Re: [lace] Soie Ovale

2020-04-18 Thread suebabbs385
Hi Susan

I have personally never been keen on working bobbin lace (or needle-lace
or embroidery) with "floss-type" silk, so am not a good person to say if
its useful. Here's my two-pence worth:

I've sent you a photo of a spool of Soie Ovale (I didn't have the time
to upload it to Flickr). I have only used it for needle lace. It is
flattish in appearance, not a round twisted silk. It is diabolically
hard to work in Illinois winters when the interior of houses are drier
than the Sahara - and so are one's hands. It catches on any rough
patches of skin and "fluffs" out unattractively. So one's hands need
frequent applications of handcream - and then time spent waiting so as
not to put oil on the silk which dulls its appearances or you end up
smelling of apple vinegar on the days you are using it, as the apple
vinegar does help smooth the hands (Weird, I know).

I love the effects of alternating the colours in the passives, thus
making it easy to get each worker to be of the desired colour. I
expect you'll get quite different effects depending on the colours you
choose eg pink and red would be more subtle than the vibrant yellow and
red. I wonder if you would get the stripes looking a muddy brown if you
used complementary colours, or if they wouldn't blend that much. More
experiments for you when you've survived the Binche memory curve!

2020-04-02 Thread suebabbs385
Apparently both Pierre and Dagmar achieved writing an email to arachne!
Yes, it's as simple as writing an email to lace@arachne.com

However as you have noted, we are limited to text (not even French
accents on Pierre's surname come through) and cannot post photos / pdfs
etc.

I have no idea how the transition to another platform would work, so
cannot comment on that. However I think the list has lost a lot of
vibrancy over recent years as many members now show patterns,
work-in-progress etc on Facebook instead of on Arachne. It would
certainly be wonderful to be able to include photos etc in one's
messages

Urling's was a shop in Germany that sold (amongst other things) lace.
So it is not a type of lace, but probably machine made lace curtains

[lace] Important changes to Flickr Pro subscriptions

2020-01-22 Thread suebabbs385
As you all know, we now subscribe to Flickr Pro for the storage of our
photos. Flickr's prices are going up to $59.99 + tax for the annual
plan or $117.99 + tax for the two year plan. Last year we paid $49.99
for the year, in April 2019.

The offer I have received today from Flickr gives us the chance to renew
at last year's prices, and makes it clear that they will extend the
term of our current Pro subscription, so I have decided to go ahead and
renew. I have chosen to subscribe for 2 years at a total cost of
$100.29 incl tax. This will keep our photos stored until April 15 2022.

Various Arachne members offered to help share the cost when we next
renewed and asked me to let them know when I next paid, so I am doing
so!It would be great if we could find 20 Arachneans who would like
to pay $5 each to cover this. Please email me if you want to help pay
for our photo storage

Hi Arachne2003,
We’re writing to inform you that effective today, the price of Flickr
Pro subscriptions has increased to:

To thank loyal Pro members for your continued support, we are offering
all current Pros the opportunity to renew now at last year’s price.
Click here to extend your subscription term now
.

Why has the price changed?

Please see last month’s letter from Flickr's CEO and Chief Geek, Don
MacAskill
.
In short: Flickr is a huge and extremely costly service to run. We
intend to keep investing in making it even better, but it cannot
continue to operate at a loss.

If I renew now, what happens to the remainder of my current
subscription?

We will extend the term of your current Pro subscription. For example:
if your current subscription expires in July 2020 and you choose to
renew now, we will add an additional year to your subscription at the
2019 price, extending your subscription end date to July 2021.

Who is eligible to extend their subscriptions?

All current Flickr Pros are eligible. We are inviting monthly
subscribers to lock in a one- or two-year term at the 2019 rate. Annual
subscribers with a renewal date prior to July 1 are invited to add two
years now. All others are invited to add a one- or two-year term.

June 13-14 2020. Christchurch, Dorset, UK. Contact person for details
and bookings: Jane Atkinson (j...@contemporarylace.com)

June 18-19 2020. Northfield IL, US. Details and booking: Sue Babbs

July 11-12 2020. The Lace Museum, Sunnyvale, CA, US. Details and
booking: Kim Davis (k...@wirelace.net) [Please note that this course is
a repeat of the content presented in 2019 at the Hunterdon Museum]

A NOTE ABOUT TUITION FEES:

Please note that each venue will charge a different tuition fee. I
believe all knowledge should be free so I am teaching pro-bono with all
tuition costs contributing to travel and host venue expenses alone. With
each host having different needs, some private individuals, others
cultural institutions, this leads to varying tuition fees. If you can
afford to attend the more expensive workshops, please do. You'll be
contributing the the preservation of lace culture and fine institutions
that support our craft. I also encourage you, however, to keep your
carbon footprint as low as possible by travelling to your nearest venue.
I am really looking forward to meeting you!

You can see more about Pierre on : http://www.pierrefouche.net

I would highly recommend these classes!

Re[2]: [lace] advise on altering a Binch design

2020-01-11 Thread suebabbs385
I am away from a pillow to try this out, but I think it will work if you
hang 4 pairs round the left corner pin.

1 pair goes horizontally across the top and then becomes the right
footside outer pair
1 pair does the vertical left footside outer pair
The 2 inner pairs then cross - and one goes horizontally to the right
corner (and then vertically down as the outer passive pair on the right
side); and one goes vertically down (the outer passive pair on the left
side)

When you reach the right corner, add 2 pairs. Work these through the
horizontal pair which has come from the left corner; then cross them -
one goes horizontally to the left corner (and then vertically down as
the inner passive pair on the left side); and the other goes vertically
down (the inner passive pair on the right side)

Hope this works! It does in my head!!

I used the link and the first examples I saw were pewter enhanced. There’s been
a question rumbling in my mind for a while about the pewter. Does it add
noticeably to the weight of the bobbin? I see they are also spangled, which
adds weight, so I’m guessing the answer is no.

I’ve been frustrated with the large area taken up by bobbins and would love to
find something the size of a honiton bobbin but much heavier for use with
threads like Oliver Twist, Finca 12, etc. Might that be why the pewter was
added?

I choose google photos.

It has scared me rather as Google appears to have a copy of every photo I
have taken and every image I have created! I suppose I did not handle the
process properly, but I am not too worried about it.

I have discovered that apparently I can share a Album with you. I presume
if you click on it will take you there:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/vstK8ADx3qo3KtRc6

This is my "Lace Making Bobbin Album" and it contains almost 1500 pictures,
the large majority of which are annotated and in Postcard format. These are
the pictures in the physical albums I want to get rid of, as mentioned in my
earlier post.

I have been doing this for years and whilst I think my comments are mostly
accurate I have made a few blunders over the years, particularly in my
earlier times when I really knew hardly anything about these wonderful
tools.

I hope this works and you may share the link with others.

I also need to say a special thank you to Arachne members who will have
contributed to these pictures either with a single bobbin or perhaps sharing
with me your whole collection.

I see this as an educational database and putting on record a selection of
Lace making bobbins that people may not ordinarily see.

Essentially this is an ANTIQUE /VINTAGE bobbin collection and I would like
it to remain so. Having said that I believe that modern bobbin makers and
bobbin decorators make beautiful bobbins and very collectable bobbins; but
this is not the place for them.

So, fingers crossed it will work.

Many thanks for the suggestions. Sorry no prize for the person who
suggested Google! Smile.

Regards

Brian, who is still fortunately is not threatened by fires.

[lace-chat] [lace] New login to Flickr

2019-05-30 Thread suebabbs385
Thank you all for the messages asking for the log-in information to
Flickr. It is good to know so many of you are interested, and I will be
happy to continue to receive requests. It would help me if you gave me
your location when you do so.

I have had a lot of requests from several different countries and
locations within those countries. I don't want us all to log in on the
same day, as I suspect Flickr will lock us all out if we do that. I
already get messages asking me if it is really me uploading photos from
two different places in one day, and I don't want to end up having to
re-set the password because too many people log in at once.

So I will stagger the sending of the password and login information over
the next few weeks. I will start with the people who want to upload
photos now, and then work through the rest of you.

Meanwhile you do not need the password and login information to view the
photo albums already on the Flickr site. At the end of every message
from Arachne, there is the following link:-

Photo site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lacemaker/sets/

Clicking on that or copying and pasting it will get you in to the Flickr
site. I have checked this on my husband's computer which had never been
used to log into our Flickr account, so it should work easily for all of
you.

[lace] Pierre Fouché’s workshop at Hunterdon Art Museum

2019-04-13 Thread suebabbs385
Elena asked what other students had thought of Pierre Fouche's recent
class at the Hunterdon Art Museum. I was in the class last Saturday and
Sunday, and I thought it was absolutely brilliant!

Now I'm getting my head more round the class and reviewing his lecture
notes, I feel that his explanation of the way the weavers work in Binche
as shapes increase and decrease was the clearest explanation I have ever
been given. I have not taken a lot of Binche classes, so other teachers
may be equally clear, but the few classes I have taken have never been
so understandable.

And this all came as an added extra after we had seen photos of his
wonderful work and integration of all sorts of different techniques. We
listened spell-bound for several hours as he showed slide after slide of
his fascinating work. Do visit his website if you are not familiar with
his work: http://www.pierrefouche.net/

A huge vote of thanks goes to Devon Thein for organising this and
persuading the Hunterdon to host this class.

Hello all,
Of course the reality is that there are

many, many ways to make lace lace, and as long as the final result is
beautiful
it doesn’t matter how you get there.

In fact, this was the principal lesson we learned recently in South African
lace artist Pierre Fouché’s workshop. He combines Flemish lace and point
ground
lace in his work and even uses macrame knots to secure his stitches. Of
course
his style is contemporary and not traditional, but the results are incredibly
beautiful. It was very liberating to learn about his methods.

I’d love to hear what some other students in Pierre’s class thought about
it
and how you think it will impact your own approach to lacemaking? What were
the
highlights for you? I’m sure the Arachnids who couldn’t attend would be
glad to
hear about it.

All the Best,
Elena

Yes, Brenda is right about the accents and the adjective, I just hadn't
thought of those, but one doesn’t refer to a person as a Scouse -
whatever the Cambridge dictionary says!! Cambridge is too far south to get
such details right. Having lived as a Northerner in the south of England
for 20 years, I was teased a lot about my Cheshire accent. I'm very glad it
wasn't a Liverpool one, even though I lived less than a mile from Liverpool.

I think Lancashire hot-pot always has the potatoes layered on the top,
whereas the way my Gran made Scouse it always had the potatoes stirred in
(and she never used lamb for Scouse, only hotpot)

I'd seen the joke before, and could imagine it happening for real too!

2013-06-11 Thread suebabbs385
Jeri is right that using several colours of magic threads is better than all
one colour, especially if your lace is made of very fine threads where all
the pins are close together.

When using magic threads, I find it even easier if I use silk threads (e.g.
Piper's 90/3) rather than cotton. Silk slides through the loops more easily
and is stronger.

It has just occurred to me that this would be a good use of threads left on
bobbins at the end of a project.

Re: [lace] out of print books

2013-05-27 Thread suebabbs385
If lace authors are only getting pence for their books, and their books are
now out of print so are not getting any further recompense, and they have a
pdf file (and the right to publish more copies themselves) would it not be a
good idea for them to burn and sell CDs with their book in pdf form,
charging whatever they feel is reasonable for the CD?

All of us on Arachne have access to computers, and a pdf copy of a book is
better than not being able to get the book, plus we can easily print
patterns and working diagrams as needed. IN America it would be easy for us
to go to Kinkos or Staples etc. and get the whole book printed and spiral
bound (which means you can open it flat, which is always advantageous for a
textbook you want to work from)

Dear Sue,
I'm writing re the 8th British Navy bobbin.
Vietnam wouldn't let me write to the list. When I get home on May 20th I
have a number of contacts who may be able to help.

Just a thought though: is 1981 definitely a year of death? Have to
considered it might be like a Regimental Number?

Subject: [lace] Exciting find!

Last weekend, I attended the North Carolina Regional Lacers' Spring Lace
Day. As always, it was great fun!..there was an area for lacemakers to sell
lacemaking supplies they no longer use. A friend was there, selling the
last of the things from Betty Ann Rice. I glanced into a box of old
bobbins, and a spangle caught my eye... could it be?

It was a tiny bone spy glass... And yes! It was a Stanhope! The image was
barely visible, but I was very excited to find it. The amazing thing is
that so many people had been through those bobbins in the past year and no
one else had noticed it. I suppose our discussion last week about Stanhopes
was fresh in my mind, so I knew it when I saw it.

After getting home with it and looking at it carefully, I realized the lens
was coated with grime. After carefully cleaning it, I can now see four
drawings with titles! There is King's Road, The Aquarium, Palace
Pier, and The Beach. There appear to be two other pictures below the
four, but all that is visible are the tops of the drawings.

Any ideas where these places are? The bobbin has British 8th Navy written
on it with the name of someone who died in 1981.

And you'll find Catherine Barley's reply to my question about architect's
linen In January 2011 in the archives:

Hi Sue

I use a dark blue matt sticky backed plastic. I prefer it to architect's
linen as it makes for a better contrast with the fine white threads. I
believe it is available in a variety of colours, but I prefer the dark blue.
I think most lace suppliers stock it.

Gmail has this extremely irritating feature. They feel that if you sent a
message, you shouldn't be bothered by seeing it again in your
inbox. So if you send a message to Arachne, it doesn't appear in your inbox.
I also use Gmail and have had to get used to this behavior, but
it's standard for Gmail. If you really need to know whether your message got
to the list, go to

http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com and check for your
posting.

Good luck!
