Hi Sue,

Thank you very much for taking on this task. I have sent $5 towards your costs
via Paypal. I have not been very active in Arachne lately through personal
circumstances, but I always read all emails and love spending time with all
the eye-candy in our photo albums (especially when feeling a little ‘down’).

Also, thank you Clay for your years of work and dedication to Arachne.

Happy lace making,

Joepie.

[lace] Flickr account - decision made!

2019-01-18 Thread Sue Babbs
I am tremendously grateful to Clay Blackwell for all the years she has hosted
this Flickr unlimited storage account. She has done so as a way of giving
back to the lace world. Thank you so much for doing this, Clay.

This morning I investigated having several free Flickr accounts. It would
mean, downloading all the photos from our existing account uploading them to
free Flickr accounts and typing in all the info all over again. I remember
how much work it was when we last moved storage platforms of the photos and I
went through that process. I have NO desire to do it ever again, especially
as we have a lot more stored photos than we had in 2012!

Quarterly charges used to be $6.95 every 3 months, but changed to $17.95 every
3 months in October 2018, which is what triggered Clay’s request to me
earlier this week.

So having spoken with Clay on the phone, I have now taken over this Flickr Pro
account and decided to go with the annual charge of $49.99, which I will pay
this year. It is due in April. I may ask for donations to help fund it in
April 2020. It allows us to store unlimited photos.

This way we can keep storing photos in the same place and keep all the
information that has been written about them. Our Flickr account
https://www.flickr.com/photos/lacemaker/ is always listed at the bottom of
each Arachne email. If you want to upload photos – or keep your photos

Re: [lace] Flickr account for photos

2019-01-18 Thread Clay Blackwell
I am so sorry for all of the confusion about the funding of our Flickr account!
I simply misread something and jumped to the wrong conclusion!

So please. Do not try to set up an account to reimburse me! The cost is
really not an issue for me, because it is very small. (Less than $20 a year)

What IS important to me is that you do not use our lace Flickr account as
personal storage for every picture you have. It is easy enough to set up your
own account if that is what you need. And unless you overload your own
account, it is free. But please do use the Arachne account to highlight WIPs
and remove (your own) old pictures as new ones are created!

Happy Lacemaking!

Clay

I have my own website for which I have to pay an annual fee to keep it running,
so have never had the necessity to use Flickr. However, I do know that some
who have used it in the past are now deceased and have been for some
considerable time, but their photos are still on Flickr! Is it only the person
who installed these photos who can delete them or can anyone perform this
operation?

I do visit the site when someone posts on arachne that they have have
downloaded photos for us all to see.

Hello all,

like Susan (and I suppose many more) I wasn’t aware that cost for hosting the
pics was carried by a single member.

Thank you, Clay.

I guess you had first offers of reimbursement and I would add mine to that. I
just need to know who is able and willing to collect. If I give five dollars
only 19 others need to do so and we financed a whole year on flickr for

Sending money to the other end of the world is really no problem with services
like paypal existing. BTW: For making single payments paypal can be used
without opening an account.

I suggest this because while for some the pruning of the archive is a valid
idea - and maybe some photos really are put up only to illustrate a current

But as I understood this, this is not the only problem. There is the collecting
and billing needing to be handled, and also the work on the account to be done.
If there are no volunteers for that, then the only option is for everyone to
get their very own flickr accounts (or whatever) and host their own photos -

[lace] Flickr account for photos

2019-01-16 Thread hottleco
Thank you for bringing this to our attention Sue! And thank you Clay—I had no
clue you were underwriting our Arachne Flickr to this extent. We have all
benefited from your generosity!

Before I offer suggestions, what time frame are we working with here? The most
obvious thing is to stop the Flickr billing meter to avoid further charges to
Clay. To that end, I will edit my album to remove at least 2/3 of my photos.
I’m always excited to post pics as I pass personal milestones but I have abused
our system by adding pics without removing any! Going forward, I will be sure
to make my album more of an rotating exhibit rather than a compendium of past
works.

If we can collectively get under the threshold of 1000 photos, we will have a
bit of breathing room to address our needs. While I am willing to contribute to
an Arachne Flickr Fund, there are some obvious logistical issues involved in
collecting funds from Arachne members scattered across the globe, each person
using local currency! This whole enterprise would be greatly simplified if we
can work within the Flickr guidelines for a free account. Sincerely, Susan

[lace] Flickr account for photos

2019-01-15 Thread Sue Babbs
Hi All

We need to put our collective thinking caps on. For many years now, Clay
Blackwell has been funding our Arachne Flickr site personally – apparently
since 2012. We have more photos (2674) stored there than can be stored on a
free Flickr account (1000).

There have been changes to the Flickr account recently and the costs are now
$17.95 a quarter. Clay no longer wishes to be responsible for hosting this
account.

I have been assisting her by maintaining the photos in albums and helping
Arachneans post those photos.

We need to find a solution for the future for our Flickr account, which will
involve getting the account out of Clay’s name into someone else’s if we
are to continue to use it. I have not investigated how this might be done –
or, if indeed it is possible to do so.

Suggestions as far as I see them are:

1) find someone else willing to host our Flickr account!
2) ask for donations to fund our Flickr account – (Maybe via PayPal
donations once a year. 72 x $1 donations would be sufficient at present)
3) find a different platform to store the photos (I have no knowledge on other
platforms)
4) suggest people remove their own photos and close down the storage online
5) remove all stored photos and simply go with the reduced storage that the
free Flickr account allows. This would allow us to see photos as we wanted to
discuss them
6) have multiple free Flickr accounts - starting up a new one as we near the
limit of 1000

Please don’t just reply to me personally on this, but let the whole list
know what you think? Do you want the availability of a photo storage site?
Do we need to keep all the photos? Can we archive ones in earlier years? All
suggestions welcome – but remember to trim your posts!!

I don’t have a lot of free time or knowledge to deal with any transfer, so
if there is someone out there with internet photo storage skills, now is the
time to reveal yourself!

Re: [lace] Flickr account

2014-01-03 Thread The Lacebee
The issue with Facebook is this:

- a closed group restricts access to the pages so that only those people
subscribed to the page and give access by the chosen moderators have access to
the pictures. Then, as has been said, if you just post a picture it can
disappear requiring hours of searching to find it as it it harder to crate
albums of photos in Groups

- if you set Arachne up as an entity rather than a group then pictures and all
posting become public domain which some people don't want as it means their
work and posts go public in the Internet and appear in google image searches.

Think of groups being like a forum and the lace guild page as an entity being
like a page of a film star.

Clay,

Having said that, there is no reason you couldn't set up a group as
you suggest, and see if it works! The Flickr account is still there
for those who like it.

I don't need to as there's already a number of Lace groups on
Facebook where I've been putting my pictures. The one I subscribe to
is called Bobbin Lace Makers and is so easy and just wonderful to
use. There is no need for any paranoia regarding privacy. You can
easily lock down your own homepage to be private. Personally I have
nothing to hide and haven't felt the need.

For my own 2¢ worth - i like that i can "see" additions to the Flickr site
in my Arachne emails. when a new photo is posted, i can look at it and
enjoy and dream. it makes it so wonderful. there are times when
discussion leaves me with - wish i could "see" this. but with a click of
the picture, i get a full size and can enlarge for detail. i don't have to
go to another place. if it ain't broke - don't fix it.

thanks for having this available for me because i am blessed with how it is

Re: [lace] Flickr account

2014-01-03 Thread Clay Blackwell
David, one problem with Facebook is that not everyone subscribes, and many of
us who do only post very little. There is a lot of concern about how much
information is gathered and who can see it. A third concern is that after only
a short time, the picture you posted is *way* down the queue and difficult to
find unless the searcher knows specifically how to look for it.

Having said that, there is no reason you couldn't set up a group as you
suggest, and see if it works! The Flickr account is still there for those who
like it.

Is it possible to see pictures on Facebook without being a member? I am not a
member and would prefer not to join unless the group feels that Facebook is the
best solution.

Clay,
I wanted to reply to you privately but comcast hates my PC and will
only allow my iPad :)

I personally don't do Flickr at all and reckon it would all be far
simpler just to set up a closed group on Facebook where most of us
are already anyway. I am in half a dozen of so fo these groups and
it's just so easy for everyone to post their photos, tell their
stories and view everyone else''s posts.

Flickr temporarily suspended the arachne2003 account because they
believed it had been hacked.

Flickr advises me that they are changing the way "I" can recover forgotten
information! One option is that I can give them the names of three trusted
individuals who can share the information. I propose Sue Babbs in the US,
Antje in Spain, and a computer literate volunteer in the UK! Any
volunteers?

[lace] Flickr Account

2013-02-06 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
Hooray! I got in today!
Clay the required name I needed was the 2nd one you mentioned - Youngest
daughter. That worked, and it let me in!!
I also Un-ticked the box for being permanently signed it. It automatically
had a tick in it, so I un-ticked, then answered the question, and Hey
Presto! It recognised me. (stupid thing!!! :)

Thank you all for your help and advice. Seeing all the lace is one thing,,
but Not being able to comment on any particular piece is annoying (to be
polite!!!)
