[lace] Re Lace and Maths

2018-05-21 Thread Ann Humphreys
I am finding this topic very interesting. I have been maths challenged all my
life. Numbers make no sense to me. Only verbal explanations or the written
word.
I am a mainly self taught lacemaker. I did go to a lace tutor who told me I
would never be a lacemaker if I couldn’t follow a working diagram and
insisted I work only that way. I could not understand and it caused such
anxiety I gave up.
Some years later I was given some Christine Springett videos which all made
sense to me listening and watching and working at the same time. I still work
only patterns I can understand or from books with written instructions.
Perhaps it is that an ability to understand lacemaking needs an understanding
of maths.

I am working a piece of lace that on a corner needs one of the inner pins to

would normally use one pin hole does anyone know of a neat way of doing this

Hi
What lace are you working?
Torchon, Russian braid?
It would be helpful and then perhaps we can all come up with an answer for
you!
Pat

The lace is a wholestitch braid which at the corner turns to halfstitch braid
and reverts back to wholestitch at the next corner.

[lace] Fan Making

2006-08-11 Thread ann humphreys
I have made a number of fans using fan sticks taken from inexpensive fans
bought in tourist shops especially in Spain. Whilst they are only plastic or
cheap wood they do look nice when made up with your own lace and you can
always move onto better quality fan sticks when you become more experienced
in fan making.

[lace] New Member

2006-08-08 Thread ann humphreys
Hello my name is Ann and I am pleased to have eventually got to join the
group thanks to Sue and Avital for their efforts.

I live in Yorkshire in the North of England with my husband. I have two
beautiful grandchildren and another on the way next spring. They all live
quite close to me so I am very much a hands on Nana which I love but life is
usually very hectic and tiring, not complaining though..

I have been lacemaking for about six years and have tried different types
but my favourites are Honiton and Bedfordshire. I had intended to learn
Bucks Point this year but as it is now August and I still have a couple of
projects on my pillows I need to finish before starting with my Christmas
lace I think this will have to be deferred until next year.

I do know some of you from other lists and I am looking forward to getting
to know a lot more of you.

Best wishes
Ann
