I was one of the Norfolk Lacemakers that made the chandelier, it was a group
effort but some contributed more than others in the assembly.

Re: [lace] Lace 21 Waddesdon Manor

2014-07-21 Thread Jeriames
Captions with the photos in the April 2014 Lace give us a clue as to
members of Arachne who have lace in the Waddesdon Manor.

I remember only names of people who frequently write to us:

Jane Atkinson
Jacqui Barber

Jane's lace is titled - Made to Fade. It appears to be a small version of
a lace window curtain, all in white-to-ecru threads, so that some sections
look faded. Sorry if I'm wrong Jane, but there is no further description.

Jacqui's lace is titled - In the Manner of Savonnerie. It is a colorful
oval lace mat, edged with black, and then with an added colored fringe.
This appears to be inspired by a French antique Savonnerie rug in a room at
Waddesdon. Jacqui?

There are entries by groups -- Norfolk Lacemakers - Chandelier, The Lace
Guild Museum's Volunteers (back cover) - Dress and Accessories. Some
reading this memo may have worked on these. The most precious to me is from
Young Lacemakers - Curly Stole. It is not clear whether the design is from a
home furnishing (wallpaper, embroidery or upholstery fabric) or from a
costume exhibited in the room where it is displayed. Pink to lavender/purple
swirls are appliqued onto what is either a white or pale gray scarf.

There is a lace called Whisperings by Carol Quarini. I'd like to know the
words spelled with thread ends that have not been woven back into the
lace. The lace length is shown flat, with each thread end arranged into words
to the right. The picture has been cropped so they are not clear.

If there are other Arachne members with lace in the exhibit, please share
your descriptions in something like the above manner. There are probably
others reading this who would like to know what at Waddesdon inspired you to
make an original lace for exhibition in such a prestigious location.

People reading this around the world might like to know The Lace Guild has
museum status, and you can visit their headquarters when you are traveling
in the U.K. http://www.laceguild.org

[lace] Lace 21 Waddesdon Manor

2014-07-21 Thread Jane Partridge
I think the way they explained it (we were members when it first came
in) was that they can only claim gift aid on a donation. If everyone has
to pay the £9 of the entry fee, then to be able to claim the tax refund
you have to give a donation on top of the fee.

Even so, on top of travel expenses, the £17 per person admission fee is
what puts me off going to see the exhibition, especially as I would not
be able to get there on my own, and the report that you need binoculars
to see the some of the lace is not very encouraging. We have visited the
house in the past, it is a treasure trove of items, including textiles,
and well worth visiting, but even then (it is now a number of years
since we went) the NT Handbook warned that pre-booking was recommended,
especially in school holidays or at weekends they tended to be very busy
and there was no guarantee of being able to get a timed ticket for that
day when you got there if you hadn't pre-booked.

It is not logical to me that they charge more when they are also able
to claim an extra £2.50 and some charities charge less for Gift Aid
entry fees. I have been told this is standard National Trust pricing
policy, not just at Waddesdon.

2014-07-20 Thread Jacquie Tinch
May I just add that, unless things have changed a lot, Christine's comment that
the lace trail booklets are 'handed out' is not quite accurate.

They are free but the visitor has to find them. They are usually available on a
large table in the first room proper of the tour, underneath a large chandelier
which has the first lace exhibit attached.

They are dark grey, tall and narrow, with (from memory) no picture on the
outside and therefore not obviously anything to do with the lace. There are
some small pictures inside, but of the house not of the lace!

Be warned that several pieces are not exactly in the same position within a
room as stated, and some need searching for as they blend in with the rest of
the displays.

The house itself is only open from 12 until 4. Entrance is in timed batches and
it is worth pre-booking an entrance time as early as possible. If you can only
get a later time (2.45 or later) make sure you try to follow the lace trail as
much as possible. If you linger in other rooms too much you won't see all the
lace as they are very prompt at closing the house.

Finally the entrance fee is in two parts as many people only visit the gardens.
The first part (£8) is for the grounds and is paid at the car park. There is a
free bus up to the house (allow a minimum of half an hour for this) where you
have to buy a second ticket. This is primarily advertised as a Gift Aid price
of £10, which means that as a charity the National Trust can claim an extra 25%
back from the government but if you are an overseas visitor or don't pay tax in
the UK (or just don't want to Gift Aid?) the standard entry fee is only £9.

It is not logical to me that they charge more when they are also able to claim
an extra £2.50 and some charities charge less for Gift Aid entry fees. I have
been told this is standard National Trust pricing policy, not just at
Waddesdon.

Jacquie from Lincolnshire
but currently in the Highlands of Scotland so it might be a while before I get
a phone signal to be able to send this message.

Dear Susan,

Let me happily report I've been a member of The Lace Guild for many years.
And, I have often encouraged Arachne members to have a look at the
wonderful 64-page issues of Lace. In my opinion, it is the best English
language
lace bulletin available. Please thank your proofreaders for the wonderful
volunteer work they do. (Proofreaders are so often not given the
appreciation they deserve.)

Yes, I saw some of the Lace 21 entries pictured - all in color - in the
April issue. It would be nice to have them in a booklet format, along with
some views of the Waddesdon rooms in which they are exhibited. I have all
issues of Lace going back for years, but once they are filed away they are
rarely consulted again.

On the other hand, my lace library is consulted several times a day. All
the booklets published by The Lace Guild reside in special boxes on a
library shelf. Several have been lent recently to Tess, for her group of
fledgling new lace makers here in Maine. They are reasonably priced, and easy
to
use.

Hello Jeri,
There is a small booklet handed out to visitors, stating which room pieces are
in, and a short description about each piece, inspiration etc. It has no
pictures of the lace.
The Lace Guild and Lace Society have both published pictures of entries,
presumably the Guild of Tatters has done something similar.
Sadly, no catalogue that I know of.
Christine

Thank you, Christine, for letting us know of the activities at Waddesdon
Manor.

If you have already been, did you happen to notice if there is any printed
brochure or exhibit catalog in connection with the exhibit? There are few
pictures on the web site, and for those who cannot attend, it is a bit
disappointing to have nothing lasting of the exhibit!

If there is something and you can advise how to obtain, it would be much
appreciated.
