[lace] Lace websites
Hello All, Some time ago there was a discussion here about how we all could contribute to the list. I am so grateful for the lacemaking friends that I got through Arachne and would like very much to do something in return. The best I can think of is to share my list of favourite bobbin lace websites. I already sent it to Laurie Waters and as she found it useful for her Pinterest site maybe it would be interesting for others too. Many of the sites are well known, but there are also some that may be new to you. The list is a very simple Word document and includes 550 sites at the moment. You can use the list in any way you like, all I want is for people to enjoy these sites as much as I do. If you email me privately I will be happy to send it. [lace] Copyright
Hello All, Copyright is very important and I do not use copied patterns unless I own the original, but I think in Denmark they are going a little too far. The Danish lace association Knipling i Danmark no longer allows members to borrow from their library. Members may now only read the books and magazines when they visit the library. I was told that the Danish Culture Board does not allow the association to lend magazines and books out unless there is a written permission from the author or publisher. The lawyers they asked in this matter say their lending is letting because the association requires a membership fee for their members. The association says it is too much work to get a permission from all authors and publishers and although at least some magazine publishers allow lending, the association decided to not allow anyone to borrow anything in order not to break the law. Postage is very expensive, so I seldom borrow from the association myself, but sometimes it would be interesting to see a book before I decide if I want to buy it or not. Borrowing a book does not mean that I will make copies from it! What is your opinion on this? Are there any other lace associations that interprets the law like this? Sorry about this. I use Windows Live Mail 2011, not Outlook. I have now changed from Comic Sans to Arial, maybe that will help? And I will stop using apostrophes! [lace] Raffle for stamp collectors
I have already received many replies to my raffle. Some of you have asked how they can pay for the postage. I'm sure that wouldn't be any problem since there are many ways. Payment through PayPal would be fine or cash in a letter, any currency. Of course an exchange of something lace related would be nice too, for example lacemaker postcards, bobbins etc. International reply coupons aren't sold in Sweden any more but I think I can use foreign ones. However I can't accept checks or money orders since the bank fees are too high. Shipping cost for FDC + postcard would be 2.70 USD within Europe and 3.40 USD to the rest of the world. (Since you can't send coins in a letter 3 USD would be fine if you send cash.) Converted into Euro it would be 2.15 Euro within Europe and 2.70 Euro to the rest of the world. I really enjoy to share these duplicates of FDCs and postcards and I hope you understand that it would be too expensive for me if I should pay the postage for 12 letters myself. [lace] Laminated prickings
Thank you for your replies to my message, both on and off the list. It was interesting to read your opinions. So far I have only used laminated prickings for patterns where the pins are far apart and I feel I am more accurate when I place the pins while working than when I preprick. But I agree with those of you who recommended prepricking patterns where the pin holes are closer. When I used cardboard+blue plastic I had to preprick because the cardboard we use in Sweden is very thick. My laminating machine uses heat (sorry I don't know the expression in English) and I use pouches of 100 micron. Pouches of 125 micron would be too thick I think. I paid only about 38 USD for the machine and it has worked very well. As I wrote the shine doesn't disturb me, but if it does in future I will try using steel wool or a pot scourer. I always copy from books using my scanner which is usually better quality than a photo copy. I am surprised to hear that a laminated sheet could come apart after cutting. My laminant sticks to the paper as well. The quality of my laminated prickings is good enough for reuse, just like cardboard prickings. I feel the laminated prickings are much more neat to work on and to keep than the cardboard ones. And the sticky feeling when putting a pin through the blue plastic is gone. I have been very doubtful about laminated prickings before, but now that I have tried it I love them! [lace] Laminated prickings
Hello all, Until recently I always used cardboard and blue plastic for my photo copied prickings from books, but now I have bought a cheap laminating machine and copy on light blue paper instead and laminate the copy. It's much better than I thought and I'm very satisfied with the quality. I don't need to preprick before I use it, which saves a lot of time. Is there any problem with laminated prickings that I haven't yet discovered? They are a little shiny but if I adjust the lamp that doesn't disturb me. Do you use it also for fine lace like Bucks Point and Tønder? It would be interesting to hear what your experiences are with laminated prickings. [lace] 3D lace flower
I have got several replies to my inquiry about the pattern for a 3D lace flower, but it hasn't been found yet. Since so many of you also like it I will continue to look for it and I have put my photo at the Arachne website: http://www.webshots.com/homepage.html Username: Arachne2003, Password: honiton So far these books have been looked through by kind Arachne members: Fantasy Flowers in Bobbin Lace - Pat and Brian Flowers and Butterflies in 3D Lace - Dorothy K Cox Plants and Flowers in Lace - Bridget M Cook Bobbin Lace Fantasy Flowers - Rosemary Shepherd Lace Flowers - Joyce R Wilmot Floribana - Anny Noben-Slegers Roses in Bobbin Lace - Eeva-Liisa Kortelahti Design Techniques for Modern Lace - Veronica Sorenson Creative Lace Patterns - Valerie Paton I now know at which vendor in Tønder I photographed the flower and e-mailed her yesterday. She still isn't of much help, but says the pattern is from an English book (not American) and she made the flower at least 20 years ago. She says she changed the pattern a little because in the book every other petal was worked in half stitch alternately whole stitch. The flower was worked in a spiral and first she made the three inner petals, starched them, removed the pins and started to work the fourth petal on the pattern of the first, just a little bigger etc. The pattern was damaged by so much starch and she hasn't kept it and can't make a copy. A couple of years ago I was given a black and white picture of a flower that looks exactly the same and ever since then I hoped to find the pattern somewhere and was very pleased when I saw the flower in Tønder - until I heard she didn't know either where it came from.
