Re: [lace] Finished mangling!
What a beautiful scarf! I am glad you got it to be soft enough to wear. It would be a shame not to be able to wear something so pretty. I am glad that scarves are becoming more popular for lacemakers. It means the lace is not stored away, or on a wall, but out, being used. Antje wrote: I have finally finished mangling, as I already told you, and have uploaded a photo of the scarf to my Flickr album. I hope you like it, because it is not a usual piece of bobbin lace. I like working with coarse threads and also the look of it, as it is more informal and casual. Now, after mangling, I can definitely use it! In fact, I have already done so. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mi-pequeno-taller/8241351014/in/photostream/ My email sends out an automatic message. Arachne members, please ignore it. Re: [lace] Lacemaking in Croatia
Thank you for sharing that, David. When I was in Korcula in Croatia recently I saw quite a lot of lace on display in the Barilo Folk Museum in Blato. I took quite a few photos but as the displays were behind glass not many of the photos came out very well. There are a few in my flikr pages http://www.flickr.com/photos/28840295@N08/8112999343/in/photostream/ but I must apologise for the awful quality of the photos. [lace] lace making in Croatia
David and all That video has sparked a lot of interest in Pag needle lace (the Croatian island where it is made) since it was published. We have a group for it on needlelacetalk, and several of our members are interested. But since there is no instruction book yet, in any language (as far as I know) all we can do is look at the photos and try to figure it out. Pag lace appears to be a local variation of reticello. The info and resources we have found so far are here: http://needlelacetalk.ning.com/group/pagneedlelace The video also shows a form of sol lace, and some bobbin lace. Re: [lace] Lace Guild Advent Calendar
Thank you Jean and David for yet another nice lace calendar. Because of all the other things going on in my life at the present time I just haven't got around to making any changes to mine, or thought of quiz questions, so if anyone wants to look at all the same pages again, just for fun, it's at: http://paternoster.orpheusweb.co.uk/adventcalendar/adventcalendarfinished.htm Brenda On 30 Nov 2012, at 23:57, Jean Leader wrote: It's that time again. Re: [lace] Lacemaking in Croatia
Thanks, David! That was very interesting. Has anyone ever heard of Aloe fiber use before? That is what they were using for the tenerife-like lace from Hvar. It looked like they pulled it from the stalk, rather like when stringing celery...(??) I wonder what, if any, processing takes place before it is used as thread? Does anyone know? Re: [lace] Lace making in Croatia
One suggestion would be to contact Croatian American Cultural Centers. I did a search, and found several. You can write to them or their gift shops asking if there are books of Pag lace instruction. Although there are no instructions, Annie Louise Potter wrote a book A Living Mystery - The International Art and History of Crochet, published in 1990 by A. J. Publishing International, ISBN 1-879409-00-3, that contains some text and photographs about the island of Pag, beginning on pg. 137. There are some photos of landmarks earlier in the book. Lorelei, if crocheters know how to contact Annie Potter, she may have collected further information during her travels. There may be instruction books in the local language. A quote from her book: Of particular interest to the history of both lace and crochet is the Adriatic island of Pag. A tiny dot on the map, this rocky and barren land off the coast of Yugoslavia and directly exposed to the cold winds sweeping down from Mt. Velebit, has been a center for the lace art for over 400 years. Indeed, the whole economy of Pag has consistently depended upon the making of fine lace and also crochet for longer than perhaps any other community in the Western World. It is unique. Special. Very old. Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center In a message dated 12/3/2012 4:29:43 P.M. [lace] Pag lace
Jeri I have done several internet searches for info on Pag lace, and have found a few websites with photos. So far none have turned up with any instruction books. I have found one recent book, but it appears to be about Pag and Pag lace, but not about how to make it. We recently found a new member who does know how to make it, so she is our best hope at present. I keep my antennae out for concrete contacts.
