Re: [lace] Handwerken zonder Grenzen

2012-07-30 Thread M SINCLAIR
Hello all,

Handwerken zonder grenzen has its own website;
http://www.handwerkenzondergrenzen.nl/
Unfortunately it is just in Dutch.
You can reorder old magazines, even the 2003-123 magazine.  But again it is
only if you live in the Netherlands.  It is also an expensive magazine, so
reordering might be quite costly.  My mother has bought some second hand ones
in the past and they are lovely, but not the magazine you are looking for.

Sorry I can't be of any more help,

Joke Sinclair in a rainy Holland

Handwerken zonder Grenzen

Hello Susan
I had never heard of this magazine,
but googled it. It is dutch, as am I, and says that it features crafts from
all over the world.
Could not find any info on whether it has lace in it too.
Next time I am over there I'll make sure to buy a copy.

Hello All!  On another list, a member has requested an
article (Guatemala Sampler, Issue 132, Oct 2003) from this periodical.  If
anyone can help, please contact me off-list.  I've never heard of this mag--do
they feature any lace or just needlework?  Sincerely, Susan Hottle, curious in

RE: [lace] Church lace

Dear Diane, et al,
That's really quite helpful, as you can see from the picture of the lace,
it is, in essence, torchon. I think careful measurement before and after
washing the swatch will go a long way to figuring things out, and make it
easier for it to stay in sync with the cloth. And probably easier to clean in
the long run. I will be asking the head of the Altar Guild how they plan to
clean something like this. I do like the hot hot water idea, although where
I'm going to find a place to do that with 73 inches of lace is a problem I'll
have to solve.

Some time ago I washed my #50 thread linen torchon project in the washing
machine on warm water in a bag. It was dried flat and pinned out a little
but not really stretched (it did not have picots). Best I recall, the
measurements were 26 x 6. I pre-measured and found that it shrunk 5% in
the long width. I'm assuming that it shrunk the same in the narrow
measurement.

So this may be some type of guide for torchon, linen size 50. I'm also
going to assume that other types of laces will have different proportions.

[lace] UK Lace magazine

2012-07-30 Thread pene piip

I'm very happy that my copy of Lace #147 has arrived today.
I was pleased to see that the tatted lace on the back cover was made by
Europa Chang with whom I shared a hotel room in Caen at the OIDFA Congress.

I was sorry that while at Caen that I didn't get to meet Ilske Diane Z
and several other UK Arachneans.

But I did finally meet one of my second cousins at the Mayor's reception.
It was hard to read name tags I know that my name tag kept turning
around so that it was always back to front.

Maybe if flags were printed on the name-tag attendees wouldn't have to
ask where people were from.
I think that trying to read small print from a few feet away is hard for
many of us who are short sighted.

Now I have to write a report of my trip, soon before the memories fade. ;-)
Ciao for now,
Pene in Tartu, Estonia where we just had a hot Sunday (33C).

Hi All,

There used to be a Church Sew List a number of years ago and we were able to
learn lots from that list.

Most of the church lace I do is filet crochet and the fabric distributed by
Church Stores in Sydney is called 'sharella' which is not linen, so does not
put up some of those problems - washes very well. It is hard to get best
quality lighter weight fabric for the smaller linens. I have a blocking board
covered by woven chech fabric which makes blocking crochet easier.

I have a length of a torchon edge, pattern from Marie-Clare Downham's book, is
worked in DMC 30, no destination as yet.

Any conversation about Ecclesiastical work is interesting to me.

Wh at about stretching it into shape on the kitcehn counter (cleaned
first!)?  Would that be long enough for you?  Generally I find that if I pat
the lace into shape while it is wet and leave it to dry on a clean, flat
surface, it keeps it's shape well

  Dear Mary et al,
I agree that talking about something we do with others of a similar
  mind always increases our knowledge.
I looked at the website for the Church Store in Sydney. Since I'm in
America, I won't be buying there, but it is good to know what is
available. I suspect I need to take a look, person to person, with
touch as a part of it. Buying fabric online, especially something
like linen or cotton, and even more especially less common fabrics,
seems to me to be a big gamble. I do like the prickings for sale at
the Swedish site. I've never bought from them online, so I don't
know how difficult it would be, but it might be worthwhile for some.
  http://www.svenskaspetsar.se/sv/category/89/altarspets I'm sure the
site could be translated. In my experience, most Swedes speak
English, so contact shouldn't be difficult. Finding lace with a true
ecclesiastical style is not easy, and here it's all done for you. A
card pricking already pricked, and a black and white diagram are
  provided. Usual disclaimer.
