-1601-A-Solar-Queen/dp/B003S5S6X2 I assume you already have the Knitted Royal Wedding book. Did think about making a couple of them, but with Kate in a lace wedding dress instead of a knitted one. But then I do a lot of thinking about doing things which never get done. Poole Bobbin Lace Society is demonstrating at Kingston Lacey (an historic house near Poole) and Eve Morton (Chair) was busily collecting red, white and blue lace for the display, red and blue being the most difficult to find. I didn't realise that, over the years, I had made a few items in both red (not necessarily pillar box red) and blue. [lace] Proper Subject Lines for Lace
Dear Lace Friends, especially Newbies: We all have had problems trying to identify if a message is legitimate, or should be deleted without reading. Today there is in my Spam folder a message from "d.haber" with no relevant lace Subject -- just "hello". "Hello" is a classic word used by spammers, instead of giving a real Subject. Many of us delete all messages with inane Subjects like this, and then the sender wonders why there were no responses.. May I request that everyone use relevant-to-lace Subject lines, please? Suggestion: Write your memo, then see what the main Subject is and plug it in place. Even something like "introducing myself as a new member" is better than "hello". [lace] Have pillow will travel
Back from my travels visiting my ailing mother last week in the fabulous sunshine. I took the travel pillow I bought last year and had set up, with your help, to work a narrow strip of lace. Often when there I do spend some time each day working on my lace, but sadly I only got chance to add about six or 10 pins on one afternoon and never got the chance to do more that whole week. In stead I spent much of the time doing little constructive things to help her ongoing (one of which was making sure she got some new medication for her terrible legs and then taking them every day), Thankfully that is happening so I definately dont begrudge my time. She did really enjoy seeing the new pillow and how useful it is given suitable space and time to work. I wore my new grey top with the black worked lace on and she enjoyed seeing that as well and since we got back I turned the top inside out, folded it and popped it into one of those net bags and put it into the wash with the rest of the load. When it came out of the machine I turned it back the right way, shook it out and put it onto a coathanger to dry and when I thought to check the lace out it is looking fantastic. I hadn't even needed to tweek it while wet to make it sit right, so I am really pleased with the outcome of that. I now have plans to make one or two more pieces of lace for my own clothing, but need to finish the current piece off first and also a smallish motif I promised a friend but haven't been motivated to work at it yet. It is one out of my head so its not as relaxing as carrying on with my current piece. I need to give myself a push though as the time is galloping when it must be finished. Briefly on the current thread of arthritic hands I do have a condition sister to Rheumatoid Arthritis which affects my joints but find cold stops my hands working easily. I often wear my handeze gloves which are like a second skin and help the circulation and make it possible to work some days where I doubt I would be able to without them. Good for tendernitis, and other difficulties as well. Just a very satisfied customer over the last 11 years. Re: [lace] Arthritic hands and Picking Up Bobbins
And by talking about it, others can let you know what worked for them!!! I also have ET. There is a website for the International Essential Tremor Foundation if you want more info. For me, though,*tinting my glasses green made a HUGE difference!!! *I've had it over 15 years and at onje point I had people worried about me having Parkinson's and asking me to go to the Dr. The Dr told me I had ET. Drink wine before dinner to calm your hands enough to eat they said. Then while I was at an art class, someone told me about a book they were reading and it said red lenses increase tremor and green calms it. So I went home and talked to my optometrist. They were happy to do an experiment with me and tinted my glasses. I went from being unable to hit the holes with my needle in cross stitch, to back happily stitching!!! Ten years later I can see my tremor increasing again, but fine tuning the green color has worked wonders. Prepricking a pattern has helped me with getting pins to the right spot when making lace with my tremor. But the green glasses help the most! Please pass this on. Lauren Snyder in Snohomish WA. Re: [lace] Arthritic hands and Picking Up Bobbins
My biggest problem is a gradually worsening tremor--"essential tremor", inherited from my father's side of the family. My Dad's tremor is very bad, so I can see where I'm headed and it's scary. I'm already having trouble putting pins in (hitting the hole when your hand is shaking all over the place is a challenge), and there are times when I have trouble keeping my bobbins (Continental) under control. Parallel to the lace problems, I also did a lot of off-loom bead-weaving and now have to wait until I have a particularly calm spell to do that anymore. Embroidery is also getting harder, since I like to do the fine work on linen. At work I have trouble controlling the mouse, and at bad times even typing. There is no effective medication for the condition, only brain surgery ("deep-brain stimulation"), which I'm sure the insurance won't pay for until it really badly affects my ability to work. I'm not sure there is any immediate solution except reducing stress (deep breathing, meditation, etc.) but I appreciate the opportunity to complain about the problems a little bit. Also, hearing what others go through puts my lesser problems in perspective since at least the tremor isn't physically painful. Thanks, Jean! Re: [lace] LOKK necklace pattern
Having traced the pattern through google and the archives, I would think that you just didn't tension tightly enough as you pin, to wrap the previous left-to-right row of work over the shoe lace. Basically you are making the bobbinlace equivalent of knitted i-cord (like frrench knitting) and if you have ever done that you will remember you have to tension firmly as you knit the first stitch or two of each row. What the instructions don't say though is how to get the ridges which are what make it unusual. I suppose that the thick and thin thread pairs need to be placed alternately, but there don't seem to enough ridges to need as many as 20 pairs, thus giving 10 thick pairs; it looks as if there are four or five at the most. As the gaps between the ridges are quite wide, it's almost as if there are a couple of thin pairs then one thick one. The spiralling probably just happens; did you get that?.
