Re: [lace] Re bookmark exchange

2016-06-17 Thread Meghann McCrory
Hello -

I received a gorgeous tatted bookmark from Shirley and it is a treasure!

And I've just received an intricate and delicate bookmark from Malvary. It
is an inspiration as I am a beginner with my bobbins purchased at the
Kantcentrum last summer.

Thank you to both of you for being kind about my humble beginning efforts!
And thank you to the organizers!

Re: [lace] Lace Museums

2015-04-08 Thread Meghann McCrory
Wow - I just checked my email and yes I just want to write quickly with a
huge thank you to all who have made suggestions! I am like Barbara - here
in hot dry Southern California - Los Angeles to be exact. Barbara where
are you?

I am reading through your emails and taking notes as well - my mom and I
are already trying to figure out how to visit the Lace Guild.

We are in the planning stages still and want to accommodate as many of
these suggestions as we can. I know for sure we will be in London for
several days, Brussels for several days, Milan for the World Expo, Venice
for the Biennale and in Croatia for four days or so. I know it's all short
- but coming from the west coast of the US we want to see a little bit of
everything. I wish it could be a three month trip. We are planning for
about three weeks. ;)

And, indeed, what a wonderful community this is - thank you!

Just want to thank you all for the fascinating discussion of lace museums.
I have had the joy of visiting a number of these places and am looking
forward to trip late spring to England so I have been furiously taking
notes. What a wonderful community this is!

[lace] Trip to Europe - lace museums/centers to visit?

2015-04-07 Thread Meghann McCrory
Hi all,

I'm planning a trip to Europe (with mom) partly to see some of the lace
making towns and museums. We will be in London, Belgium, Italy, and
Croatia. As for Croatia I know Pag and Hvar are major lace centers -
though Pag has a reputation as a party city - and I'm hoping Hvar is a bit
quieter. Anyone know? Are there demonstrations or archives there that are
accessible?

We are certainly visiting the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Are
there other museums or smaller collections in any of those countries that
you would suggest? I would really love to see some historical examples as
well as current lace making. I know it's a very touristy thing to do/see
in some of these places, so any advice about how to see the more authentic
side of things would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance!
Meghann

[lace] Quote about needle lace - looking for a book

2015-03-10 Thread Meghann McCrory
Hello -
I have not posted before but am grateful for this resource as an artist who
studies lace and weaving.

In doing some research, at some point I came across a book about lace
making that was (I think) quite old - early 20th century or even late 19th
century - I believe it was written by a woman. The preface of the book was
an amazing defense of the importance of the needle. She writes that the
needle is better (or maybe stronger?) than the sword as it creates and does
not destroy and almost issues a charge to lay down arms in favor of the
weaving arts.

I have searched and searched for this quote and found similar statements
but am looking specifically for this preface, and the larger quote.

I know this is a long shot but thought that on the slim chance someone here
knows this book, it would be worth a try given how much knowledge and
experience among the members here.

Thank you!
Meghann M.
