[lace] LED craft lamps

2013-05-12 Thread lynrbailey
Dear All,
First, I would like to mention again what my Withof teacher, Susie Johnson,
demonstrated concerning florescent lamps vs. incandescent light bulbs.
Florescent light bulbs have gas in them that vibrate. This makes the light
vibrate, which can immediately be seen if you put the florescent and
incandescent side by side. At the time, LED's were not acceptable because
there weren't enough of them.

I have a Verilux craft lamp with 11 LED's which is fine for coarse lace work,
as it is highly portable, and the light is decent. I never use batteries,
because the light is brighter if the lamp is plugged in. When I heard that
there was an Ott light with 30 LED's, I checked it out on Amazon. It is not
very expensive, about $24, maybe a bit more, the black is cheaper, and as they
do, they were recommending that it be purchased with a particular AC adapter.
I haven't been using it more than a few days, but so far I am pleased. No
batteries in it. AAA batteries are silly for hours of lacemaking, and besides,
the light is never as bright. I will be drilling holes through the plastic
base, where there are no wires,so I can pin it to my pillow. So far the lights
have worked well, although it's early days. But it is very lightweight, can be
adapted to pin to the pillow, the AD adapter works well, and the light is
bright and clear. So far I haven't seen any craft lamp of si!
milar price that has anywhere near that number of LED's.

cool weather, after several days of true late spring. It's time to be able to
put away the sweaters, and that's not happening.

[lace] LED

2013-05-12 Thread Brian Lemin
As I do not usually drop in on discussions other than antique bobbins ( I
have been following the 8th) I am bit late on this.

Both Jean (my wife) patch worker, xstitcher and I have benefitted greatly
from LED lamps which seem to be readily available and reasonable cheap in
our area.

Jean was recommended to get this "white" light by her ophthalmologist as she
is heading for the cataract coming over her eyes, she loved it, so did I,
and I promptly bought one for my music stand and another for my lathe.

Best thing since sliced bread! :)

Have a look at this link. I believe that British 8th Navy is a truncation due

Re: Fw: [lace] Ott LED mobile task light

2013-05-12 Thread John Mead
Ottlite is a manufacturer of lighting thingies in
the USA. They specialize in full spectrum lighting. On the whole they have
a good reputation, but it appears that with their battery operated lamps
they're coasting on their reputation.

[lace] Stanhopes

2013-05-12 Thread Brenda Paternoster
Further to the recent discussions on these I have a bobbin with a Stanhope
spangle, which I inherited from an elderly student. A lovely lady Ruth died in
1996 aged 86 and I recall her having showed me the special spangle which her
son had bought for her.

It's set in sterling silver, assay mark for Birmingham 1984, and the image is
of a page from a Derry & Tom's catalogue showing silk over blouses for 12/11
(12 shillings, 11pence) up to 15/11. The style of the blouses is very straight
and boxy, with knee length skirt - looks to me to be early 1930s.

Re: [lace] Exciting find

2013-05-12 Thread The Lace Bee
A word of warning on these records.

The records me held as paper for all armed forces but a few years a go there
was a fire at the records office (Hayes Middlesex) and many papers got burned,
destroyed or singed.

When you do a search you will see what has been scanned to date. For example,
my father requested his father's service records and these are there to see
because they were micro Fisched when he made his request even though the
original were mainly destroyed in the fire. But his records are not on yet.

The Aussie's father's records are not on line.

So just because there is nothing returned doesn't mean that there is nothing.

Kind Regards

Re: [lace] Exciting find

2013-05-12 Thread Brenda Paternoster
Jean, the website you are referring to is that of the National Archives
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Home/OnlineCollections

Just type the name in and see what comes up. Put inverted commas around the
full name to stop the search engine from searching on each word. But, "Name
Surname" will not find Name Second-name Surname and vice versa.

I tried it with Terry's grandfather who was in the Royal Navy during WW1. Just
one document found and clicking on his name took me to another page from where
I could purchase a copy of the full document for £3.36. (no need to do that as
my SIL has his full Navy record). It didn't find my Grandad who was in the
Army during WW1, nor my Dad who was in the RAF during WW2.

Someone who died in 1981 may well have been on the 1911 census. If the name
isn't very common it may be possible to identify him that way, so if Clay would
like to post the name I will try looking at the 1911 census.

BTW it geneaolgy, not geneology.

You have the person's name, and for anyone who has served in the army, you
can look up their service record on a web site - can't remember which. Don't
know if it's the same for the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force, but I'm
sure someone on this list who's into geneology will be able to say if there
is. If so, that could give you a lead into all sorts of things about the
person whose name is on the bobbin and whether Brighton is relevant to him.

Fw: [lace] Ott LED mobile task light

2013-05-12 Thread Sue
I was interested about LED lights and bulbs to put into other lights and
lamps to aid my lacemaking but can I ask what the Ott bit means please. I
have sort of been able to follow this story but now have time to ask the
question.

Sue T Dorset UK

Hello All! Having received some off-list electrical counseling, I need to
clarify the issues with this light! This light does eat batteries--period.
It's not suitable for fine work over time because my light was purchased in
the morning & the batteries were dead by noon. The Ott company does not
supply an AC adapter with the initial purchase, nor does it sell one as an
after market accessory. The purchaser is on his/her own. As pointed out to
me privately, an AC adapter must be "sized" correctly for the device,
something I felt I had done when I purchased one at Radio Shack. Ott blames
the premature failure of the light on the use of an incompatible AC adapter.
The light weight, compact, flip up design is great. The light is pure.
Unfortunately it's a very expensive flash light & "green" only to the extent
that the entire device may be recycled at Waste Management. What should be
a win-win is a big lose-lose for the consumer. It turns out there are a
number of re!
views & suggestions regarding this product on Amazon. When my fluorescent
Ott light quit during the morning session of an EGA class, I didn't take
time to read product reviews. I needed a light immediately & the EGA vendor
had the LED model in stock. It turned out to be a costly mistake. I will
follow up on the other LED lighting suggestions that have been offered
before purchasing a replacement. There should be an answer here somewhere,
but is Ott part of the solution or part of the problem? Sincerely, Susan
Hottle, Erie, PA USA
