Yes, I agree with you - and Claire has found the product used
 http://www.cpu-enterprises.com/sirdar/loopa.htm
also instructions at

Somehow I don't think it's really necessary to buy a fancy gadget, a piece of
sturdy card or thick plastic cut to shape would work just as well - unless you
already have a very wide hairpin.

[lace] Loopy scarf - was My lace

2010-01-19 Thread Brenda Paternoster
I'm working on a variety of torchon corners for Lace Guild Convention - and
picking brains as to how a scarf was made.

DD was given a scarf for Christmas, but it's really not her colour so she gave
it to me at the weekend - and I wore it today. It was given to Lucy by a
colleague. Apparently it was quick and easy to do and she just kept going
until she'd made one for each of her workmates.

Yesterday was our little lace group meeting, only four of us plus an unexpected
visitor in the guise of Sue Dane who called in to return a couple of bags which
had been borrowed for Knitting Stitching last year, and none of us are sure
how it was made. It consists of four strands of novelty yarns (ribbon, boucle,
slub and eyelash) somehow formed into loops about the width of three fingers
and held together with a plain yarn which is either stitched or crocheted down
the middle.

Both crochet and knitting have 'loop' stitches which show a similar effect
to your scarf. That would be my guess, one of those - inclined to the
knitting, looking at the shape of the stitches in the centre. Maybe it is a
variation of 'broomstick lace.'

Maybe a variation of hairpin lace? It looks somewhat like a basic strip of
this, just with fancier thread than I have seen before. There are a couple of
websites with fairly good pictures - e.g.
http://www.crochetcabana.com/specialty/hairpin_lace.htm

All of these that I've seen secure the middle with the same thread as the
loops, but perhaps there is a variation that would allow different yarns to be
used?

I used to make hairpin lace but found that counting the loops while
making those long strips and all the joins when crochet or joining the
strips was very tedious. It's a good way to make a little yarn go a
long way but it really stretches. I made a shawl out of skein of
chenille and it stretched so much that if I fold it in half it's about
the right length to wear over my shoulders. ;-)
