Me, too, Loreleiabout 1972/3, we first made contact. Such a sharing and loving person. She taught me more than lace. I knew when I heard her sons voice that the inevitable had happened. [lace] Doris Southard and Irma Osterman--their lace
For those who might not know either of these ladies, or who might want to be reminded of their skill, I do have some photos on my website. On my website I do have many photos of Doris' Tonder bobbin lace. She came to Chicago twice to give workshops for our local guild and stayed with me. This gave me an opportunity to photograph several of her pieces. The photography dates from the mid to late 1980s, so it doesn't contain her more recent work. http://lynxlace.com/bobbinlacenewrevival.html Her have DS below them. Look for the Point Ground Laces. I also have a piece of Irma's lace on my home page. http://lynxlace.com/index.html#needle lace It is the first one in the needle lace section. The title is Let me grow lovely growing old. It was published in the IOLI Bulletin and she sent me a print when I asked permission to post it. Re: [lace] Doris Southard
I am also one of Doris Southard’s many grateful students. My mother gave me my first lesson in bobbin lace in 1974. My parents were visiting us in Indiana from Denmark. She sent a Danish beginner’s book which I struggled through. After Doris’ book came out I started working through that, and gradually gained more confidence through her lessons. At first it was very confusing as I had started out with the cross-twist method, so the twists were all in the wrong places. Eventually I figured that out and was on my way. My early students also learned from Doris’ book. Later I took Doris’ class in Tønder lace. I think it was at the IOLI convention in Atlanta. I felt very fortunate having that opportunity, so I got to know her as the delightful and generous person she is. Doris contributed enormously to the spread of bobbin lace through her book. Thank you Doris. -Karen in Washington, DC - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. For help, write to arachne.modera...@gmail.com. Lyn in Lancaster PA asked: How many of her (Doris Southard's) students are on Arachne? Hi All, I began with Doris Southard's book also and worked to about the middle of the book and then switched to Judith Markham's on-line Torchon Beginners class. I also have a soft place in my heart for my first bobbin lace book and teacher. Re: [lace] Doris Southard
Count me in as another of Doris's remote students! I wanted to make proper lace to go on my 15th century costumes and once I figured out that bobbin lace was one of the correct forms, it was Doris Southard's book that I wound up with. I think it was in the beginning kit I ordered from Holly VanScriver. I lived in the mountains and there were no lace teachers around, let alone a guild, so it was me, my bobbins and pillow, and her book on many a weekend afternoon. Many thanks to Doris for your book that helped spread the joy, and sometimes fustrations, of making bobbin lace. I agree with everything Lyn says about Doris. I have a profound reverence for her. She was so generous and helpful, beyond just writing the book. She invited me to visit her a few times and we talked lace all day for several days. As far as I am concerned, she is the Great Lady of American bobbin lace. I do hope that Doris is out there reading all these lovely comments about her. I'm sure she is touched. My first encounter with bobbin lace occurred in the early 1980's. My husband and I went to a local festival in October. There sitting on the ground was a woman demonstrating bobbin lace. I'm not sure how long I stood there with my mouth open in awe! LOL! I don't recall much else but I did copy down the name and ISBN of her book. Then I went to the suggested local shop and ordered it. Alas, I didn't think to get the lady's name! Being rather busy in life the book was promptly placed on the shelf. But I never forgot about bobbin lace and in 1996 took my first class with Betty Alderson of Snowgoose. Then in 1999 I discovered JoAnne Pruitt's bobbin lace class through the local community college. She taught from Doris Southard's book. Low and behold, that was the same book that had sat on my shelf for those many years! (Mine being an older edition than the more recent light green version.) JoAnne also introduced me to the Doris Southard Lace Guild which I would finally join in 2001. (In '99 I was still working full time and the mother of 2 young children.) Now, 10 years later I am now the president of our guild. It is always a treat when our guild goes to Cedar Falls, Iowa to visit with Doris. In August we will be meeting with her and celebrating the guild's 20 anniversary! While she no longer makes lace, she still enjoys talking about lace and examining ours. Doris celebrated her 90th birthday last fall. You can see a picture of her on our website http://www.orgsites.com/ia/dslg/ . If you would like to contact Doris (email, snail mail or phone) please contact me and I will share her contact information off-list. She would love to hear from you! Re: [lace] Doris Southard
I remember when Doris celebrated her 80th - birthday (I *think* that was the auspicious number!). Someone on Arachne suggested that we send her birthday cards, and she was innundated by them!! I sent her one. She wrote to the list about how thrilled she had been to have so many people remember her birthday! Imagine my surprise - and delight - when several weeks later I got a thank-you card in the mail from her. I suspect that she answered every one of those cards she got. RE: [lace] Doris Southard
A weaving friend of mine was doing bobbin lace and I thought it wonderful but my life was too busy with a little granddaughter, big dogs etc. I couldn't see a bobbin lace pillow surviving without spills. Some years later I was helping a dear woman sell a whole lot of her fibre art materials including spinning, weaving, machine knitting items and tons of yarn. It was a huge job but we got it done. About a month later she phoned to say in her cleaning up to move to a smaller place she found a trunk with all her bobbin lace pillows, books, bobbins, bobbin winder and patterns. She had forgotten all about them in the bustle of moving. I figured the time had come to try this so I bought all the supplies from her. Included in these treasures was Doris Southard's book which included a personal message Betty and an autograph. I suspect Elizabeth had taken a bobbin lace class since at the time she did lace she lived in US. Most of her lace was done in classes. After receiving all the supplies I asked my weaving friend to show me how to do lace. She promised to do so the following weekend but since she and her husband were coming for dinner before that I begged instruction right away. Once I learned what a cross and a twist was about my instructor was Doris through her book. In weaving, I'm not much of a sample person but doing the samples in Doris' book was fun and educational. Doris, thank you so much for the hours of enjoyment you have provided to me along with the skills to move forward in doing lace. I owe my friend Elizabeth a great thank you for passing along all the needs to get going, a thank you to my weaving friend and especially to Doris as her lessons were invaluable. This afternoon Sally Olsen and I had a very pleasant visit with Doris Southard in her home in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Tomorrow (September 2) Doris will celebrate her 90th birthday! We brought our various goodies from the IOLI convention to show her. She also always takes great interest in seeing our latest lace projects and hearing about our guild activities. And it is always a delight for me to see her beautiful lace pieces too. Happy Birthday Doris!
