RE: [lace] Buddy Map- Jo Falkirk (kinda long)
I've been reading the postings about the buddy map. Seems that there are more complaints than compliments for the work you and Lori have done. I think your patience in trying to keep everyone happy is to be commended. When I posted my information for the map, I only listed the town and zip code I live in along with my e-mail address. It is a very small town - about 2 miles long and 1 mile wide so my bubble isn't to far off the mark, but it can stay where it is. Since I live in a popular resort area for the eastern United States, I figure if any fellow lacemakers are going to be in the area and they would like to meet me, they can send a email letting me know when they will be in the area and we can make arrangements to meet at a time and place convenient for each of us. Also my name, address and phone number are listed in the area phone directory so if someone really want to find me they will. When I put myself on the map, I wasn't aware that it was linked to the Google maps. If I had been, I wouldn't have put myself on it. The personal data is in fact less visible by Google than on ordinary pages. To explain I need to become quite technical. The list with personal information is encoded in scripts. Search engines scan the text portions of the HTML pages, not the scripts. Proof: look for lacemakers of the world guestbook check out the cache and you'll see an empty list. The current implementation even better hides the list from search engines than previously on buddymapping.com Proof: drop guestbook from the search and check the cache for buddymapping, the list with members does appear. The functions to present the data on the right spot on the map are executed by browsers on PCs, not by a Google server. Proof: tell your browser to work off line, you only get messages we don't have maps at this zoom level for this region as the maps are retrieved from the google server, but the bubbles still appear. This offline experiment unearthes another bug though )-: I might have solved the bug that obstructed the mailto links for Internet Explorer completely, when working offline the email address of the wrong person is shown. It should show none, not because the google server can't be reached, but because the server of the lacefairy website too can't be reached. Sorry for not counting to ten and reacting a bit impatient. It has been a weird day and still is. All your questions slowly teach me what I should have put on the map page and didn't. But then I got called away. Jean, I hope it wasn't my impatiente that chased you away? The possibility to alter or delete entries is not very common with guestbooks. Miriam, If you look in the archives, you'll see that I had the same problem. IIRC, you have to choose US, not international or world, and put in Jerusalem. The problem is not that Israel is so small but that Google maps does not support Israel, although we have a Google office in Tel Aviv. Also, the Google satellite photos are not nearly as detailed as for other parts of the world, although the ones in Google Earth are pretty good now. Hello Janice, Check out Susan's wonderful Honiton and Binche lace. I am so envious of lacemakers who can do fine laces so beautifully. Really wonderful pieces there! Honiton is beautiful, though I don't think I'd like working it, what with taking in and out bobbins all the time. I did check out Achim's web site so I knew he was another of our lace guys. Most of us are happy to make lace on our pillows, this is the first time I have heard of someone making an edging for a pillow, or maybe it is not for a lace pillow that he mentioned in his email. Yes, it's for a lace pillow. The pillow is 4 cm high and totally flat, probably self made (bought it cheap on ebay). Now I want to make it domed, upholster it with new cover fabric and put a lace border around it. Since it will be touched a lot when turning the pillow, to make it less delicate, I use linen (Fresia 140/2) instead of cotton for the Bucks lace - I picked a pricking that suits a thicker thread and also magnified it to 110%. I'm still searching for a supplier of not-too-expensive thick felt to put as a last layer below the cover fabric. I'd prefer woollen felt - does anyone try to upholster a pillow with synthetic felt - I wonder if it would hold the pins as well as the natural felt? Re: [lace] Buddy map
I was thinking buckspoint was a little delicate for around a pillow. Good idea to make it with larger thread that will stand up to some wear and tear. Here in the U.S. I have purchased woolen felt from JoAnne Fabrics. They may carry it on their web site but you can probably find it closer to home. I know in the past there was mention of using carpet underfelt but these days it is probably made of synthetics not wool. She brought lots of Czech magazines, samples of lace and cd's of lace for us to look at. She will be visiting us again next month and we will be working on lace that day. Saturday found us making scarecrows out of burlap and raffia. Lucky me, she left all the magazines etc., in my care so I am having a lace overdose. Fantastic! Thanks to Lori to make the map and to Clay to write about it! This is a marvelous thing, how to spread lacemaking all over the world ;-) ! I think, that web has really enourmous power of sharing information and searching for it and this is a wonderful illustration of it. I tried it immediately and it really works - I suceeded to put myself there and also to put the map on my pages http://lacespider.blog.cz/ (following instructions under the button Put it on your side). Really fascinating - thanks to all, who take care of this! If you select a country instead of the world, you'll see dots that represent individual lacemakers who have added themselves to the map! I added myself yesterday... and so far, the list is very short. But it will be really fun to see the dots multiply on the map!! You don't have to give a lot of information about yourself, but your name and city/state/country is important. I added a picture as well. Go have a look! Lori's website is http://lace.lacefairy.com. From there, go to International on the menu bar, and Map Search is the first option on that pop-up menu. Click that, and then scroll down to the second map. The top one allows you to explore various countries and see where the lace activity is (or was...) in each country, along with related pictures such as typical pillows and bobbins, and some of their lace. Very interesting. The bottom map is the new addition! You click on that map and get a list of lacemakers around the world. Clay the email wont go to your own address. Thank you for trying to help. I did type in Dorset UK, but it kept saying address not found. In the end I went for the name closest to it, which is 30 miles away. Not bad in the scheme of things. At least I am now a dot on the map, g Sue T, Dorset, not quite Bournemouth, UK I don't think you need to put a street address, just Dorset, UK. Hi Spiders, I've put myself on the map, but how do you all get that lovely picture of a lacemaker? All I've got is a question mark. But I did get within 5 miles of my home. One thing wrong with the map, the United Kingdom is just shown as England. England is part of the United Kingdom (of Great Britain and Northern Ireland). Northern Ireland (shown as the blue bit on the Irish mainland) isn't part of England. Wales which is the second bit sticking out of the British mainland isn't part of England, and Scotland, which is the bit from about the top of Northern Ireland upwards and most of the islands above it, isn't England either. There are four kingdoms, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland which make up the United Kingdom. Tell someone in Wales, there're part of England and don't hang around for the reaction. Hello Sue I had problems getting my dot in the right place too. It couldn't find the village name (Allhallows) and when I tried Rochester it put the dot on the centre of Rochester, about 12 miles away, but then I tried using the postcode and now it's spot-on! One thing wrong with the map, the United Kingdom is just shown as England. The buttons below the map suggest the UK is not part of Europe, which is not true, and Norway, Sweden and Finland are ignored when selecting Europe.
