I'm pretty sure that her lacemaking didn't start until some time later - she
told me once that she'd had surgery and was supposed to take thing easy for a
while so she learned to make lace and hadn't stopped talking about it since!
During the war years I think she was busy with the family's motor garage

I know Doreen's daughter Mary (Bill's twin) from Lace Guild conventions. Sadly
their elder brother Arthur died in 1944 at the age of 8.

Yes, Diana
This book is about Doreen Wright who started the Lace Guild. Her son, Bill,
contacted me a year or more ago to ask for information about her visit to
South Africa in the early 1980's. I don't know if the book goes as far as
her lacemaking activities.

Can anyone confirm that this is the Doreen Wright who was a lacemaker and
author, and was the chairman at the time when the English Lace Guild was
formed?
There was an article in today's Daily Mail newspaper which got me thinking.
After a search I found the link below.

When we started our lace group way back in 1978 I suggested that we should
have a laceday. We were only l5 members, we hired a hall, advertised as best
we could, invited Doreen Wright to be our speaker. As I was the instigator, I
was naturally worried if we would get enough visitors to pay for all the
cost, but to our surprise. just over 7o lacemakers came.
Alas our speaker was very late, we thought she forgot. But in the end she
appeared, telling us that she run out of petrol on the motorway. So all was
well in the end and her talk was very helpful to us all.

Thank you to those who responded to my query about Doreen Wright. I greatly
enjoyed reading your stories and some really made me smile; Brenda's desk!
and Aurelia's australian student! They reinforce the impression I have of a
"real character".

While I'm most interested in making lace, I enjoy knowing a little about
the people who made it, it makes the craft come more alive. I agree with
Jeri that we should keep information about our "big names" - and the Lace
Guild was trying to do this, publishing interviews in the Lace magazine.
But sometimes I wonder, what was Miss Channer really like, and Thomas
Lester - all those fabulous designs! and so on.

RE: [lace] Doreen Wright

Well, since you ask... she was indeed "quite a character." Endless,
boundless energy, and she would let nothing and nobody stand in her way
when she was out to accomplish something, even if it meant protracted
struggle. I was not anything like a close friend; but we knew her well
enough that she stayed with us overnight when she travelled in this country
(U.S.). We first met when my husband and I drove down to her cottage at
Chalfont St. Giles one day (unexpected and unannounced except for a
telephone call an hour earlier to say we were coming and to get driving
directions -- which I guess makes us "characters" too). This was in the
early 1970's. I had learned how to do Torchon and was frantic to learn
more.

She welcomed us briefly and got right down to business. She put me in a
window with a pillow and bobbins and a pattern of Duke's Garter, gave me
half a dozen brisk words, and I was on my way, too terrified to object or
to ask any questions (the ultimate result of that beginning rests on the
sleeves of a blouse that I still have and love!). She had another student
in the room that same day, an Australian woman as I remember it, who had
come to study with her a year earlier, and was living in the house. The
study year was just coming to an end, and I think the two of them had
gotten pretty sick of each other; the day that I was there they weren't on
speaking terms; and Doreen told me all these various details, at intervals
over the whole afternoon, in a perfectly audible voice (the Australian
didn't say anything).

She was the author of a book, "Bobbin Lace Making," which, although written
in a somewhat rushed style characteristic of her, was helpful at a time
(1971) when there weren't that many books around for the ardent student of
lace, and I was grateful for it. And she gave me one of the most wonderful
presents I have ever had in my life: "Dentelles de Notre Temps," by Elena
Holeczyova, a stunning book that opened up a new world for me, the
wonderful world of 20th century Czechoslovakian lace. Doreen didn't say
much; she just gave it to me with a smile, and wrote her name in it. She
really loved lace.

Dear Lacemakers and Jane Read,

This is typical of many postings - no comments.

In this case, I did not write to the list, but did write privately to Jean's
marvelous husband - David Leader. To thank him for always giving freely of
his limited time and considerable computer talents, especially when Jean is away
and something Lace Guild-related needs to be done. They are a great team.

I think the people behind the scenes (the backup teams) often are not
acknowledged by us.

Also, I would like to suggest that it is nice to keep biographies of our lace
legends up-to-date for those times when they are needed in a hurry. (Doreen
Wright was 95. An obituary would be needed - sooner, rather than later.)
Jean Leader had the Doreen Wright tribute - written by Gwynedd Roberts -
ready-to-use. Major publications do this. Our much smaller lace organizations do not
(that I know of). It is a good idea, because the information can be
polished, and there is more time to verify facts and include all important information
that might otherwise be forgotten. It is the best send-off to Lace Heaven we
can give - an accurate "picture" documenting a lacemaker's life.

Read at this address, and marvel at the obstacles overcome by this one
lacemaker. If you have Doreen Wright's book, it would be nice to print and put in
the book:

2003-08-27 Thread Jeff & Lee Daly
I started making lace in the late 1978 in New Jersey USA. At that time
we had no teacher. Nancy Carnegie had Pamela Nottingham's book and
somehow I managed to get a copy of Doreen Wright's book. We did the best
we could for a few years until we found a teacher, but that is another
story.
Doreen Wright came to New York for the IOLI convention in 1979. It was
only 3-4 days and I left my DH and babies at home, stayed with friends
in the city and went. Boy! Did I learn a lot! I remember going to the
Cooper-Hewitt and "following" Kathe Kliot around and getting really good
info about what we were seeing. We also had a trip to the Metropolitan
Museum and saw some lovely laces that were put on display for us.(Those
of you who went to the IOLI convention this year -Sound familiar?)
Anyway, I had a Mini-workshop (a few hours only) with Doreen Wright. I
have no idea what it was but she did a harangue about how I was doing it
wrong, not enough time to help me, why was I there It didn't faze me
at all. I was just happy to attend and obviously, it has not affected
my lacemaking since I am still making lace almost 25 years later!... and
loving it!
This might not have been the eulogy expected but I still have fond
memories of that convention including Doreen Wright.

Following the sad news of the death of Doreen Wright, founder
Chairman of the Lace Guild, we have mounted an appreciation of her
life and contribution to lacemaking on The Lace Guild web site:

PS
This was from a file prepared by Gwynedd Roberts, a copy of which
Jean had in her records, and was adapted in something of a hurry
(Jean has just left for a week teaching lacemaking in Kintyre). I
should therefore appreciate being informed of any errors, which I
will do my best to correct expeditiously. Also, if anyone has a
better quality photograph, that would also be appreciated.

It is with great sadness, we tell you of the death of Mrs Doreen Wright

She died peacefully at home following several months of deteriorating

Her mind was as alert as ever right to to the end.

As the founder chairman of the Lace Guild, she will be missed by so many
