Here in Adelaide we call the 's Gravenmoerse half stitch - half stitch with attitude. :-) Once you've done a half dozen half stitch blocks you might be able to understand the geometry of the stitch - so different but so beautiful when once you get the hang of it. Similarly, 's Gravenmoerse is so similar to torchon that many experienced lacemakers have more trouble than beginners with the parts that differ, especially the unique half stitch. One of our members comes from France and I saw her using the leather/vinyl cover cloth. I've made myself a couple and they do seem to speed up the bobbins - maybe I should get them out to work Mum's tablecloth. :-) Brigitte works with continental bobbins on a flat pillow. Dear Lacers - for anyone who tried to book a room in the Finger Lakes Lace Guild Block set aside for Ithaca Lace Day October 6-9, 2006, at the Ramada Inn and was told that there were no rooms left - this was in error. Please call up the Ramada Inn again. They goofed and we've straightened them out now, after having heard of the problem from someone while in Montreal. The Ramada's number is 607-257-3100. Please use this local number rather than the Ramada chain's 800 number. If the person at the desk still tells you there are no rooms, be insistent, ask for Scott, the Operations Manager. We just called them yesterday and there are still plenty of rooms in the set aside block, but apparently someone at the desk was confused in the past. You shouldn't have any problems now, but if you still do, after asking for Scott, please contact Holly Van Sciver [EMAIL PROTECTED] or me privately and we'll get on it immediately. We suggest reserving a room even before you know what choice of workshop you got, simply because hotel rooms are ultimately limited in Ithaca. If you choose not to come after receiving your class registration confirmation, you can always cancel (1) the hotel reservation per the policies of the Ramada Inn (check with Ramada for the policy that applies to these blocked rooms), and (2) your class per the policy printed in the Ithaca Lace Day information materials --- just please do both promptly so someone else may have your space. You should be getting your Ithaca Lace Day registration confirmations from the Ithaca Lace Day Registrar the week of August 21st. Great seeing so many lacers in Montreal. Our hosts did a fabulous job. I have never had a wooden bookmark before I love it. The tread I can use on a project I want to start, it is a flamingo, I am not sure what the wire is for, I thought it might be for spangling but it is the wrong type, you will have to tell me in July. I am glad you enjoyed the AGM, I went to a couple of Australian ones when they were in Melbourne. Sorry to hear about your accident Lynne. Please go to the Dr and get checked out as we had an accident many years ago and I didn't think I was hurt. The police man who came the day of the accident said if I was sore the next day to go to the Dr or I wouldn't get any bills paid if I later found out something was wrong. Like you the next day I was really sore, went to the Dr and found out I had whiplash, 3 months having traction so was very grateful to the policeman. We were T-Boned too, by a Fire truck. In response to the forwarded question about Pellestrina in the far south of the Venetian Lagoon, I visited Pellestrina in search of lace in the fall of 2001. I found no current evidence of lace or lacemaking then. I was drawn because it was the site of the 18th century playwright Goldoni's Squabbles at Chioggia in which the female characters are all lacemakers. I inquired at the tourism office, shops, police station, bars, and the public library but nothing. Only at the public library did they know about the play and what lace I was talking about. On the main street (the one you arrive at the head of when you alight from the ferry) I did find the house where Goldoni lived when he penned the play. The house is on the left hand side when your back is to the ferry landing (a ways down from the landing but very walkable). Look UP to the second story for the plaque mentioning Goldoni. They were renovating the house when I was there. The little bar and restaurant at the ferry drop off was named for the play but they didn't seem to know anything else about it! Pellestrina and Chioggia (its city) constitute a bustling, hardworking commercial port, far removed from the tourism and laid-backness of Venice. Very, very little English spoken there. A bit hard to get to - you take water transport to the Lido and from there a combination of train and more ferry riding to Pellestrina but well worth the adventure to go someplace without hoards of tourists. I think it took us about 1.5 to 2 hours to get there. Perhaps you'll have better luck than I did at finding Pellestrina Lace. If you go, please report back!!
