[lace] wedding dresses

2014-05-01 Thread elizabeth pass
Today's Daily Mail has an article about a new exhibition at the Victoria and
Albert Museum,

which starts on May 3rd and continues until 15th May next year. The theme
is Wedding Dresses 1775 - 2914, and there are many photos of the exhibition
or the actual weddings in the article.

The VA's website is here.

And, no, Queen Victoria's wedding dress is not among them.

Just a couple more - Mrs Read's introductory lessons from Lace were
republished by the Lace Guild, and have now been joined by her Alphabet, good
value at GBP5 and 6 respectively; I assume plus P+P.

Kind regards

[lace] Book: La Dentelle de Venise Contemporaine/Venice Needle Lace Today

2014-05-01 Thread Jeriames
New French/English Book - Review

La Dentelle de Venise Contemporaine
Venice Needle Lace Today
By Myriam Benamor
Published by Editions Didier Carpentier
Nov. 2013, 95-page Hardback
ISBN 978-2-84167-855-6

If you have wished for English translations of books published in France -
this one is for you! Support for this book may send a consumer message to
the publisher that we want more English translations! It is nice to be
able to read the ten pages of history of lace in Venice and Burano - all well
illustrated.

For those with some experience making needle lace, and those interested in
colorful laces. Makers may need to work under magnification, because the
lace stitches are tiny - like the originals. Amply illustrated in color,
with many drawings and photos.

Traditionally, this lace was made with white thread. This book offers
contemporary patterns and ideas for using color. Therefore, perfect for
making one-of-a-kind needle laces.

Silk and cotton thread options given are Aurifil, DMC, Phenix, Sajou, and
Valdani.

Twenty-two Technique pages from which to practice: Several leaves with
different fillings. These leaves can be used after completion, so your time
is well-spent.

Thirty Designs to stitch, with detailed instructions - mostly flowers and
butterflies. Suitable for sewing onto clothing, hats, etc. Framed pieces.
Jewelry - pins, earrings, a bracelet. Two sets of earrings; each set has
two possible designs (for example, 2 different orchids).

The reviewer is an experienced embroiderer and embroidery teacher. If you
have never made needle lace (using variations of buttonhole stitch),
enlarge the pattern and practice using larger thread. Stitching with the eye
end of the threaded needle prevents piercing surrounding threads with the
point and yields a crisper appearance. It is also nice to consult other
needle lace books to see if a different way of illustrating stitches is
helpful.
I found the illustrations wonderful, but if you get stuck on a tiny
detail - this is how to work your way out of puzzlement.

For your convenience, the following Specialty Book Suppliers have been
verified. Please tell them you heard about the book from this Arachne book
review.

[lace] Venetian Lace article in PieceWork Magazine, May-June 2014

2014-05-01 Thread Jeriames
To supplement the book review just sent to Arachne, Venice Needle Lace
Today, I have copied an article in the new May/June 2014 PieceWork issue,
and placed it in the book.

Invisible Lacemakers - The Needlework of Venetian Nuns, by Isabella
Campagnol, tells in two pages about Venetian nuns and historic writings in the
1500's and 1600's about needy girls and women living in hospitali and
nunneries. The lacemaking, sewing, embroidering and weaving they did
supported
them in the places where they lived and some money was set aside for
dowries, if they wished to marry.

I have ordered the 160-page Hardback book by Campagnol, Forbidden
Fashions - Invisible Luxuries in Early Venetian Convents, published by Texas
Tech
University Press, on sale for $27.96. It is briefly announced on page 64
of PieceWork, with a price of $34.95. It is also available as an e-book.
http://ttupress.org/books/forbidden-fashions

This book received support from the Costume Society of America. If there
is interesting lace content, it will be reviewed for Arachne members,
though it seems few are interested in lace history.
