Re: [lace] Fibre Optic cable
Hi, I've played with fibre optic bare cable for irish crochet. Most is end-emitting but some transmission of light along the length occurs via microbending. Modern f/o cable is plastic, not glass, so no breaking problems. I bought a range of diff diameters from 1mm to 0.25mm thick. Hasn't worked properly as yet with irish crochet due to too much microbending & the light loses coherence (ie all light lost) after a short distance. If you're on Ravelry I've put the project (an irish rose) & pics there (search for "lacegrrl" - that's me!). Will try using thread around a packing cord of f/o cable, I think this may work better. Bobbin lace should be ok, as winding & twisting will induce less microbending (you want some, so light is transmitted lengthwise, but not too much). Re: [lace] Teneriffe book
Kudos to Mary for offering such a book. At the outrages prices of book out there it is a nice to see that a good home is the criteria for this book. As she is not a member I offered to post it for her. She is not asking for payment, only postage. Hello Alex I hope you are keeping well. I have been given a copy of your Tenerife Lace book. As I already have one this is surplus to my needs. Do you have details of anyone who is wanting one. If so let me know and I will arrange with them to send to them. Best wishes Mary Fishleigh m...@mcfishleigh.freeserve.co.uk Happy lacemaking Alex - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Fibre Optic cable
I am unaware of there being different thicknesses but what I do know from my work in the telecoms industry is that you can only bend it a certain amount before the glass core snaps so winding onto bobbins would be an absolute no no. I believe our engineers coil fibres no tighter than a 12cm radius or thereabouts. I would imagine fibres would work better in a half stitch ground rather than sections of cloth stitch. Re: [lace] Fibre Optic cable
I have never used Fibre Optic cable for lacemaking, because as far as I know it doesn't light up along it's length but only at its tip - so, for example, you would only see the lights at the ends of the fringe of a bookmark. I'd love to know that I am wrong, because I really fancy seeing lace light up along its length. [lace] Fibre Optic cable
My lace life is very busy at the moment with several projects on the go at the same time and here comes another one. I have been making lace for a conceptual artist, and teaching her to make lace as well, for several years now. Neither of us make a lot of money at it but it is getting lace out there into the main stream of the art world. After I told her that lace has been made with fibre optic cable, she now has an idea of doing a project with it. The trouble is that I have never used it. Is there someone amongst you clever spiders who can give me some information on the properties of fibre optic cable and how it can be used for a bobbin lace project. Are there different thicknesses and if so what is the easiest one to work with? I cannot imagine winding it onto bobbins, so how does one handle it while working? Does the pricking have to be a rather large scale? Any information will be a great help to me. I am quite excited about trying it out.
