Hi All having just uploaded my Garrucha photos to Webshots I though I'd use their link to tell you all about it. If that doesn't work go to webshots and search for Garrucha Lace Day Anyway.. We all had a super day on Saturday. The weather was beautiful, the little boats in the harbour looked so pretty and the company was great. Visitors came from Carboneras, Almeria and Murcia and altogether there were about 80 of us making lace on the esplanade in Garrucha. The day started with a trip to a local bar for breakfast, poor waiters didn't know what had hit them :-) Several hours of serious lacemaking followed, lots of passersby stopped for a look and a chat, we all had a good look at other peoples work. As ususal our English Midland bobbins caused a stir with lacemakers who hadn't seen them before - having learnt from experience that they'll try to cut them off our pillows, I now take a supply of beginners bobbins already spangled so that they can buy some as souvenirs. Next time I'll have to get some nice dividig pins as I could have sold the ones on my pillow several times over :-) There was lots of lovely lace and for the first time since I've been in southern Spain there were several ladies using colour. I've seen colour used further north but in this region it tends to be very traditional torchon/white. In particular there was a piece of gold lace (see the photo) which was causing quite a stir and the green 'Cantu' type piece was really nice. A picnic lunch followed and the later we had some entertainment and all the visitors had a good look at the exhibition. All in all a good day was had by all. [lace] Le Puy and around (long)
Hi All Back again after a great day out in Garrucha yesterday. More of that later However, back to lace in France. Having collected the 'passsport' in Arlanc we discovered that there was another lace museum in Briode which not too far for us to drive so decided to spend the afternoon there. This turned out to be a fantastic treat. In the 70's a local lacemaker, Madam Arpin, realised that lacemaking was in danger of dying out and decided to do something about it. However, instead of just teaching traditional local lace, she took it one step further and started using colour and 3D techniques. Some of the stunning results are on display in the museum, along with traditional antique lace. All beautifully laid out and lit. Once again an assistant showed us round, making sure we didn't miss anything. The museum has a website http://www.hoteldeladentelle.com/ It's all in French but some of the pictures are good (if you find the one of the salmon - it's actually about one metre long). There were actually 2 place to visit, the school and the museum which are about 5 doors apart. There was a gentleman doing a 'bracelet' (made a change from the snake or 'bandage' which I started with) in lovely chunky thread. Apparently he's been in the museum in the morning , was so taken with the concept and that he had signed up for a afternoon lesson on the spot! Brilliant day and long suffering DH actually seemed to enjoy it. Next day and it was off to Le Puy in the morning and then on to Retournac in the afternoon. Le Puy turnrd out to be a bit of a disappointment. We visited on Saturday and there were no students in the school and not a great deal of lace on display. Unfortunately the Atelier Conservatoire National de la Dentelle du Puy-en-Velay is currently shut while the building is completly renovated and it's not due to re-open until Feb 2007. Talking to lacemakers in some of the shops, this would appear to be a conservative date - they reckon it's more likely to be 2009!!! I'll just have to go back again in a few years time :-) The lace shops are real 'tourist traps'. A very tiny amount of locally made lace, lots of handmade lace (probably imported from China) and an awful lot of little 'machine/chemical lace' motifs. The later were hardly ever marked as being machine made and there must be an awful lot of people who buy them convinced that they are buying hand-made lace. Great shame. Retournac is an hours drive from Le Puy along a stunning road which follows the Gorge du Peyredeyre. The day out was worth it just for the drive. Saturday afternoon was definately the best day to visit Retournac as the local lacemakers meet up to make lace within the museum. The museum was fascinating, lots of really good 'information' sheets along with the exhibits, even DH stopped to read them! The group of lacemakers were great, a mixed bunch of old and young including a couple of little girls. My very rusty French got a good battering as I tried to explain Bucks techniques to them (I carried a bucks bookmark to show that I was a lacemaker). Then followed a discussion on Spanish lace (as I'd told them that I lived in Spain) which ended with a demontration of how to do 'leaves' 'in the air' rather than 'on the pillow'. An interesting afternoon and well worth the trip. The shop had all the 'pattern packs' available as well as a good selection of books and other supplies. I was good and didn't treat myself to any more 'essentil supplies'. However, having done 4 museums in 2 days, DH's patience was wearing thin and I had to promise 'no more lace' for the rest of the holiday. If you happen to be in this very beautiful area of France then please make the effort to visit one or more of the museums - you won't be disappointed. Retournac is also closed at the moment for 'works', I'm sure they'll let the list know when it re-opens. [lace] De-lurking
Hi All Recent messages have made me realise just how guilty I am of Lurking. I've been on the list since 1996 and have hardly posted at all for the last few years. So to redress the balance here goes for a short report (got to be short as I'm off to Lace Day in Garrucha in half an hour). This summer DH and I decided to visit Dutch friends who had moved to France a couple of years ago. A look at a large scale map showed that their hamlet (3 houses) ia about an hours drive from Le Puy. As this has been on my 'must go there' list for a long time it seemed to good an opportunity to miss. 3 days driving - it's a long way from southern Spain - (including going over the fantastic Millau brige) bought us to our destination and peace and quiet in our friends new home (old farmhouse which they are renovating). Several glasses of wine later and lots of talking and I found out that Le Puy would not be my only place to visit. The nearby village of Arlanc also has a Lace Museum so that got added to the 'must visit' list. After a couple of days 'chilling out' we set off to Arlanc and what a wonderful surprise. A small museum dedicated entirely to lace and with a wonderful French lacemaker to make sure we got the most out of it. Having taken our money, she accompanied us round the museum explaining the history of the local lace industry, who the photo's were of and their relevance, pulled out drawers full of lace which wasn't on display and generaly made sure we hadn't missed anything. 2 hours passed swiftly and as we left she gave us a lace museum 'passport' which would give us discount on the entry price of other lace museums in the district. Re: [lace] Elastic for wedding garter
Hi Our daughter 'lost' her garter just after the ceremony - it ended up in new hubbies pocket. When she wanted to loan it to one her bridesmaids for her wedding we solved the problem by removing the top from an old 'stay up' type of stocking (the type which don't need suspenders) and adding that to lace. We left the original elastic in as well - just to make sure. As the elastic material is fluffy it worked well and we didn't have another embarressing moment. Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed doing it and am quite sorry it is finished. Jacquie Tinch and I were chatting last night about it as I wondered what elastic was best to use and we both remembered that someone on the Arachne list spoke about this a while back. I'm sure it was mentioned that you could use some kind of bra-strap elastic or something similar which was slightly fluffy on one side which would stop the garter from slipping. What I was wondering was, if this is correct, any ideas where I could get this from? Jacquie rightly said we could look on the internet but as you all have so much experience out there, I would rather go by your recommendations of what you have used to keep the garter from slipping. The holes in the garter are very small and will only take 4mm size elastic and ribbon - and that's another story trying to find some decent ribbon of that size so if you know of any good suppliers with a selection I'd love to hear from you. Hi Irene Lavori a Fuselli is Italian. I picked up a couple of magazines in Italy a couple of years ago, not the same ones though as these had patterns I've just come back from Rome and hunted for some more but couldn't find any. They seem to be special editions published by Mano de Fata which is company that sells loads of embroidery stuff as well. [lace] Back on Line at Last
Hi All in the wonderful world of lace, At long last Ive managed to get my computer online in Spain. Six months of [EMAIL PROTECTED] deprivation have been dreadful. I never realized how much I would miss my daily fix of Lace. Moving to Spain has been an interesting experience one day Ill write the book! All pillows, books, bobbins and threads arrived unscathed including a 22inch pillow with a fine bucks (200 bobbins) piece half done how not a single thread broke during the crash which wrote off our motorhome is beyond me. However, were here now at long last I have both a phone line and a computer working at the same time. Ive found the local (English speaking) sewing group and already I have 3 ladies making lace. Another 2 are due to start after Xmas, plus a Spanish lady who wants to learn. The last one could test my Spanish severely as she speaks no English at all. There a couple of ladies who winter in Spain making lace who come along occasionally so Ive a few people to bounce ideas of off. Ive spent the last 3 months redrafting all my beginners patterns so that the ladies can use thread which is available locally a good exercise in itself. There are Spanish lacemakers in the nearest town and just a couple of days ago I found out where they meet. I hope to go along this Wednesday afternoon and find them, but the sewing group is having its Xmas lunch the same day so I might not be in any fit stateJ. There used to be several lacemakers living in Spain on the list are you still there?
