[lace] getting excited

2017-06-06 Thread Jenny Brandis
G'day from a sunny Western Australia

This is just an update for those of you who are awaiting the 2017 Arachne
Bookmark website to get online. It is almost there with just 16 scans to
come. I must admit I am getting excited with receiving all the scans/photos
as there is (as always) a lovely selection of bookmarks to view.

If you have not got around to sending me your bookmark scan/photo and
details before you sent it off, please send me the details and ask your
partner to send a scan/photo to me so that we can all enjoy this wonderful
experience.

In the meantime, wander on over to the site
  and meander around the past
years works, it is inspiring to view such a diverse range of lace work, in
fact getting this year's bookmark section organised has got my brain ticking
over what I will be making for the Card exchange later this year.

Hugs

Hi all I remember a conversation a while ago about beginners patterns.
someone mentioned a website, I think, Alex Stillwell. I bookmarked it but
when my computer crashed I lost everything and I can't now find it.

There was a simple fish pattern. My 5 year old grandson is fascinated by
my lace stuff and I have promised to let him make something in the summer
holidays. So if someone could please send me in the right direction I'd be
very happy.

Hello Jean,

In Amsterdam there are several lace groups, about 4. My group “t
Aemstelkant’ meets every first Tuesday of the month. We start again in
September.
More information on my website http://www.kloskant.com/aemstelkant.html

Near Utrecht is also a lace group De Waaier. They meet 4 times a year on a
Saturday. More information on their website http://www.kantkringdewaaier.nl
.
Both sites are in Dutch. But no doubt there will be also members who speak
dutch.

I think in both cities are also courses in bobbin lace. When you or you
student need more information, please contact me.

Happy lacing,

Congratulations on this publication Karen! I inspected it at

available through their dot-ca but I will watch for it.

[lace] Book on the Ipswich Samples from 1789-1790

2017-06-06 Thread Karen Thompson
The samples of black silk lace edgings made in Ipswich, Massachusetts, in
1789-1790 are finally available to all lace makers and historians.
"THE LACE SAMPLES FROM IPSWICH, MASSACHUSETTS, 1789-1790. Patterns and
Working Diagrams for 22 Lace Samples Preserved at the Library of Congress"
ISBN 978-0-9990385-0-5, by Karen H. Thompson is now in print!!
Over the last many years I have been working on and off reconstructing
these wonderful samples, and have now made the complete set available in a
book format for everybody to enjoy. The soft-cover book has a short
introductory history, building on Marta Cotterell's Ipswich book from 2003.
A few pages are dedicated to basic technical information, including the key
to the color-coded diagrams. The main section is the patterns. Each pattern
has 2 facing pages with an image of the original sample, the reconstructed
sample, the color-coded diagram and the the full-size pricking. The
pricking is located close to the edge of the page, so it can be copied (for
personal use only, please). A couple of the more complicated patterns has 2
extra pages with detailed diagrams. The book is available through Amazon,
both in the US and on other continents. It retails for $24, or the
equivalent in other currencies. You will be able to preview several pages
on the Amazon site. At the IOLI Convention in Philadelphia July 16-22, 2017
the book will be available from Holly Van Sciver and Maria Provencher, and
by pre-order from me directly, as long as I receive the order before July
1. Please contact me privately.
It is my great hope my many long hours with this project will be of benefit
and pleasure to the lace community.

Re: [lace] Did anybody get my email

2017-06-06 Thread Adele Shaak
Yes, I got it. Thanks for sending the original message; it’s good to hear
different people’s opinions of a new book.

I know there’s a whole Yahoo/AOL thing that stops people’s messages being seen.
I have the same result from a problem with Apple’s iMail program and how it
handles multiple e-mail addresses. Just in case there are others on the List
who don’t see their messages but can’t figure out why, I’ll tell my story:

I have a second e-mail address on iCloud, for business. iMail prefers to send
from that address, and it will put my iCloud address in the “From” box - even
when I am replying to a message sent to me on my home email. Then my message
will be refused by the Arachne software because I’m not subscribed under my
business e-mail addy. So I have to remember to check my From box with every
message I send.

[lace] Fwd: Authentic Handmade Laces for Sale - England

2017-06-06 Thread Clare Lewis
Hello all,

Currently The Lace Guild has a number of lace collars and cuffs for sale,
donated by the estate of one of our volunteers, Pauline (who was
affectionately known as Auntie Wainwright for her marvellous efforts
running the second hand stall at Convention). These are predominately Beds
but there are a few Maltese as well

The collars and cuffs have been on their travels to Camarinas, Krakovany
and Dorset but will be back at The Hollies from mid-July. Please see the
website ( laceguild.org ) for opening times and how to find us.

The Hollies always has other items of lace and lace equipment for sale,
pre-loved items which have been donated, as well as new stock and you will
also be able to see the latest exhibition in the exhibition room while you
are there.

As an aside while you are at The Hollies it is worth popping up the road to
the Red House Glass Cone (about a quarter of a mile away) to see the glass
display, including what looks like a pair of billowing lace curtains which
are made of glass.

[lace] Authentic Handmade Laces for Sale - Hungary

2017-06-06 Thread Jeriames
Kiskunhalas Hungary is famous for the Lace House - Lace Museum where the
Queen of Laces - Halas - is beautifully exhibited. Visitors may look
through a window and watch women making this famous needle lace. Tiny perfect
laces are made to insert in pins and pendants. They also make small doilies,
and other specialties. Perhaps the best known are a selection of
butterflies. Americans measure in inches. From wing-tip to wing-tip my
smallest
butterfly measures 1"; the largest is 5 3/4". To avoid loss of these filmy
laces, all my in-between-sized butterflies are confined under glass - in
frames - hung on my library's walls.

A selection of lace is available in the Museum's gift shop. When a piece
of lace is ordered in Budapest, the lace is so valuable that a lacemaker
may take the pokey local train to the city and deliver it in person. Too
many pieces of lace have been "lost" in the mail. Perhaps, "stolen".

Halas lace that is not sold in Kiskunhalas is sold only in very elite
shops in Budapest where costly jewelry shares the display cases. We must
remember that the armies of Germany and Russia destroyed nearly everything of
value in Hungary in 20th Century wars. It is possible to see the scars of
war on buildings that are still lived in. The chances of being able to buy
an old piece of this lace made before World War I is nearly impossible.
Most was lost. It is so very valued by Hungarians that such pieces are kept
in families and passed from generation to generation.

There is a book Halas Lace by Laszlo Emoke, (English/Hungarian/German)
that can be used as a catalog from which to order Halas laces. Each
photographed lace is numbered, so they know exactly what you want. This book
also
gives the history of Halas lace, which first surfaced in 1902.

You may have seen little tags attached to old laces that identified where
they were made. However, most of these have been removed. Kiskunhalas,
which translates to 3 fish and is a reference to 3 small bodies of water in
the town, is different. The lacemakers actually use their needles to stitch
the trademark of their laces on each piece. This is the image of 3
crossed fish.

Anyone not associated with official lace manufactured in Kiskunhalas who
has learned to make this lace should never put the trademark on their laces.
If displayed, it should be labeled something like "In the style of Halas
Lace".

Kiskunhalas can be reached by motor vehicle or by train. It is best to
have someone with you who has a knowledge of Hungarian, because signs are not
in English. When traveling around Hungary, if you wish to ask a question,
pose it to someone under the age of 40, who probably learned English in
school. It is easier to communicate in Eastern Europe than in several
nations in Southern Europe.
