Re: [lace] Aurifil 80
I havenât seen any Aurifil 80, but from looking at the size ranges of other 2Z threads Aurifil seems to be nearer to DMC Machine Broder which is slightly finer than Egyptian gassed and Madeira Tanne/cotona. The w/cm will *probably* be in the mid 50s. The finer the thread the less difference a wrap or two makes. The difference between, say 27 w/cm and 30 w/cm is noticeable. The difference between 50 w/cm and 53 w/cm hardly shows at all. Brenda > > When I saw the 80 pop up over a year ago, I bought some, and it seems as nice as the other Mako sizes, which I love, so I bought it. But since I am a devotee of the Threads for Lace book, I waited with anticipation for her measurement for wraps per cm so I could confidently use it. Frankly, wraps per cm seems to me to be subject to individual ideosyncracy, so the same person wrapping leads to consistency. It comes in colors. I have been told privately that it is similar to Tanne 80. Re: [lace] Aurifil 80
I did an 'inexpert' wrap last year and I ended up with approximately 50 wraps That puts it in the realm of Egyptian cotton 80/2 or the no longer available Madeira Tanne 80, which I think it replaces. It is lovely to work with, has a great sheen, and comes in some great colours. *Marianne* Marianne Gallant Vernon, BC Canada m...@shaw.ca http://threadsnminis.blogspot.ca, https://www.facebook.com/GallantCreation/ On 2018-03-19 2:58 PM, Gabriele Patzner wrote: >> This is the first I have heard that Aurifil comes in 80. Lorelei, I get may Aurifil from redrockthreads.com (satisfied customer only) When I saw the 80 pop up over a year ago, I bought some, and it seems as nice as the other Mako sizes, which I love, so I bought it. Re: [lace] Aurifil 80
Hi I have several reels and plan to use it soon. Its thickness is very close to the old DMC retours no 80. I think it is a little finer. it has a lovely sheen and the thicker thread can act as a good gimp. I have used the 28 thickness and it is a dream to use with a lovely sheen. I think the Aurifil 80 may even work for Honiton if you want colour. Re: [lace] Aurifil 80
I agree that the finer a thread is the harder it is to wrap consistently and thus get an accurate wrap (to your tension). The good news is that the finer the thread the less difference a couple of wraps make. The difference between, say, a 20 w/cm thread and a 22 w/cm is noticeable, but the difference between, say, 55 w/cm and 60 w/cm is only just noticeable in use. Re: [lace] Aurifil 80
I have done some playing around with the Aurifil 80, and I would say it is about equivalent to either Brok 120/2 or Egyptian 120/2. I did an 'inexpert' wrap and I cam up with about 59 wraps per cm. i have used it for one of the mats from Roz Snowden's Miniature Bobbin lace book that called for Madeira Tanne 80 which is no longer made, and it worked just fine, even though Brenda's book tells me that one is 50 wraps. I think with these really fine threads it is virtually impossible to get a very accurate wrap. I'd say it likely is very equivalent to any of the machine embroidery 80 threads that are no longer available. and yes, it does come in colours, though not the full range that Aurifil has in their other weights. *Marianne* Marianne Gallant Vernon, BC Canada m...@shaw.ca http://threadsnminis.blogspot.ca, https://www.facebook.com/GallantCreation/ On 2017-10-06 5:05 PM, Anna Binnie wrote: > Sorry if I'm a bit of a bore, I remember there was a discussion on > this thread, could someone please tell me its equivalents or its wpi, > please. > > I have just used the 40 and 50 for machine quilting and used the 28 > for lace and thought the 80 would be great for finer laces. > - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. I havenât seen 80 wt Aurifil, but judging from the thicknesses of the other sizes the size 80 wt will be very fine. [lace] Aurifil 80
Sorry if I'm a bit of a bore, I remember there was a discussion on this thread, could someone please tell me its equivalents or its wpi, please. I have just used the 40 and 50 for machine quilting and used the 28 for lace and thought the 80 would be great for finer laces. Re: [lace] Aurifil 80
Yes it does come in colours, though not yet the full line. You can find out which colours are available here: http://www.aurifil.com/products/cotton-80. You have to scroll down and you'll see a link to their pdf file which shows which colours are available in the 80wt. There are 88 colours available, but it is so new that not a lot of stores carry it yet, even my supplier has only brought in a few colours yet. *Marianne* Marianne Gallant Vernon, BC Canada m...@shaw.ca http://threadsnminis.blogspot.ca, https://www.facebook.com/GallantCreation/ On 2017-04-10 1:15 PM, Lorelei Halley wrote: > Marianne > Thanks for the report on aurifil 80. [lace] Aurifil 80
Has anyone done anything with the new Aurifil 80? I have some, and it looks like a very nice thread, with a fairly tight twist and a beautiful sheen. It seemed thinner than the Madeira Cotona 80, so I did a wrap, and yes it definitely is finer, my wrap came up to 58 wraps/cm, which puts it in the same league as Egyptian cotton 120/2. I haven't done any lace with it yet, but Dianne has some too, and she is trying to figure out what to use it on, since if it is the same thickness as 120/2 it will too fine for lace that calls for 80/2. Just curious if anyone has used it yet. *Marianne* Marianne Gallant Vernon, BC Canada m...@shaw.ca http://threadsnminis.blogspot.ca, https://www.facebook.com/GallantCreation/ - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here.
