Re: [lace] Re:Mrs. Treadwin

2019-10-11 Thread Jane Partridge
I've got my copy with me here in North Wales as it's a good reference for
needlelace stitches. (I'm running a Lacemaking Weekend as a fundraiser for the
preserved railway where I volunteer tomorrow and Sunday).

First published in 1874, reprinted by Lacet Publications in 1994. ISBN 1 874688
05 2

The Antique Point she included was Branscombe Point, not Battenberg, Jane :-)

The book also has instructions for making Honiton (bobbin) lace, some history
and how to care for lace (though the methods would probably raise eyebrows now).

Hi, Mrs. Treadwin wrote a book titled Antique Point and Honiton Lace. The
Antique Point is the Battenberg I make today, the Honiton is bobbin lace.
(snip).
I can't find my copy of her book at the moment so I can't give you the
details on that. Very good for braid lace.

Dear Louise
Thank you very much for that.
I must confess a little disappointment that there wasn’t more info but I guess
Prince Albert wasn’t to know I’d be searching a hundred and sixty odd years
later!
Now I wonder where Thomas Wright got the information for his book - maybe from
a local Olney source.
Regards
Diana

Oops can't see for looking. 'Lace pillow with lace in progress employing

Re: [lace] 1851 Great Exhibition catalogue

2019-10-11 Thread Louise Bailey
Dear all,

Brian posted the link to the 'short version' for use while walking around the
exhibition. As Diana says there were five volumes of the 'Official descriptive
and illustrated catalogue of the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of
All Nations, 1851.'

https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/001511517

V2 contains Section III Class 19 TAPESTRY, CARPETS, FLOOR-CLOTHS, LACE AND
EMBROIDERY, and the following class 20. ARTICLES OF CLOTHING, FOR
IMMEDIATE, PERSONAL OR DOMESTIC USE.

These start at about p100 for the digitised version, p560 of the original
printed book. No obvious mention of a demonstrator with her pillow.

Other volumes might list bobbin manufacturers, lace machines such as Levers
are in an earlier class.
