[lace] Typing and Magazines

2018-05-09 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti.
I have the Digest form of Arachne, and I see Devon’s message there twice –
but Interestingly, the first one has the 2 paragraphs together, and the 2nd
one has a double lin space between the 2 paragraphs!!

Work that out! :)

Many of the emails – especially Jeri’s have odd hieroglyphics when
apostrophise etc. are used.

I received my UK Lace Magazine this morning. Great!! Now I have some more good
reading for this evening!! On the first page is a photo of an Early Lace in
gold & silver, with spangles. Well, I have that pattern on my pillow at the
moment, but mine looks very much the Poor relation, as I am working it in
white cotton thread, , as I plan to make just enough to fold over, gather at
the fold, and use as a Jabot on a blouse!! I have stitched an Early Lace –
a pointy edge from the Rosemary Shepherd Early Lace book around the edge of
the collar, - as that piece Must have been the edge for a Ruff!!
Last time I wore the blouse – to a Lace Day, I used a set of 3 very small
knotted lace-edged doilies, folded and pinned on to form a jabot.

Well – what else do you do with little doilies but wear them?! :)

Regards from Liz. in chilly Melbourne, Oz.

Re: [lace] Single space between sentences; avoid quotations/apostrophes

2018-05-09 Thread Liz Roberts
I was taught in typing class many years ago to put two spaces after periods and
other punctuation as well. I only learned of the new trend of one space in the
last few years when I began to attend groups for writers. It took some
retraining, but now I prefer the one space as it's one less tap of a key. Lazy
me. Haha

I agree a person should just do what they are used to when it comes to emails
and social media. It's only when one plans to publish that this might become an
issue. It's not like there are space police out there hanging around with the
lace police to come down on offenders.

[lace] Lace Demo at Yale Center for British Art, May 18, 2018

2018-05-09 Thread Jeri Ames
In case there are lace makers within reach of New Haven Connecticut who do not
belong to the New England Lace group, I am including below a message members
of the NELG received. It has been approved for sharing by Elena (an Arachne
member, and presenter of this program at Yale) for sharing with Arachne
members. For those of you who have not met her, see the photo on page 39 of
your just-received IOLI Bulletin - with the Flying Mosque on the cover.

Elena says: We are very excited about the event and will be sharing pictures
for those who can't attend. If anyone who is unable to attend my workshop is
interested in taking a class, I will give them the information!

Following is summary of announcement Jeri received from Jill Hawkins of
NELG, without quotation marks:

I have just been made aware of a workshop that is being offered by the Yale
Center for British Art in New Haven, Connecticut on Friday morning, May
18. During this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to explore
representations of lace in the Center’s collections and observe the process
of making handmade lace.

The museum has invited a lace maker from the Brooklyn Lace Guild to
demonstrate how lace is made; please register on the Center's website. I would
like the public to know that there is a very active lace community in New
England and that travel to NYC is not required if they want to learn.

More information can be found on the Center(s) website:
https://britishart.yale.edu/event/lace-unveiled-workshop

Once you have viewed the site above, you will understand why I (Jeri) wrote to
Elena about a book I reviewed in 2013: In fine Style - The Art of Tudor and
Stuart Fashion, by Anna Reynolds. It was ordered by quite a few Arachne
members, and all seemed very pleased with it.  Lace content.

Following my private note to Elena, here is what she replied:

Jeri, it's a lovely coincidence that you share Anna Reynolds' book - she is
the current fellow at the Costume Institute and I recently consulted with her
to identify lace in the John Singer Sargeant portraits she is researching. She
gave a fascinating talk that Devon and I attended as well. I have perused her
book but I don't have a copy yet - I will have to add it to my wishlist!

The above is an illustration of how one of you might take over some lace news
reporting, so I can cut back.  To be relevant, news like the above needs to
get to Arachne members in a timely manner.

2018-05-09 Thread Bev Walker
Confessions of another old typist... I didn't find it difficult to change
space-space after full-stop to one space. Think of the finger strokes
saved! I had a situation as Adele mentioned, and that was a convincing
reason especially as putting two spaces after the full-stop changed the
desired paragraph format in an ugly way.
Lace content: It was a challenge to overcome, just like some aspects of
lacemaking.

This article discussing the science behind one or two spaces after the full
stop is amusing. Spoiler: Two spaces gets the nod .

I agree, habits of 50 odd years are very hard to break and I, for one,
will continue with double spacing no matter the software gurus.

Now I'll get down from my soapbox.

thank goodness if we create a manuscript on a computer, we have "replace"
and can just type our usual way and then replace removing the second space
in bulk format. i, too, learned on a manual typewriter way back when and
so am happy with my two spaces. if i miss one, i go back and fix it. LOL.

Re: [lace] Single space between sentences; avoid quotations/apostrophes

2018-05-09 Thread Adele Shaak
With typewriters, daisy-wheel printers, and the other early technologies, each
letter had to be given the same amount of space on the page. Two spaces after
the period helped readers understand that a new sentence had begun, and so
that was considered a good typing habit. However, when digital printers became
available people could use good-looking fonts that had proportional spacing,
and the double space was no longer necessary.

How the double space progressed from 'not necessary' to ‘wrong’ I’m not
sure, but I do know authors who have had to go through their 100,000 word
manuscripts and take out every extra space. So, go ahead and put in the two
spaces (it is difficult to change your typing habits) but if you ever want to
write for publication you should just use the one.

Adele
PS: I don’t do not think I should have to avoid apostrophes just to pander
to some stupid software developer who didn’t did not allow for them. :-)

Me too Jeri, I have been double spacing (as I was taught at Commercial school)

When did the single spacing come in? I shall continue to double space as was
taught, it looks better to me. How can you understand the meaning without
apostrophes etc. It just doesn't make sense to me.

[lace] Single space between sentences; avoid quotations/apostrophes

2018-05-09 Thread Jeri Ames
There are interesting problems. Tess told me last week that I should single
space at ends of sentences. I have been touch typing 65 plus years. Double
spacing is automatic. Will try to remember, but it looks weird.

Also, I noticed a while ago that the quotation/apostrophe key seems to result
in a bunch of black diamonds in messages, so am trying to use a dash to set
off book titles and spell out words instead of using apostrophes. Some will
slip through, but please know that I know, and am trying.

Please know that I also have a list of gmail users that I send blind carbon
copies to because not all gmail users  receive my postings. If you have this
problem, and wish to be on the bcc list, please write to me privately. It is
how I now make sure Devon, Karen T., Lorelei H., Jean Leader and others
receive mail from me.

It takes a lot longer to communicate, but the key word is communicate, is it
not?
