Please remember, this is an *International* list. What is available in Europe may not be available in Australia, for example. The book is out-of-print, but you can probably find a copy by working with an independent book dealer. In this case, there are some downloadable prickings if you look at the options at the bottom of each page.. Click on Lace Prickings at the far right. Re: [lace] Thread Identification
Thank you Brenda, There is no label. The 'cone' is a plastic cyclinder and is not smooth. It is about 5 inches in diameter and the thread is ecru. It was purchased from a discount yarn shop in the sixties. I have used it to make samples of edgings when I first started lace making in the nineties. It has a stiffness to it that makes me think it is linen. It is still very stong and I would like to use it for a table cloth edging and was curious. I will try washing a piece first. Original Message - From: Tatman [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Lace list lace@arachne.com Sent: Wednesday, December 05, 2007 9:03 AM Subject: [lace] Re: block pillows and BL scarves I had good intentions of making a scarf from lace weight yarn. I picked out this soft fuzzy yarn to lace with. But instead I turned it into a cover for a pouch and gave it to a friend. I added beads on the tail ends instead of working them in. Makes for good dangles. I then applied it to some complimentary wool fabric. Here are some pics she took of the pouch/purse I made her: http://bp3.blogger.com/_gmukDyOE-lQ/RucWZqtsiyI/AMs/4WZEHHPwMdk/s160 0-h/DSCF0187b.JPG http://bp3.blogger.com/_gmukDyOE-lQ/RucVxqtsixI/AMk/lBniUiXubRU/s160 0-h/DSCF0188b.JPG I made my own large roller pillow out of a hard tube that used to have fabric rolled on it. I work in a band uniform manufacturing company that throws out these 6 foot empty cardboard tubes(one of these days I will make a 6 foot roller pillow!! HAH). So I make use of them and have used them for the inside part of small and large roller pillows. I then wrap layers of wool fabric and then finally a dense insulation foam. Then the two cloth covers. Works like a charm! The bobbins I used for making this scarf turned into purse/pouch were the big bobbins you get in the kit from Hell. I sure could use more of those if I was to make a wider scarf. If you have any you want to get rid of, I have a good home for them ;) Someday I will actually make some scarves for gifts. Intentions are good, but is one of those round tuits! I have two sessions of two hours to use. I plan to have a pillow for each one, and most of the bobbins wound. At this moment, I'm thinking about using the Springett snake pattern. I think it can be done in the time available. Each girl will have to wind one or two pairs of bobbins to understand the process, but we won't have time for them to wind all of them. The patterns will be on the pillows. We'll only deal with the cloth stitch and the single twist. I have commandeered my lace friend to assist, so there will be two of use to guide the 7 girls and their leader. (I'll have her make one, also.) My question is: Does anyone know of a better pattern than the Snake for a quickie sampler project? I haven't had time to search through my books since I agreed to do these lessons next month. If these girls really enjoy bobbin lace, I'll give them more instruction later. They have been doing spinning, weaving and knitting this year. A nationally known native Indian basket maker is scheduled to give them some basket weaving lessons. (We are very near an Indian Reservation with many skilled people.) They plan to do embroidery and crochet later. The leader wants them to explore a wide range of textile arts. I wanted bobbin lace to be included, so became involved.
