[lace] I need a "Biblical Quotation" bobbin picture ... please.

2016-06-10 Thread Brian Lemin
Hello friends,

It has been so nice to receive your support following my note to you all.

One person has volunteered to edit and chase me up to complete the
"Dictionary" so today I am working on it.

My original intention was to publish it in the normal way, but a better way
would be to put it into the Public Domain on the internet and I am very
comfortable with that. This means I can illustrate the dictionary to a much
greater extent as I do not have to worry about publishing costs!

Yes I have hundreds of bobbins illustrated but not one with a Biblical
inscription. something like "Thou shat not steal" or the myriads of other
inscriptions there are from the Bible.

Is anyone willing to send me a picture of such a bobbin .. P L E A S E ?
:)

Sharp focus is the main requirement as I can pretty well do the rest in
Photoshop. Good light is a help. Reasonably high number of pixels but not a
huge number. Size.. I usually start with about 6 inches in length. I am
thinking even a good quality mobile phone pic might do the job. [ I have
never experimented with that] Get reasonably close say 12 to 20 inches.
Yes, most of the inscription should be showing, but that might not be
totally possible.

Can you help? Thank you.

I suspect I will be making other requests as I go through. I am up to the
"Bs". I hope the list might be able to help!

Oh yes, you should know it will sometime be on the internet. "Arachne" has
a general acknowledgement, I am only acknowledging individuals who have
donated their collections to me (Digital) I hope this does not sound too
mean.

Thanks again

I think Aurifil #50 is a good substitution. It comes in beautiful colors.

This particular supplier is American, but I think the thread is Italian, so
it should be available from a nearer source.

Grenadine cloth is loosely woven, but the thread used for the weaving is
highly twisted.

According to Wiki Alaise is "one of the most important markets for raw silk
 and cocoons
 in the south of France"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al%C3%A8s

which suggests that cocoons and grey-state silk fibres were imported into
Alais from the east rather than being where the silk moths were cultivated.
The reeling and spinning of the thread and weaving would have been done in
Alais

Grenadine thread is highly twisted, that’s what gives it the matte
appearance. Used to make closely woven fabric it would make a crepe fabric.

Grenadine lacemaking thread is available from Bart & Francis in Belgium
http://www.bart-francis.be/index.php?item=silkorganza--grenadine--superia
=page_id=18=EN

about ⅔ of the way down the page.

Hi every one. I want to explain that our site Bigginslace.co.uk is back and is
not hacked. Google don't like we have moved to EKM and we don't understand the
instructions to remove it. I am sorry I rejoined too later for the bookmark
event. I love bookmarks and will certainly join the next event. Vivienne

2016-06-10 Thread Judith Smith
Natalie,
You provided a delightful topic to accompany my morning tea.

A search on "silk d'alais" provided some interesting results.
Google Books has a report of the House of Commons on the silk industry of
France.

https://books.google.com/books?id=JyJDcAAJ=RA1-PA27=myHOSd5jC6=silk%20d'Alais=RA1-PA27#v=onepage=silk%20d'Alais=false

Alais is a place. And from the above, it apparently has a system of measure
that was used in the silk production. In "poids d'Alais" (Alais pounds used
for raw silk) 240 pounds make a kilogram.
The report was a fascinating time machine into the 1830's.

>From other sources "grenadine d'alais" is the black silk used for Chantilly
lace. It has a loose weave and is of a dull appearance rather than shiny.

[lace] Chantilly lace: Grenadine d'Alais

2016-06-10 Thread Nathalie
Dearest lace lovers,

Chantilly lace is made of Grenadine d'Alais.
There are many descriptions of the thread, the material itself.

But I wonder what exactly is grenadine?
Is Alais the place where the silk is made or dyed?

I hope someone has the answer on these questions.

Thank you in advance for your time.
