[lace] Retirement.

2016-06-07 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
Very best wishes, Brian, for your 'retirement' I, too, have just turned 80
-- obviously 1936 was a Vintage Year! Good pre-war quality!

Your bobbin collection, and all your writings have been wonderful, and I am
sure all Lacemakers will join me in saying Thank You for your efforts to
help keep our craft, and it's wonderful history, alive,

I hope all Lacemakers and their families are safe from the extremes of
weather the planet is having at the moment. Here Down Under there have been
the most terrible storms and floods - a 2000 km storm along the East coast -
yes 2 thousand km long storm! Terrible flash floods etc. We, here in
Melbourne missed them so are safe, but Sydney copped a terrible battering.,
as did Brisbane (Qld), right down to Launceston (in Tasmania)
We saw, on TV news the tornados in USA. Just terrible.

Hi Nolene

This has brought me out of lurkdom, it's definitely for me. I'm hoping to
retire at Easter next year and over the last few weeks I've started planning in
my mind all the things I want to do, especially lace, as I'm not getting time
to do any at the moment due to family circumstances. But I'm just getting
hints from my daughter that I shall be expected to do lots of grandson sitting
when I retire. Oh well, I suppose I'll just have to dream on...

Alison in Colchester, Essex, UK where it's a beautiful, breezy day at the
moment, but we're promised rain later

Retirement.

They all promised me
when retirement was due,
I'd be doing so much with my lace.
I'd have oodles of time
To plan and create,
And have projects all over the place.

But then the day came,
And I planned to sit down
With all of that thread that I'd bought.
With pins and my pillows
And bobbins galore
And great piles of books just to sort.

But where does the time go?
I really can't say
The days seem to disappear fast.
As the days now fly by
I seem to do LESS
Just where did I find time in the past!

Hi Alison,
Do not forget that it is your life too when you retire. It is great to see
and look after your grandson but do make sure you have time for yourself as
well.
I was lucky to have about 3 years of retirement before I started helping
with my granddaughter. I love her very much and enjoy having her but it is
tiring. I always told my daughter I would help but was not always available
to help as I have a life of my own.
So make sure you give yourself time for your crafts as well as having time
for grandson.
Enjoy retirement.

RE: [lace] Retirement

2014-11-11 Thread Gray, Alison J
Thank you for those wise words, Corinne, last year I and my other half went on
a pre-retirement course where we were told that we needed to make time for
ourselves. I thought I had it all sorted out, but life has been turned upside
down in the last few weeks and putting the theory into practice is going to be
more difficult than I thought. Still by the time I retire my grandson will be
nearly 3 so I might be able to teach him to make lace.

Hi Noelene and fellow Arachnids,

This lovelypoem is soo true. In retirement one seems to have less time for
one’s craft than ever. What happens I think is all the other people
thinking;- “We can ask her/him to do so and so as they are retired and have
plenty of time on their hands.” As we are loath to say no, I want some time
to do the things I enjoy we end up working harder than ever :-D.

Power to your lace pillow and may it help us to say NO to things that can be
done by others???

Happy lace making, Joepie in East Sussex, UK.

Re: [lace] Retirement

2014-11-08 Thread lynrbailey
Dear Noelene,
I love your poetry, and have saved this one as well. You put things so very
well.

But, taking the sense of your poem, Retirement seems to do that. I am a
morning person, and so I tend to get up at 5 a.m. Since retired people
generally don't have to be breakfasted, dressed and sensible at 7:30 in the
morning, I go downstairs, the dog and I go get the paper, I make the coffee and
tea, start breakfast if necessary, and then sit down with my coffee and start
to make lace. It's set up at the end of the kitchen table, near the sliding
glass door, with the mug heater on the table for the coffee, and off I go,
until the sun rises, frequently. Simply keeping the lace set up ready to go,
without bobbin holders pinned down and only the cover cloth properly over all,
entices me to sit and make lace.

Might also help to schedule in the lace making as part of your chores, or an
award for some chores finished. I consider sorting lace books a chore, as I am
not making lace.

Lyn in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA, where it's 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning
and I've done 2 hours of lace. Big mug of coffee is finished.
