Re: [lace] early youtube of bobbin and/or needle lacemaking

2018-07-16 Thread Adele Shaak
The Youtube films of lacemaking seem to all date from 1929-1931.

This one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jf9pmm7Yk78
 shows an elderly woman making
tamboured lace. In the last part, you can clearly see, not only the hand on
top of the fabric, but how her hand is working beneath the fabric to feed the
thread onto the hook. From her speed and age I would suspect she was trained
to make it commercially in the late 1800s/early 1900s.

Or if you want your viewers to experience the pure soulless monotony and hard
work of the industrial lace mills, they could watch this one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jf9pmm7Yk78
  which shows Nottingham lace
being made.

Both of these are silent films; the Nottingham one has subtitles.

And of course the one of the elderly bobbin lacemaker on her gigantic pillow
has recently been discussed - it’s at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwcSaAXtZsc
  From her speed, dexterity, and
apparent age, probably she, too, made lace (by hand) commercially in the late
1800s/early 1900s.

Hi Devon

There are a couple of Pathe News videos on YouTube. This one is bobbin
lace making from 1931: http://www.britishpathe.com/video/lace-of-long-ago.
Here is one from 1929 that shows tambour lace:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jf9pmm7Yk78.
Not sure how you would get a license to use them.

The Hunterdon Art Museum which is putting on Lace, not Lace, has
recently been using QR codes on their labels so that people may put
their phones up to the code, and then see a video or youtube on the
phone. This is a really nice feature and is often used to show the
artist's process. I was discussing this with my husband the other
night, and he suggested that it would be interesting to connect to a
video of lacemaking (bobbin or needle) from the late 19th or early
20th century, just to give people the flavor of what it was like when
it was still being practiced commercially. Does anyone know of such a
video? Do we know what is the earliest film of lacemaking?

Re: [lace] IOLI Handbook

2018-07-16 Thread Jeri Ames
Dear Susie,

Agreed.  There is too much personal information in the Handbook for it to be
accessed by computer, even by members.

Some people share computers with family (all ages and agendas), and some use
computers at work or in libraries and schools. It is too easy to
absent-mindedly leave a computer on when one leaves a desk, or even when
traveling.

The printed handbook is indispensable for privately contacting other members,
so serves a valuable function.  Keep it in a safe place.  SHRED, when it
become obsolete.   "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

As Susie said, everyone is able to refuse to have their information in the
printed Handbook.

Re: [lace] IOLI Bulletin

2018-07-16 Thread Clare Lewis
Further to Jane's email regarding The Lace Guild electronic membership,
e-Lace is not sent as a pdf, there is an e-members only section of the
website where the e-magazine is accessed.

I would echo Jane's call for patterns, articles, photos etc., etc.;
publications can't survive without them.

One area we do often have a problem with is items for the Young Lacemaker
magazine; while the readers may be young (mostly) they are not necessarily
beginners. More challenging patterns with a 'trendy' (or whatever the
current terminology is) theme and application are always welcome.
