I remember a mate to this bobbin that appeared on eBay several years
ago. As I remember it, the bobbin was found on a historical dig that
yielded other artifacts dated to the 16th century. That's why the bobbin
was also dated thus.

The other bobbin was tinted greenish, so it looks like this is a different
bobbin but the same style.

The price on the other bobbin went way beyond what my 'pocket snake' would
allow me to pay for one bobbin -- no matter how old. However, I had Kenn
van Dieren make me some from that same design which I have enjoyed using.

The price on this one has not gone as high as the other one -- at least,
not yet. There's still over a day to go.

Happy lacing,

[lace] 16th century bobbin on ebay

2004-08-14 Thread Dmt11home
Another point of reference is the lacefairy site, _www.lacefairy.com_
(http://www.lacefairy.com) where you can see art depicting lacemakers and their
bobbins from the 17th century.
On the My Met Gallery that I set up, there are two paintings from the
1600's, one Dutch, one Danish with bobbins ressembling the ebay bobbin. (Go to
_http://www.metmuseum.org/mymetmuseum/index.asp_
(http://www.metmuseum.org/mymetmuseum/index.asp) and enter "lace" for user name and
"lover" for password. The
Dutch painting is near the beginning and the Danish painting is near the
end.)
But of course, it could have been made any time since. Brian could be making
one now.

I'm glad I brought this to the attention of my more learned
colleagues on Arachne!! I had not sent the seller a
message, and probably won't!! It seems that this bobbin
might be as he/she says.

Hello Adele and All,
You are right. It is a problem, when Germans say f. e. 18th cent. theey
mean the years from 1700 till 1799. But my swedish girl friend told me
they mean from 1800 till 1899.

Hi Clay and All,
This bobbin is very similar in shape to one of the bobbins recovered
from the 'Batavia' ship wreck off Australia. It was a Dutch ship
wrecked off the west coast of Australia in 1629, so the bobbins were
older than that. They were featured on an Australian stamp some years
ago and Kleinhout make reproductions of them. It would be interesting
to see if there is a Dutch connection to this bobbin.

Now, I must say I'm VERY skeptical. (1) 16th century? says
who?? This is an awfully sophisticated turning for a bobbin
used in an art form which was merely decades old at the
time. (2) for a "dug" bobbin, the sharp edges of the
turnings are awfully crisp and clean... (3) dug from
*where*??? this bobbin doesn't look like anything I'm
familiar with from "way back"...
Should we launch an email offensive to the seller???
(devilish vbg).

Re: [lace] 16th century bobbin on ebay???

2004-08-13 Thread Adele Shaak
Hi Clay:
I'm normally the most suspicious antiques shopper you'd ever see, and
I'd certainly politely ask the seller for the provenance of the bobbin
if I were going to bid on it. It would be interesting to see what the
seller said.

I'd also check what the seller means by "16th-century" because a lot of
people think that means the 1600s, not the 1500s.

If by "dug" the seller means that this bobbin was lying on its own in
the open ground for a few centuries, I'd agree that the condition is
entirely too good for that. But, it could have been found inside the
floor of a 16th century home, for example, in which case it would be
dirty and dry but not necessarily otherwise damaged.

For shape, I don't think it's out of range for a bobbin from the 1600s,
and maybe even the 1500s, because we have so little information on
bobbin shapes from that time.

Re: the turning: yes, it's true lacemaking was still in its early
stages, but not lathe-turning. Craftsmen had been making weaving
bobbins for centuries, ditto fine turnings for a number of other wooden
implements. So I don't think that argument stands up too well.

But, I'd still join you in the skeptical line, though with an open mind
;0)

[lace] 16th century lace tools.

2003-10-27 Thread Bjarne og Leif Drews
Dear Vibeke, dear all,
Thanks for your help with enlighten me in how the lace tools looked like in
16th century.
You have ben most helpfull.
I enjoyed a visit to the lace fair in Slagelse last saturday.
It got a little expensive, but it was worth the while.
I baught 100 pairs of lovely tønder bobbins, small white ones with balls.
And then i am planning to start to make the wide danish tønder called
Louise. It takes 96 pairs, so i am winding and winding this moment.
It was such a long time, since i made something serious in lace, so it is
going to be a nice winter here.
