Re: [lace] Lace at the Art Center, WI

2007-04-01 Thread Needlelace
Hello Everyone and Janice,
I too was disappointed more lace made by lacemakers was not included in the
exhibit.
By the time I had heard about the exhibit, space and lace had been pretty
much decided. So, my influence was minimal.
Still... it is a nice exhibit...

Whenever I have made a lace garter I measure the thigh and make the lace
2.5-3 times the thigh length... depends how much gathering I want.

2006-04-19 Thread Needlelace
Hello everyone.
Occasionally I have spiders on my ceilings, when this occurs I must get a
stepstool and hope I can reach the little guy and catch it without marking up
my ceiling. I know I could just leave it alone, but my dislike for spiders
prevents that from occurring grew up with too many stories of elderly
ladies
and spiders roaming in their hair

[lace] table runner - IOLI

2005-08-25 Thread Needlelace
Gentle Spiders,
Let’s not get stuck on a label for the contest, and look at all the
possibilities! Whether the lace is used on a table, mantel or wall hanging…
the
important thing is that the lace is an expression of joy in the art of
lacemaking.

All the edges must be finished… it cannot be assumed folks will finish all
the edges – someone could just cut off some yardage; giving the same
consideration to such a piece of lace would not be fair to the folks who did
finish
off the edges.
Symmetrical– Only if the lace maker wants it to be. (That word is not
anywhere in the contest rules.) I envision the needle lacers having fun with
floral
designs - can’t you just see some of the lovely point de gaze motifs from
Irma Osterman’s vest as a table ribbon? What if she were to embellish it
with
beads or wire? Wow!!!(The thread could be as heavy as the time desired to
complete the ribbon.) Floral point ground lace would be a wonderful contest
idea (pearl beads for the center of the flowers), h the ideas For
folks
who don’t like a lot of pairs, Milanese or Schneeburger would be fun. (An
undulating trail could make the ribbon vary in width from 3.5-5 inches. Add
some glittering threads – yum!) Of course for the torchon, tambour, filet
and
caricamacross folks, the sky is the limit too!
For the Binche, Flanders folks … have you seen Ulrike Löhr’s latest
book,
Dick durch Dünn? I thought the contest idea was original and yet
Ulrike’s
entire book fits the contest. I was shocked. Did Ulrike read my mind?
Consilience?
Making lace is a beautiful, creative endeavor. Why else are we engaged in
this activity?
The contest rules should be thought of as an outline that serves to
stimulate the creative energies of the lacemaker.
There are no design preconceptions to this contest – including any existing
piece of lace.
If anyone has any questions, please direct them to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

get over here to Arachne very often right now.
I look forward to hearing from you!

[lace] IOLI lace contest rules from the contest chair

2005-08-16 Thread Needlelace
Hello Gentle spiders,
I have received questions regarding the IOLI contest. For clarification here
are the rules.
Hope this helps. I will not be back to arachne for a couple of weeks. I have
been busy with company since the convention and I am so far behind. (Timing
was not ideal, but it sure was nice seeing old friends.) If any one has any
questions write me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED])

2006 I.O.L.I. Lace Contest:
In honor of the 2006 convention theme: Dentelle et Arts de la Table/ Lace
and the Art of Table Dressing, the 2006 contest theme will be: Feast for the
Eyes.
Flowered or geometric, traditional or modern, colorful or subdued: what is
the feast for your eyes?
With the passage of time, precious moments of family gatherings and holiday
joy can fade. An item - a table ribbon - may serve as a visual, tactile
reminder of these events, a symbol of past cherished family memories. The
tradition of a lace ribbon at holidays may preserve special moments in ways a
picture
might never do.
The contest: Table ribbon 35 to 45 inches in length (90-100cm) – 3.5 to 5
inches in width (9-12cm), any technique, any size or type of thread, at least
two colors. The lace cannot be attached to fabric or framed. All sides of the
lace should be finished. Beads and wire are permitted, but remember this is a
two dimensional contest.
Categories of submission:
Original Lace Design – The entry must be designed and worked by the
entrant.
A copy of the original pattern and working directions must be submitted with
the entry.
Technical Proficiency – The entry must be worked completely by the entrant,
but another lace designer’s pattern may be used. Information acknowledging
the designer and source of the pattern must be provided with the entry.
Start a tradition, include the family, and create a table ribbon that binds
your family traditions and memories.
All entrants must be members of the I.O.L.I.
First right of publication is granted to the I.O.L.I. Bulletin. Designer of
original work will hold the copyright.
The Bulletin editor or I.O.L.I. Board designated photographer will
photograph the lace pieces.
Request entry forms and more details: from Debra Jenny, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
(mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]) . Deadline for submitting lace entries is June
24, 2006.

[lace] photography

2004-02-01 Thread Needlelace
When purchasing a camera, also consider the possibility of publishing your
pictures in a lace publication. As an example, the I.O.L.I. Bulletin (While I do
not know, I would not think it would be that different from LACE or any other
lace publication.) requires photos to be at least 300 ppi (pixels per inch).
Which requires a digital camera with higher megapix and set to take less
photos per photo card or CF card or stix or whatever your particular camera
uses. As a point of reference: A Canon 2.1 megapix Elf set at the highest
setting will allow a 3x5 photo to be published. A Nikon 5700 5 megapix camera set
to the 2nd highest setting will allow an 8 x 6 photo to be published. Of
course any cropping will influence the ppi. (If a 3 x5 size 300 ppi picture is
cropped and published at the 3x5 size, the ppi will be too low for a clear
published photo.) A camera with higher ppi allows for greater flexibility in photo
usage.
(One way to check your ppi is to go into your Photoshop program and click
image size, then change the ppi to 300 and note the size of the picture.)

I have really found it almost impossible to take high detailed digital
pictures of lace without a tripod.
I have read the threads, so without repeating their advice, I also:
Use a tripod with an arm which allows me to position my camera directly over
the lace for a shot without distortion.
For those times when a vertical shot is not possible, position my Ott light
in such a way that the 2, 1/4 inch, white, foam poster boards (which I scored
and folded in half like a card) are positioned around the lace to off set any
shadows or uneven lighting.

[lace] re:Finnish lace pillow

2003-10-07 Thread Needlelace
I have the Finnish lace pillow and enjoy it very much. Its portability is
wonderful. If you look closely, the roller can be turned and it can actually make
corners (It is possible to see a portion of the ratchet if you look
carefully.) I have not used it for corners, I usually do corners with a cookie pillow.
I do not know if the current pillows come with the elastic band that makes
securing the bobbins fast. My pillow was purchased at the OIDFA convention in
Gent. I do not know the payment options available from the manufacturer in
Finland.

[lace-chat] firewall fun

2003-10-06 Thread Needlelace
Thank you to everyone who helped me with this situation.
I have learned there are two types of firewalls: hardware (routers) and
software (Norton and XP) I am told hardware is more dependable than software
firewalls. ( I know two people who have had Norton spontaneously disable.) Because
of the spontaneous issue, I have elected to install a router and activate XP's
firewall. I am told I do not need both, but I am paranoid. I also have
installed the new 2004 Norton antivirus. Hopefully my e-mails will be sent faster
then the e-mails using Norton's firewall. (I considered placing a bobbin lace
pillow by the computer -I figured a simple baby edging would add up fast to
yardage. Last year I tatted 7 yards of lace waiting for kids and using those
wasted minutes. Yikes!!! That *is* a lot of wasted time!!) On a frustrating
note-this is the second time I have typed this-my computer shut down it's wireless
connection.
Well, here goes.

[lace-chat] computers and firewalls

2003-09-26 Thread Needlelace
Technology- a love/hate relationship.
I am in need of advice on firewalls.
I use cable, windows XP with live updates and AOL.
I was using Norton 2002 for viruses with automatic updates. When my
subscription for updates expired I called Norton and they talked me into their
Internet
product which has virus protection and a firewall. The Norton person said I
needed a firewall too.
So I uninstalled Norton 2002 and installed Norton's Internet. I just saw an
article in the newspaper that said XP has a firewall. So I guess that means I
did not need the firewall from Norton?? Since installing the new Norton system
I am constantly receiving Trojan back door subseven warnings. Sometimes when I
am working I will look at the icons in the right hand corner either one or
both of my virus protection and firewall will have spontaneously disabled, I
have to go in and enable them. All of this I find frustrating.
I do not know what to do. Is the XP firewall adequate? Should I get rid of
Nortons firewall? Should I return the Internet program and ask for the new virus
protection program? I do not know if the XP firewall was enabled before the
Norton firewall was added. (I did call Dell and the tech said it was-do I
believe them?) When Norton was added it would disable any other firewall.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
